Integrating Ecological and Engineering Concepts of Resilience in Microbial Communities
Many definitions of resilience have been proffered for natural and engineered ecosystems, but a conceptual consensus on resilience in microbial communities is still lacking. We argue that the disconnect largely results from the wide variance in microbial community complexity, which range from compositionally simple synthetic consortia to complex natural communities, and divergence between the typical practical outcomes emphasized by ecologists and engineers. Viewing microbial communities as elasto-plastic systems that undergo both recoverable and unrecoverable transitions, we argue that this gap between the engineering and ecological definitions of resilience stems from their respective emphases on elastic and plastic deformation, respectively. We propose that the two concepts may be fundamentally united around the resilience of function rather than state in microbial communities and the regularity in the relationship between environmental variation and a community\u27s functional response. Furthermore, we posit that functional resilience is an intrinsic property of microbial communities and suggest that state changes in response to environmental variation may be a key mechanism driving functional resilience in microbial communities
EffectiveSan: Type and Memory Error Detection using Dynamically Typed C/C++
Low-level programming languages with weak/static type systems, such as C and
C++, are vulnerable to errors relating to the misuse of memory at runtime, such
as (sub-)object bounds overflows, (re)use-after-free, and type confusion. Such
errors account for many security and other undefined behavior bugs for programs
written in these languages. In this paper, we introduce the notion of
dynamically typed C/C++, which aims to detect such errors by dynamically
checking the "effective type" of each object before use at runtime. We also
present an implementation of dynamically typed C/C++ in the form of the
Effective Type Sanitizer (EffectiveSan). EffectiveSan enforces type and memory
safety using a combination of low-fat pointers, type meta data and type/bounds
check instrumentation. We evaluate EffectiveSan against the SPEC2006 benchmark
suite and the Firefox web browser, and detect several new type and memory
errors. We also show that EffectiveSan achieves high compatibility and
reasonable overheads for the given error coverage. Finally, we highlight that
EffectiveSan is one of only a few tools that can detect sub-object bounds

Black carbon physical and optical properties across northern India during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons
Black carbon (BC) is known to have major impacts on both climate and human health and is therefore of global importance, particularly in regions close to large populations that have strong sources. The size-resolved mixing state of BC-containing particles was characterised using a single-particle soot photometer (SP2). The study focusses on the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. Data presented are from the UK Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements BAe-146 research aircraft that performed flights during the pre-monsoon (11 and 12 June) and monsoon (30 June to 11 July) seasons of 2016.
Over the IGP, BC mass concentrations were greater (1.95 µg m−3) compared to north-west India (1.50 µg m−3) and north-east India (0.70 µg m−3) during the pre-monsoon season. Across northern India, two distinct BC modes were recorded; a mode of small BC particles (core diameter <0.16 µm and coating thickness <50 nm) and a mode of moderately coated BC (core diameter <0.22 µm and coating thickness of 50–200 nm). The IGP and north-east India locations exhibited moderately coated black carbon particles with enhanced coating thicknesses, core sizes, mass absorption cross sections, and scattering enhancement values compared to much lower values present in the north-west. The coating thickness and mass absorption cross section increased with altitude (13 %) compared to those in the boundary layer. As the monsoon arrived across the region, mass concentration of BC decreased over the central IGP and north-east locations (38 % and 28 % respectively), whereas for the north-west location BC properties remained relatively consistent. Post-monsoon onset, the coating thickness, core size, mass absorption cross section, and scattering enhancement values were all greatest over the central IGP much like the pre-monsoon season but were considerably reduced over both north-east and north-west India. Increases in mass absorption cross section through the atmospheric column were still present during the monsoon for the north-west and central IGP locations, but less so over the north-east due to lack of long-range transport aerosol aloft. Across the Indo-Gangetic Plain and north-east India during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons, solid-fuel (wood burning) emissions form the greatest proportion of BC with moderately coated particles. However, as the monsoon develops in the north-east there was a switch to small uncoated BC particles indicative of traffic emissions, but the solid-fuel emissions remained in the IGP into the monsoon. For both seasons in the north-west, traffic emissions form the greatest proportion of BC particles.
Our findings will prove important for greater understanding of the BC physical and optical properties, with important consequences for the atmospheric radiative forcing of BC-containing particles. The findings will also help constrain the regional aerosol models for a variety of applications such as space-based remote sensing, chemistry transport modelling, air quality, and BC source and emission inventories
Characteristics and Motivational Factors of Effective Extension Advisory Leaders: Implications for Building Strong Extension Advisory Councils
The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics and motivational factors of effective Extension advisory leaders. This Delphi study was conducted with a selected group of County Extension Directors and a group of Extension State Advisory Leaders. The study identified 10 characteristics that distinguish an effective Extension advisory leader. Some of these characteristics are explicit and easy to observe, while others are implicit and difficult to directly observe. Therefore, it is practical to use directly observable characteristics of effective advisory leaders when selecting volunteers. Once potential volunteers are spotted in the community, implicit characteristics of effective advisory leaders should be used to further screen them before they are selected. The study also identified the eight most important factors motivating individuals to volunteer as effective advisory leaders. Understanding these motivational factors is helpful for creating an environment for attracting and retaining effective volunteers. Understanding their motivation for volunteer work and creating an environment for them to meet the motivating factors for volunteering will lead to volunteer satisfaction and retention. The findings of this study can be used to build strong Extension advisory councils
Quantum and Thermal Phase Transitions of Halogen-Bridged Binuclear Transition-Metal Complexes
Aiming to settle the controversial observations for halogen-bridged binuclear
transition-metal (MMX) complexes, finite-temperature Hartree-Fock calculations
are performed for a relevant two-band Peierls-Hubbard model. Thermal, as well
as quantum, phase transitions are investigated with particular emphasis on the
competition between electron itinerancy, electron-phonon interaction and
electron-electron correlation. Recently observed distinct thermal behaviors of
two typical MMX compounds Pt_2(CH_3CS_2)_4I and
(NH_4)_4[Pt_2(P_2O_5H_2)_4I]2H_2O are supported and further tuning of their

Soybean meal is necessary in diets for early-weaned (12 d of age) pigs
A total of 192 pigs (initially 8.0 lb and 12 d of age) was used to determine the optimal soybean meal level to be included in starter diets for the 12-d-old weaned pig. The trial was a 28 d growth assay. Pigs were allotted by weight to six replicates of four treatments with six or 10 pigs per pen. From d 0 to 14 postweaning, pigs were fed a common diet or experimental diets containing 5, 10, and 15% soybean meal. These high nutrient dense diets were formulated to contain 1.7% lysine. All pigs were fed a common transition diet from d 14 to 21 postweaning formulated to contain 1.4% lysine and a common phase II diet from d 21 to 28 postweaning formulated to contain 1.25% lysine. Linear improvements in average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were observed in the d 0 to 14 postweaning period as soybean meal increased from 0 to 15% of the diet. No differences in growth performance were observed when pigs were fed the common transition and phase II diets from d 14 to 21 postweaning and d 21 to 28 postweaning, respectively. Pig weights on d 14, 21, and 28 postweaning improved linearly. Thus, the improvements in ADG and ADFI for the cumulative (d 0 to 28 postweaning) period were a result of the performance in the d 0 to 14 postweaning period. The advantage in pig weight on d 14 postweaning was maintained through d 28 postweaning. In conclusion, soybean meal can replace skim milk and be included at a level between 10 and 15% in the diet of pigs weaned at 12 d of age.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 18,199
