Galactic Plane H Surveys: IPHAS & VPHAS+
The optical Galactic Plane H surveys IPHAS and VPHAS+ are
dramatically improving our understanding of Galactic stellar populations and
stellar evolution by providing large samples of stars in short lived, but
important, evolutionary phases, and high quality homogeneous photometry and
images over the entire Galactic Plane. Here I summarise some of the
contributions these surveys have already made to our understanding of a number

Factors affecting velvet antler weights in free-ranging reindeer in Alaska
Free-ranging reindeer on the Seward Peninsula in western Alaska are rounded up from late May to early July and antlers are removed. We used data collected from 1987 to 1997 to determine how velvet antler weights of males and females varied with age, year, reproductive status, Julian date, and body weight. Male antler weights increased with age up to age five years, and were lower in castrates than in bulls. There was a significant positive relationship between body weight and antler weight in both sexes. Female antler weights increased with age until at least age nine. Lactating females had lower antler weights than non-lactating females, but this effect is better explained by differences in body weight. Antler weight of individual reindeer at age two years was better predicted by their antler weights as yearlings than their body weight as yearlings
Lactation in yearling Alaskan reindeer: Implications for growth, reproduction, and survival
Unlike most Rangifer herds, free-ranging female reindeer {Rangifer tarandus) on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska frequently give birth as yearlings (12 months). In other reindeer herds this early reproduction has led to negative effects such as decreased future weight gain and reproduction. We analyzed reindeer data collected on the Seward Peninsula between 1987 and 1997 to determine what effect lactating as yearlings had on future weight gain, reproductive rates, and survival. Reindeer were rounded up during June and early July. Individual ear tag numbers were recorded, females were visually inspected for the presence of a distended udder, and some animals were weighed. Females with distended udders as yearlings had subsequent recapture rates, survival rates, weight gain, and future reproductive success comparable to females that did not have distended udders as yearlings. These findings suggest that the beneficial effects of increased calf weight gain outweigh potential negative effects of early reproduction in these reindeer. This may be due to high quality range leading to heavy calves and the ability of females to maintain body reserves during lactation
Disentangling the exchange coupling of entangled donors in the Si quantum computer architecture
We develop a theory for micro-Raman scattering by single and coupled
two-donor states in silicon. We find the Raman spectra to have significant
dependence on the donor exchange splitting and the relative spatial positions
of the two donor sites. In particular, we establish a strong correlation
between the temperature dependence of the Raman peak intensity and the
interdonor exchange coupling. Micro-Raman scattering can therefore potentially
become a powerful tool to measure interqubit coupling in the development of a
Si quantum computer architecture.Comment: Title changed. Other minor change
Coexistence and competition of magnetism and superconductivity on the nanometer scale in underdoped BaFe1.89Co0.11As2
We report muon spin rotation (muSR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy
experiments on underdoped BaFe1.89Co0.11As2 which show that bulk magnetism and
superconductivity (SC) coexist and compete on the nanometer length scale. Our
combined data reveal a bulk magnetic order, likely due to an incommensurate
spin density wave (SDW), which develops below Tmag \approx 32 K and becomes
reduced in magnitude (but not in volume) below Tc = 21.7 K. A slowly
fluctuating precursor of the SDW seems to develop alrady below the structural
transition at Ts \approx 50 K. The bulk nature of SC is established by the muSR
data which show a bulk SC vortex lattice and the IR data which reveal that the
majority of low-energy states is gapped and participates in the condensate at T
<< Tc
Mid-infrared Hall effect in thin-film metals: Probing the Fermi surface anisotropy in Au and Cu
A sensitive mid-infrared (MIR, 900-1100 cm-1, 112-136 meV) photo-elastic
polarization modulation technique is used to measure simultaneously Faraday
rotation and circular dichroism in thin metal films. These two quantities
determine the complex AC Hall conductivity. This novel technique is applied to
study Au and Cu thin films at temperatures down to 20 K and magnetic fields up
to 8 T. The Hall frequency is consistent with band theory predictions. We
report the first measurement of the MIR Hall scattering rate, which is
significantly lower than that derived from Drude analysis of zero magnetic
field MIR transmission measurements. This difference is qualitatively explained
in terms of the anisotropy of the Fermi surface in Au and Cu.Comment: 14 pages of text, 5 figure
Heart Rate Variability Measured Early in Patients with Evolving Acute Coronary Syndrome and 1-year Outcomes of Rehospitalization and Mortality
Objective: This study sought to examine the prognostic value of heart rate variability (HRV) measurement initiated immediately after emergency department presentation for patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
Background: Altered HRV has been associated with adverse outcomes in heart disease, but the value of HRV measured during the earliest phases of ACS related to risk of 1-year rehospitalization and death has not been established.
Methods: Twenty-four-hour Holter recordings of 279 patients with ACS were initiated within 45 minutes of emergency department arrival; recordings with �18 hours of sinus rhythm were selected for HRV analysis (number [N] �193). Time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear HRV were examined. Survival analysis was performed.
Results: During the 1-year follow-up, 94 patients were event-free, 82 were readmitted, and 17 died. HRV was altered in relation to outcomes. Predictors of rehospitalization included increased normalized high frequency power, decreased normalized low frequency power, and decreased low/high frequency ratio. Normalized high frequency �42 ms2 predicted rehospitalization while controlling for clinical variables (hazard ratio [HR] �2.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] �1.4–3.8, P�0.001). Variables significantly associated with death included natural logs of total power and ultra low frequency power. A model with ultra low frequency power �8 ms2 ( HR �3.8; 95% CI �1.5–10.1; P�0.007) and troponin �0.3 ng/mL (HR �4.0; 95% CI �1.3–12.1; P�0.016) revealed that each contributed independently in predicting mortality. Nonlinear HRV variables were significant predictors of both outcomes.
Conclusion: HRV measured close to the ACS onset may assist in risk stratification. HRV cut-points may provide additional, incremental prognostic information to established assessment guidelines, and may be worthy of additional study
Square vortex lattice at anomalously low magnetic fields in electron-doped NdCeCuO
We report here on the first direct observations of the vortex lattice in the
bulk of electron-doped NdCeCuO single crystals. Using
small angle neutron scattering, we have observed a square vortex lattice with
the nearest-neighbors oriented at 45 from the Cu-O bond direction,
which is consistent with theories based on the d-wave superconducting gap.
However, the square symmetry persists down to unusually low magnetic fields.
Moreover, the diffracted intensity from the vortex lattice is found to decrease

