    Congestion-Aware Routing (CAR):Vehicular Traffic Routing Based on Real-Time Road Occupancy Estimates

    This work addresses the problem of routing vehicular traffic on road networks. Fair routing is effected using real-time data acquired from a sensor network superimposed on road networks. Routing information is in the form of which route provides the fastest set of interlinked road segments between any departure-destination pair of nodes. The work adopts Dijkstra’s Shortest Path First (SPF) routing algorithm and derives a suitable routing metric from road occupancy data as a major contribution of this work that makes the SPF algorithm applicable to vehicular traffic routing on road networks. Also, a hypothetical road network and a corresponding Mobile App is used to illustrate our novel vehicular traffic routing algorithm. It is shown in this work that the method is more practical and easier to realize than a method in literature — Spatial and Traffic Aware Vehicular Routing (STAR)

    Technological Innovations and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in the Ashanti Region: An Evaluation of the National Ambulance Service’s Support to Referral Centres

    The practice of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) encompasses the pre-hospital and in-hospital triage, resuscitation, initial assessment and management of undifferentiated urgent and emergency cases until discharge or transfer to the care of another physician or health care professional. This involves the development and deployment of pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency medical systems for rescue processes. Thus, the goal of effective EMS is to provide emergency medical care to all who need it. However, many factors determine the quality of EMS, and that the response time is an important EMS industry benchmark. The study assesses the level of technological innovations as a means of providing quality pre-hospital care to patients in times of emergencies and the acceptance of such practices by Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) – a referral centre. All the 16 National Ambulance Service (NAS) centres in the Ashanti Region in Ghana were considered for the study, with only 93 personnel manning these stations and hence the difficulty for them to attend to concurrent cases of emergencies. Questionnaires were administered on the perceptions and opinions of patients/relatives, doctors and nurses as well as staff of the 16 ambulance service centres about EMS delivery. Systematic random sampling was used to select patients/relatives and ambulance service staff whilst convenience sampling was used to select individuals from the rest of the categories. The use of fixed telephone lines and mobile phones were the primary tools for communication. For quality evidence-based EMS practices, NAS lacked the integration of GIS, GPS and GSM technologies including mobile tablet PCs and software solution to properly discharge their duties.     Technology Media, Service Innovation and the Shaping of Executive Cognition

    The upsurge of information and communication technology innovations around the world has induced the establishment of many technology enterprises, mostly small-medium, that focus on service innovation. Due to the materiality of technology to this enterprise genre, its executive is significantly shaped by technology media, but explanations of technological shaping are low. This paper seeks to address this gap through a study informed by critical realism and media ecology. It argues that executive cognition is shaped because ICT media and service innovation imperatives combine to generate executive internalizations; and it is shaped by service innovation driven internalizations of technology media functions. The paper also discusses theoretical, research and practical implications based on these arguments

    Distributed Automation System Based Remote Monitoring of Power Quality Disturbance on LV Network

    Electrical distribution networks are prone to power quality disturbances originating from the complexity of the distribution network, mode of distribution (overhead or underground) and types of loads used by customers. Data on the types of disturbances present and frequency of occurrence is needed for economic evaluation and hence finding solution to the problem. Utility companies have resorted to using secondary power quality devices such as smart meters to help gather the required data. Even though this approach is easier to adopt, data gathered from these devices may not serve the required purpose, since the installation of these devices in the electrical network usually does not conform to available PQM placement methods. This paper presents a design of a PQM that is capable of integrating into an existing DAS infrastructure to take advantage of available placement methodologies. The monitoring component of the design is implemented and installed to monitor an existing LV network. Data from the monitor is analyzed and presented. A portion of the LV network of the Electricity Company of Ghana is modeled in MATLAB-Simulink and analyzed under various earth fault conditions. The results presented show the ability of the PQM to detect and analyze PQ disturbance such as voltage sag and overvoltage. By adopting a placement methodology and installing these nodes, utilities are assured of accurate and reliable information with respect to the quality of power delivered to consumers

    Incidence of Blood and Meat Spots in Eggs from a Commercial Poultry Farm

    A study was conducted in two phases simultaneously in a commercial poultry farm to ascertain whether egg weight, temperature variation in pens, and proximity of birds to a noise source had an influence on the incidence of blood and meat spots in chicken eggs. Phase one involved the random sampling of 60 eggs per week for 15 weeks, making a total of 900 eggs from the pens of a 50-week-old layer strain. Phase two determined the effect of noise from a 3.3 kW electrical gasoline generator on the incidence of blood and meat spots. It lasted for 14 weeks and involved the random sampling of 10 eggs per week directly from two pens (i.e., A & D). Pen A and D were 4.7 m and 68 m away from the noise source respectively. A Chi-square test was conducted to establish the relationship between the parameters, whilst a Cramer’s V test was used to determine the extent of association where differences were deemed significant (p<0.05). Out of the 1040 eggs collected, 63% of the eggs had spots (32% blood spots and 31% meat spots). No association was observed between the occurrence of spots and egg weight, temperature variation, and proximity of birds to a generator

