Physiology and prevention of heel ulcers: The state of science

    Get PDF
The prevalence of heel ulcers across settings is high and is increasing. Prevention of ulcers requires knowledge of their etiology and the scientific basis for preventive care. The interaction between external pressure and the heel vasculature is central to the prevention of heel ulcers. This article focuses on the prevention of heel pressure ulcers. The physiology of heel tissue perfusion, the effect of external pressure on heel perfusion, as well as what is known about strategies to reduce external pressure and approaches to improve heel skin blood flow will be discussed. It is only through understanding of the physiology of heel tissue perfusion and its relation to external pressure that effective preventive measures to reduce heel skin breakdown can be adapted in clinical practice

Rate 3/4 coded 16-QAM for uplink applications

First phase development of an advanced modulation technology which synergistically combines coding and modulation to achieve 2 bits per second per Hertz bandwidth efficiency in satellite demodulators is nearing completion. A proof-of-concept model is being developed to demonstrate technology feasibility, establish practical bandwidth efficiency limitations, and provide a data base for the design and development of engineering model satellite demodulators. The basic considerations leading to the choice of 4 x 4 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and its associated coding format are discussed, along with the basic implementation of the carrier and clock recovery, automatic gain control, and decoding process. Preliminary performance results are presented. Spectra for the modulated signal shows the effects of the square root Nyquist filters in the modulation. Bit error rate (BER) results for the encoder/decoder subsystem show near ideal results, although power consumption is high and baseband BER performance of the Nyquist filter set is poor. Recommendations regarding the present system to improve BER performance and acquisition speed are given

A Probabilistic Linear Genetic Programming with Stochastic Context-Free Grammar for solving Symbolic Regression problems

Traditional Linear Genetic Programming (LGP) algorithms are based only on the selection mechanism to guide the search. Genetic operators combine or mutate random portions of the individuals, without knowing if the result will lead to a fitter individual. Probabilistic Model Building Genetic Programming (PMB-GP) methods were proposed to overcome this issue through a probability model that captures the structure of the fit individuals and use it to sample new individuals. This work proposes the use of LGP with a Stochastic Context-Free Grammar (SCFG), that has a probability distribution that is updated according to selected individuals. We proposed a method for adapting the grammar into the linear representation of LGP. Tests performed with the proposed probabilistic method, and with two hybrid approaches, on several symbolic regression benchmark problems show that the results are statistically better than the obtained by the traditional LGP.Comment: Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO) 2017, Berlin, German

    Penicillium marneffei Infection in AIDS

    Get PDF
Penicillium marneffei is a dimorphic fungus which is endemic in Southeast Asia. It is an opportunistic pathogen which has emerged to become an AIDS-defining illness in the endemic areas. Early diagnosis with prompt initiation of treatment is crucial for its management. Prompt diagnosis can often be established through careful cytological and histological examination of clinical specimens although microbiological culture remains the gold standard for its diagnosis. Standard antifungal treatment for AIDS patients with penicilliosis is well established. Highly active antiretroviral therapy should be started early together with the antifungal treatment. Special attention should be paid to potential drug interaction between antiretroviral and antifungal treatments. Secondary prophylaxis may be discontinued with a low risk of relapse of the infection once the immune dysfunction has improved

A novel linear algebra method for the determination of periodic steady states of nonlinear oscillators

    Get PDF
Periodic steady-state (PSS) analysis of nonlinear oscillators has always been a challenging task in circuit simulation. We present a new way that uses numerical linear algebra to identify the PSS(s) of nonlinear circuits. The method works for both autonomous and excited systems. Using the harmonic balancing method, the solution of a nonlinear circuit can be represented by a system of multivariate polynomials. Then, a Macaulay matrix based root-finder is used to compute the Fourier series coefficients. The method avoids the difficult initial guess problem of existing numerical approaches. Numerical examples show the accuracy and feasibility over existing methods. Ā© 2014 IEEE.postprin

An adaptive dynamical low-rank tensor approximation scheme for fast circuit simulation

    Get PDF
Tensors, as higher order generalization of matrices, have received growing attention due to their readiness in representing multidimensional data intrinsic to numerous engineering problems. This paper develops an efficient and accurate dynamical update algorithm for the low-rank mode factors. By means of tangent space projection onto the low-rank tensor manifold, the repeated computation of a full tensor Tucker decomposition is replaced with a much simpler solution of nonlinear differential equations governing the tensor mode factors. A worked-out numerical example demonstrates the excellent efficiency and scalability of the proposed dynamical approximation scheme.postprin
