    The Making of Cloud Applications An Empirical Study on Software Development for the Cloud

    Cloud computing is gaining more and more traction as a deployment and provisioning model for software. While a large body of research already covers how to optimally operate a cloud system, we still lack insights into how professional software engineers actually use clouds, and how the cloud impacts development practices. This paper reports on the first systematic study on how software developers build applications in the cloud. We conducted a mixed-method study, consisting of qualitative interviews of 25 professional developers and a quantitative survey with 294 responses. Our results show that adopting the cloud has a profound impact throughout the software development process, as well as on how developers utilize tools and data in their daily work. Among other things, we found that (1) developers need better means to anticipate runtime problems and rigorously define metrics for improved fault localization and (2) the cloud offers an abundance of operational data, however, developers still often rely on their experience and intuition rather than utilizing metrics. From our findings, we extracted a set of guidelines for cloud development and identified challenges for researchers and tool vendors

    Isolation of a 60 kDa protein with in vitro anticancer activity against human cancer cell lines from the purple fluid of the Persian Gulf sea hare, Aplysia dactylomela

    Sea hares have greatly attracted the interest of all those investigating chemical defense substances. Most of these substances are low molecular weight compounds derived from algal diets. In vitroanticancer effect of a 60 kDa protein isolated from the purple fluid of Aplysia dactylomela on four human cancer cell lines was investigated in this study. A 60 kDa protein was purified from secreted purple fluid of A. dactylomela, a sea hare from Persian Gulf. The protein purification procedure consisted basically of ammonium sulfate precipitation, ion exchange chromatography using DEAEā€“ Sepharose and ultra-filtration method. In vitro antiproliferative and cytotoxic activity of the protein ofinterest were evaluated on L929, K562, HL60 and NB4 human cancer cell lines. The antiproliferative and cytotxic effects of 60 kDa protein on human cancer cell lines were measured by MTT assay. Resultsshowed that the 60 kDa protein of the purple fluid of A. dactylomela exhibited the antiproliferative effect on human cancer cell lines, especially on NB4 cell line. It was maximally active at 0.5 ā€“ 1.5 Ƭg/ml on NB4 cell line. Interestingly, the protein did not show significant cytotoxic effects

    Sealive: the use of technical vessel-sealing devices for recipient hepatectomy in liver transplantation: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background: The surgical technique used in liver transplantation has undergone constant evolution in an effort to develop a safe, highly standardized procedure. Despite this, the initial step of recipient hepatectomy has not been the focus of clinical research thus far. Due to advanced coagulopathy in liver transplant recipients, this part of the operation still carries the risk of severe hemorrhage. This trial is designed to compare an electrothermal bipolar vessel sealing device (LigaSureā„¢) and an ultrasound dissector (HARMONIC ACEĀ®+7) with standard surgical techniques during the recipientsā€™ hepatectomy in liver transplantation. Methods/design: In a single-center, prospective, randomized, controlled, parallel, three-armed, confirmatory, open trial, LigaSureā„¢ and HARMONIC ACEĀ®+7 will be compared with standard surgical techniques that use titanium clips and conventional knot-tying ligations during recipient hepatectomy in liver transplantation. Intraoperative total blood loss is the primary endpoint of the trial. Secondary endpoints include blood loss during hepatectomy, the duration of both the hepatectomy and the entire surgical procedure, and blood transfusion requirements of the procedure. To generate reliable data, intraoperative blood loss will be recorded with respect to all rinse fluids during surgery, ascites, and by weighing used swabs. At 80% power and an alpha of 0.025 for both of the experimental groups, 23 subjects will be analyzed per protocol in each study arm in order to detect clinically relevant reduction of intraoperative blood loss. The intention-to-treat analysis will include 69 patients. The follow-up period for each patient will be 90Ā days for safety reasons, whereas all clinical outcomes will be measured within the first 10 postoperative days. Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first prospective, randomized trial comparing two innovative technical methods of vessel sealing and dissection with standard techniques for recipient hepatectomy. This will be done to detect relevant reduction of intraoperative blood loss during liver transplant. The results of the trial are expected to improve patient outcome and safety after liver transplant and to increase the general safety of this procedure.     Mixed Convection Heat Transfer of Al2O3 Nanofluid on the Elliptical Shapes: Numerical Study of Irreversibility

    In this study the 2D laminar and steady water-based Al2O3 nanofluid flow over a cylinder with circular, horizontal and vertical elliptical cross section by constant surface temperature boundary condition has been studied. The main goal of this research is to investigate the effects of different natural and mixed convection heat transfer mechanisms on the convective heat transfer coefficient, and the entropy generation due to the thermal and frictional origination. Conservation equations of the mass, momentum and energy under the assumption of incompressible, Newtonian nanofluid, by using the homogeneous single phase method have been solved. The impact of considered parameters in this study (alteration in cross section, convective flow direction and volume fraction of nano particles) in enhancing the heat transfer rate is studied in association with the entropy generated value in each case. Based on the results, the vertical elliptical cross section, in comparison with others, shows the highest entropy generation value and the heat transfer coefficient in all considered mechanisms. Moreover, mixed convection heat transfer type 2, in which the force flow is perpendicular to the buoyant flow direction, has the highest entropy generation and heat transfer rate for all cross sections. In addition, in all cases in the presence of the nanoparticles, the heat transfer rate and entropy generation increases