IPHAS and the symbiotic stars. I. Selection method and first discoveries
The study of symbiotic stars is essential to understand important aspects of
stellar evolution in interacting binaries. Their observed population in the
Galaxy is however poorly known, and is one to three orders of magnitudes
smaller than the predicted population size. IPHAS, the INT Photometric Halpha
survey of the Northern Galactic plane, gives us the opportunity to make a
systematic, complete search for symbiotic stars in a magnitude-limited volume,
and discover a significant number of new systems.
A method of selecting candidate symbiotic stars by combining IPHAS and
near-IR (2MASS) colours is presented. It allows us to distinguish symbiotic
binaries from normal stars and most of the other types of Halpha emission line
stars in the Galaxy. The only exception are T Tauri stars, which can however be
recognized because of their concentration in star forming regions. Using these
selection criteria, we discuss the classification of a list of 4338 IPHAS stars
with Halpha in emission. 1500 to 2000 of them are likely to be Be stars. Among
the remaining objects, 1183 fulfill our photometric constraints to be
considered candidate symbiotic stars. The spectroscopic confirmation of three
of these objects, which are the first new symbiotic stars discovered by IPHAS,

Likelihood-ratio ranking of gravitational-wave candidates in a non-Gaussian background
We describe a general approach to detection of transient gravitational-wave
signals in the presence of non-Gaussian background noise. We prove that under
quite general conditions, the ratio of the likelihood of observed data to
contain a signal to the likelihood of it being a noise fluctuation provides
optimal ranking for the candidate events found in an experiment. The
likelihood-ratio ranking allows us to combine different kinds of data into a
single analysis. We apply the general framework to the problem of unifying the
results of independent experiments and the problem of accounting for
non-Gaussian artifacts in the searches for gravitational waves from compact
binary coalescence in LIGO data. We show analytically and confirm through
simulations that in both cases the likelihood ratio statistic results in an