    Climate Change Awareness and Coping Strategies of Cocoa Farmers in Rural Ghana

    The study assessed the perception of farmers on the awareness, causes and impact of climate change on their farming activities. The study further identifies and describes the various coping strategies adopted by farmers and ways of improving upon them to effectively tackle change in climatic conditions. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, such as frequencies, and percentages. The other key technique that was employed to address the objective includes the Chi square analysis. The findings indicates that, the ( ) calculated (25.846) is greater than critical (18.307); implying that, respondents (cocoa farmers) in all the cocoa growing regions in the country are much aware of climate change and its impact on their farming activities ranging from the time of planting cocoa to the time of harvesting and drying cocoa beans. Main causes of climate change by farmers’ perception include God’s plan signifying the end of time, usage of heavy machines on land, air and water, deforestation, indiscriminate bush burning before farming or in search of game, farming alongside river bodies and illegal mining. Amongst the coping strategies identified include the soil fertility strategy, shade management strategy, land preparation strategy, farm size strategy and lining and pegging strategy.  It evident that the existing agencies and government bodies have not been responsive enough in addressing the climatic problems, forecasting skills and opportunities facing cocoa farmers as crucial factors of risk posed by climate change. The study advocates that government and stakeholders should put up educational programmes tailored to meet the climatic information needs of farmers especially the causes to enable them cope with the emerging challenges to enhance their production.     Forever-Fit Summer Camp: The Impact of a 6-Week Summer Healthy Lifestyle Day Camp on Anthropometric, Cardiovascular, and Physical Fitness Measures in Youth With Obesity

    Pediatric obesity is a public health concern with lifestyle intervention as the first-line treatment. Forever-Fit Summer Camp (FFSC) is a 6-week summer day program offering physical activity, nutrition education, and well-balanced meals to youth at low cost. The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of this program that does not emphasize weight loss rather emphasizes healthy behaviors on body mass index, cardiovascular and physical fitness. Methods: The inclusion criteria were adolescents between 8 and 12 years and body mass index (BMI) ≥85th percentile. The data were collected at baseline and week 6 (wk-6) and was analyzed for 2013-2018 using paired-sample t tests. Results: The participants' (N = 179) average age was 10.6 ± 1.6 years with a majority of females (71%) and black race/ethnicity (70%). At wk-6, BMI and waist circumference decreased by 0.8 ± 0.7 kg/m2 and 1.0 ± 1.3 in, respectively. Resting heart rate, diastolic and systolic blood pressure decreased by 8.5 ± 11.0 bpm, 6.3 ± 8.8 mmHg, and 6.4 ± 10.1 mmHg, respectively. The number of pushups, curl-ups, and chair squats were higher by 5.8 ± 7.5, 6.7 ± 9.1, and 7.7 ± 8.5, respectively. Conclusion: The FFSC is efficacious for improving BMI, cardiovascular, and physical fitness in the short term. The effect of similar episodic efforts that implement healthy lifestyle modifications throughout the school year should be investigated

    Yam Tuber Dormancy and Sprouting: The Role of Concentration Dynamics of Endogenous Gibberellic Acid

    The role of endogenous gibberellic acid (GA ) in the regulation of yam (Dioscorea spp.) tuber 3 dormancy was investigated by determining the changes in the endogenous GA levels during 3 natural dormancy progression. Two Dioscorea rotundata cultivars ('Pona' and 'Labreko') and one Dioscorea alata cultivar ('CRI-Ahoɔdenfoɔ') used in these studies have varying dormancy duration. Endogenous GA levels determined for the yam tubers ranged from 1.53 – 3.05 mg/g dw 3 and 1.23 – 1.58 mg/g dw for 'Pona'; 1.53 – 3.40 mg/g dw and 1.25–1.57 mg/g dw for 'Labreko'; 1.48 – 3.62 mg/g dw and 1.28 – 1.60 mg/g dw for 'CRI-Ahoɔdenfoɔ', respectively, for the outer and inner portions. 'Pona' and 'Labreko' had dormancy break at 60 days after harvest (DAH), but at 90 DAH for 'CRI-Ahoɔdenfoɔ'. Generally, GA levels increased from harvest to the maximum 3 at 30 DAH, then declined to the minimum at 60 DAH before finally increasing again at 90 DAH for the outer portions of the yam tuber. For the inner portions of the tuber, GA levels rather 3 declined significantly to the minimum at 30 DAH, increased at 60 DAH and then decreased again at 90 DAH. GA levels in the outer portions of the tubers increased by 84-122%, 65-77% and 61- 3 65%, respectively, in 'CRI-Ahoɔdenfoɔ', 'Labreko' and 'Pona', but decreased in the inner portions by 19-23%, 24-26% and 26-28%. Essentially, higher amounts of endogenous gibberellins in yam tubers induced longer dormancy duration whereas lower amounts were indicative of dormancy termination and subsequent initiation of sprouting.&nbsp

    ANTISYNTHETASE SYNDROME: COURSE OF A RARE DISEASE ON EXAMPLE OF CLINICAL CASE

    Systemic disorders of connective tissue refer to rare and poorly studied diseases. This group of diseases associated with the variable course and makes it interesting for either medical scientists and researchers or practitioner. Herein we report a case of antisynthetase syndrome with interstitial lung disease complicated by pulmonary thromboembolism. The patient is 71 year old female, who suffered from severe dyspnea, dry cough, intermittent wheezing. Also she had dry eyes, dry mouth, muscle weakness and intermittent pain in large joints, and low grade fever. Physical examination revealed a characteristic heliotrope eye rash, V sign, «mechanic’s hand», peripheral muscles atrophy, dry eyes and mouth, fine crackles to auscultation in basal parts of lungs, soft S1 and S2 heart sounds. Her biochemical profile showed increased creatinekinase, LDH, AsAT, and AlAT Her immunology results were positive to ANA, anti-ds-DNA, anti-ss-A, anti-ss-B and anti- Jo-1 autoantibodies. Based on the obtained data, antisynthetase syndrome was established. It was detected, that progressive dyspnea had been caused by interstitial lung disease and pulmonary thromboembolism. It was confirmed by chest CT-scan and pulmonary angiography. Treatment in this case is mainly symptomatic. It was prescribed glucocorticoids, immunosuppressant, and anticoagulants. This case illustrates the course of the antisynthetase overlap syndrome and difficulties of it management due to the lack of treatment standards and reliable data of the medicine effectiveness