    Proton-deuteron radiative capture cross sections at intermediate energies

    Differential cross sections of the reaction p(d,3He)Ī³p(d,^3{\rm He})\gamma have been measured at deuteron laboratory energies of 110, 133 and 180 MeV. The data were obtained with a coincidence setup measuring both the outgoing 3^3He and the photon. The data are compared with modern calculations including all possible meson-exchange currents and two- and three- nucleon forces in the potential. The data clearly show a preference for one of the models, although the shape of the angular distribution cannot be reproduced by any of the presented models.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ

    Hippocampal asymmetry: differences in the left and right hippocampus proteome in the rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy

    Ā© 2016 Elsevier B.V.The hippocampus is a complex brain structure and undergoes severe sclerosis and gliosis in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) as the most common type of epilepsy. The key features of the TLE may be reported in chronic animal models of epilepsy, such as pilocarpine model. Therefore, the current study was conducted in a rat pilocarpine model of acquired epilepsy. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis based proteomic technique was used to compare the proteome map of the left and right hippocampus in both control and epileptic rats. Generally, 95 differentially expressed spots out of 1300 spots were identified in the hippocampus proteome using MALDI-TOF-TOF/MS. Within identified proteins, some showed asymmetric expression related to the mechanisms underlying TLE imposed by pilocarpine. Assessment of lateralization at the molecular level demonstrated that expression of proteins involved in dopamine synthesis was significantly more in the right hippocampus than the left one. In the epileptic model, reduction in dopamine pathway proteins was accompanied by an increase in the expression of proteins involved in polyamine synthesis, referring to a new regulating mechanism. Our results revealed changes in the laterality of protein expression due to pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus that could present some new proteins as potential candidates for antiepileptic drug design. Biological significance In the current study, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) based proteomic technique was used to profile changes in the left and right hippocampus proteome after pilocarpine induced status epilepticus. Spots of proteome maps for two hemispheres were excised and identified with MALDI-TOF-TOF/MS. Analysis of proteome map of the left and right hippocampus revealed a lateralization at the molecular level, in which the expression of proteins involved in dopamine synthesis and release were significantly more in right hippocampi than the left ones in the normal rats. Also, the expression of proteins involved in polyamine synthesis significantly increased in epileptic hippocampus (considerably higher in right hippocampi), whilst the proteins which included in dopamine pathways were decreased. Our results revealed changes in the laterality of protein expression due to pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus that could present some new proteins as potential candidates for antiepileptic drug design

    Removal and Dispersal of Biofluid Films by Powered Medical Devices: Modelling Infectious Agent Spreading in Dentistry

    Summary Medical procedures can disperse infectious agents and spread disease. Particularly, dental procedures may pose a high risk of disease transmission as they use high-powered instruments operating within the oral cavity that may contain infectious microbiota or viruses. Here we assess the ability of powered dental devices in removing the biofluid films and identified mechanical, hydrodynamic, and aerodynamic forces as the main underlying mechanisms of removal and dispersal processes. Our results indicate that potentially infectious agents can be removed and dispersed immediately after dental instrument engagement with the adherent biofluid film while the degree of their dispersal is rapidly depleted due to removal of the source and dilution by the coolant water. We found that droplets, created by high-speed drill interactions typically travel ballistically while aerosol-laden air tends to flow as a current over surfaces. Our mechanistic investigation offers plausible routes for reducing the spread of infection during invasive medical procedures

    Diagnostic value of a ghrelin test for the diagnosis of GH deficiency after subarachnoid hemorrhage

    Objective: To determine the diagnostic value of a ghrelin test in the diagnosis of GH deficiency (GHD) shortly after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Design: Prospective single-center observational cohort study. Methods: A ghrelin test was assessed after the acute phase of SAH and a GH-releasing hormone (GHRH)-arginine test 6 months post SAH. Primary outcome was the diagnostic value of a ghrelin test compared with the GHRH-arginine test in the diagnosis of GHD. The secondary outcome was to assess the safety of the ghrelin test, including patients' comfort, adverse events, and idiosyncratic reactions. Results: Forty-three survivors of SAH were included (15 males, 35%, mean age 56.6G11.7). Six out of 43 (14%) SAH survivors were diagnosed with GHD by GHRH-arginine test. In GHD subjects, median GH peak during ghrelin test was significantly lower than that of non-GHD subjects (5.4 vs 16.6, PZ0.002). Receiver operating characteristics analysis showed an area under the curve of 0.869. A cutoff limit of a GH peak of 15 mg/l corresponded with a sensitivity of 100% and a false-positive rate of 40%. No adverse events or idiosyncratic reactions were observed in subjects undergoing a ghrelin test, except for one subject who reported flushing shortly after ghrelin infusion. Conclusion: Owing to its convenience, validity, and safety, the ghrelin test might be a valuable GH provocative test, especially in the early phase of SAH
