Cluster spacecraft observations of a ULF wave enhanced by Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR)
Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) is a high-latitude ionospheric heating facility capable of exciting ULF waves on local magnetic field lines. We examine an interval from 1 February 2006 when SPEAR was transmitting a 1 Hz modulation signal with a 10 min on-off cycle. Ground magnetometer data indicated that SPEAR modulated currents in the local ionosphere at 1 Hz, and enhanced a natural field line resonance with a 10 min period. During this interval the Cluster spacecraft passed over the heater site. Signatures of the SPEAR-enhanced field line resonance were present in the magnetic field data measured by the magnetometer on-board Cluster-2. These are the first joint ground- and space-based detections of field line tagging by SPEAR
Spins in the Vortices of a High Temperature Superconductor
Neutron scattering is used to characterise the magnetism of the vortices for
the optimally doped high-temperature superconductor La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)
(x=0.163) in an applied magnetic field. As temperature is reduced, low
frequency spin fluctuations first disappear with the loss of vortex mobility,
but then reappear. We find that the vortex state can be regarded as an
inhomogeneous mixture of a superconducting spin fluid and a material containing
a nearly ordered antiferromagnet. These experiments show that as for many other
properties of cuprate superconductors, the important underlying microscopic
forces are magnetic
Non-surgical external jugular vein catheterization using an ear vein access in piglets
The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of external jugular vein catheterization through an ear vein in piglets. Forty-six sevoflurane-midazolam anaesthetized piglets were included. External jugular vein catheterization was conducted through the ear vein using the Seldinger technique. Part 1 (nâ=â27): optimal puncture site was based on the deltoid tuberosity as a landmark to reach the external jugular vein. The final position of the catheter was verified in 25 piglets using computer tomography. Catheterization time was recorded and patency of the catheter assessed by repeated blood sampling for up to 4âh. Part 2 (nâ=â19): ear vein catheterization was without taking into account any landmarks. Functionality for blood sampling was evaluated as described in part 1. Catheter advancement was possible in 25/27 and 18/19 piglets in parts 1 and 2, respectively. Median (range) time required for successful catheterization was 1.95 (1â10)âmin (nâ=â38). The deltoid tuberosity was a good landmark to reach the external jugular vein. But blood sampling was also possible through catheters ending slightly cranial to the external jugular vein. Despite successful catheter advancement, blood sampling was not possible from one catheter in each part of the study (total: two piglets). One of these catheters presented luminal damage, while the other one presented as normal after being removed from the animal. Summarizing, central vein catheterization through the ear vein was feasible in 93.5% and repeated blood sampling was possible in 89.1% of the piglets (nâ=â46)
Brorfelde Schmidt CCD Catalog (BSCC)
The Brorfelde Schmidt CCD Catalog (BSCC) contains about 13.7 million stars,
north of +49 deg Declination with precise positions and V, R photometry. The
catalog has been constructed from the reductions of 18,667 CCD frames observed
with the Brorfelde Schmidt Telescope between 2000 and 2007. The Tycho-2 catalog
was used for astrometric and photometric reference stars. Errors of individual
positions are about 20 to 200 mas for stars in the R = 10 to 18 mag range.
External comparisons with 2MASS and SDSS reveal possible small systematic
errors in the BSCC of up to about 30 mas. The catalog is supplemented with J,
H, and K_s magnitudes from the 2MASS catalog. The catalog data file (about 550
MB ASCII, compressed) will be made available at the Strasbourg Data Center

Spitzer-MIPS Observations of the eta Cha Young Association
We have mapped the eta Chamaeleontis young stellar association in the
far-infrared with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on the
Spitzer Space Telescope. All sixteen members within the map region were
detected at 24 um, along with five members at 70 um and two at 160 um. Ten
stars show far-infrared excess emission indicating the presence of
circumstellar disks; six of these have central clearings as evidenced by the
onset of excess emission at >5 um. No new infrared excess sources are
identified among the 113 2MASS field stars with 24 um photometry but not seen
as X-ray sources, indicating that membership lists derived from X-ray surveys
are reasonably complete. Circumstellar disks in the eta Cha association span
the range from 1e-1 to 1e-4 in their fractional infrared luminosity, with a
median Ldust /Lstar of 0.04. The presence of optically thick, optically thin,
and intermediate optical depth disks within the same stellar group, in
combination with the large fraction of disks with inner holes, indicates that
the Cha association represents a crucial stage in circumstellar disk evolution.Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journa

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial examining multilevel prediction of response to behavioral activation and exposure-based therapy for generalized anxiety disorder.
BACKGROUND:Only 40-60% of patients with generalized anxiety disorder experience long-lasting improvement with gold standard psychosocial interventions. Identifying neurobehavioral factors that predict treatment success might provide specific targets for more individualized interventions, fostering more optimal outcomes and bringing us closer to the goal of "personalized medicine." Research suggests that reward and threat processing (approach/avoidance behavior) and cognitive control may be important for understanding anxiety and comorbid depressive disorders and may have relevance to treatment outcomes. This study was designed to determine whether approach-avoidance behaviors and associated neural responses moderate treatment response to exposure-based versus behavioral activation therapy for generalized anxiety disorder. METHODS/DESIGN:We are conducting a randomized controlled trial involving two 10-week group-based interventions: exposure-based therapy or behavioral activation therapy. These interventions focus on specific and unique aspects of threat and reward processing, respectively. Prior to and after treatment, participants are interviewed and undergo behavioral, biomarker, and neuroimaging assessments, with a focus on approach and avoidance processing and decision-making. Primary analyses will use mixed models to examine whether hypothesized approach, avoidance, and conflict arbitration behaviors and associated neural responses at baseline moderate symptom change with treatment, as assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 item scale. Exploratory analyses will examine additional potential treatment moderators and use data reduction and machine learning methods. DISCUSSION:This protocol provides a framework for how studies may be designed to move the field toward neuroscience-informed and personalized psychosocial treatments. The results of this trial will have implications for approach-avoidance processing in generalized anxiety disorder, relationships between levels of analysis (i.e., behavioral, neural), and predictors of behavioral therapy outcome. Self-reported quality care for knee osteoarthritis: comparisons across Denmark, Norway, Portugal and the UK
Objectives: To assess and compare patient perceived quality of osteoarthritis (OA) management in primary healthcare in Denmark, Norway, Portugal and the UK. Methods: Participants consulting with clinical signs and symptoms of knee OA were identified in 30 general practices and invited to complete a cross-sectional survey including quality indicators (QI) for OA care. A QI was considered as eligible if the participant had checked 'Yes' or 'No', and as achieved if the participant had checked 'Yes' to the indicator. The median percentage (with IQR and range) of eligible QIs achieved by country was determined and compared in negative binominal regression analysis. Achievement of individual QIs by country was determined and compared using logistic regression analyses. Results: A total of 354 participants self-reported QI achievement. The median percentage of eligible QIs achieved (checked 'Yes') was 48% (IQR 28%, 64%; range 0-100%) for the total sample with relatively similar medians across three of four countries. Achievement rates on individual QIs showed a large variation ranging from 11% (referral to services for losing weight) to 67% (information about the importance of exercise) with significant differences in achievement rates between the countries. Conclusions: The results indicated a potential for improvement in OA care in all four countries, but for somewhat different aspects of OA care. By exploring these differences and comparing healthcare services, ideas may be generated on how the quality might be improved across nations.
