Mother Ireland: Women, the State and the Abortion Referendum in the Republic of Ireland

In this paper, I examine the relationship between women and the Irish state, particularly how the nationalist state has defined and controlled women through their reproductive capabilities. I outline the factors that have contributed to the construction of women\u27s identity and how women have resisted the limitations of this construction in a variety of ways. The issue of abortion is an excellent point on which to base the discussion of women in Ireland because of it extraordinary impact on Irish society. To outline the methodology of this examination, this thesis is theoretically grounded in feminist anthropology, in which the category \u27woman\u27 is defined as culturally constructed rather than biologically based. I focus on general theories concerning women in states with an emphasis on the state control of women\u27s reproductive capabilities. The argument functions from the understanding that women are social actors and express various types of power within society, particularly that areas of women\u27s resistance to state control of their reproduction are dynamic expressions of women\u27s voices. I apply these theories to the women in Ireland as an anthropological case study and in the process examine the usefulness of relying on general theories in illuminating specific cases of anthropological research

Inequalities concerning polar derivative of polynomials

In this paper we obtain certain results for the polar derivative of a polynomial p(z)=cnzn+∑j=μncn−jzn−jp(z) = c_nz^n +\sum_{j=\mu}^n c_{n-j}z^{n-j}, 1≤μ≤n1\leq\mu\leq n, having all its zeros on ∣z∣=k|z| = k, k≤1k\leq 1, which generalizes the results due to Dewan and Mir, Dewan and Hans. We also obtain certain new inequalities concerning the maximum modulus of a polynomial with restricted zeros. [Editor's note: There are flaws in the paper, see M. A. Qazi, Remarks on some recent results about polynomials with restricted zeros, Ann. Univ. Mariae Curie-Skłodowska Sect. A 67 (2), (2013), 59-64

The effects of learners' personality traits on m-learning

Mobile learning (m-learning) is becoming increasingly significant for educators and businesses. Prior research often examines the effectiveness of m-learning; however, it overlooks that learners with different characteristics may respond to m-learning differently. This research examines how learners with different personalities react to m-learning messages. Specifically, it uses the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which is one of the most widely-used personality instruments, and uses four dichotomies, namely introversion–extroversion, sensing–intuition, thinking–feeling and judgment–perception, to describe learner personalities. We conducted a 10-week study with 217 students. We used MBTI to categorize these 217 participating learners into sixteen personality groups, and sent short text messages to their mobile devices. These messages stimulated them to access lecture materials and to participate in online class discussions. We observed how learners with different personalities responded to text messages, and confirmed that learners of different personalities showed different levels of responses to m-learning messages

Integral mean estimates for polynomials whose zeros are within a circle

Let p(z) be a polynomial of degree n having all its zeros in |z|≤k;  k≤1, then for each r>0, p>1, q>1 with p−1+q−1=1, Aziz and Ahemad (1996) recently proved that n{∫02π|p(eiθ)|rdθ}1/r≤{∫02π|1+keiθ|prdθ}1/pr{∫02π|p′(eiθ)|qrdθ}1/qr. In this paper, we extend the above inequality to the class of polynomials p(z)=anzn+∑v=μnan−vzn−v;1≤μ≤n having all its zeros in |z|≤k;  k≤1 and obtain a generalization as well as a refinement of the above result

Comparison of three buoyancy extended versions of the k–ϵ–t′2 model in predicting turbulent plane plume

    Get PDF
AbstractIn the present paper, turbulent plane plume in a quiescent ambience has been numerically studied using three different versions of the buoyancy extended k–ϵ–t′2 model. The performance of models is analysed by means of a detailed comparison between the predictions and the experimental observations reported in the literature. In addition, the predictions by the Reynolds stress and the heat flux transport (RSHFT) model reported in the literature are also included in the comparison to examine the effectiveness of k–ϵ–t′2 models relative to the higher order RSHFT model. The comparison shows that the mean flow quantities predicted by all the models agree well with the experimental observations. However, considerable differences are observed in the predicted turbulent quantities

On the location of the zeros of analytic functions

In this paper we obtain regions containing all the zeros of a class of analytic functions whose coefficients are subject to certain conditions. Our results sharpen some of the results known in this direction. Also we give some examples to show that in some cases the regions obtained by our results are considerably sharper than the regions obtained by known results

Abstract. In this paper, we study the growth of polynomials of degree n having all its zeros on |z| = k , k 1 . Using the notation M(p,t) = ma

Effects of fish and prawn culture on physico-chemical parameters of water and rice yield in rice fields

An experiment was conducted with five treatments i.e. rice combined with fish having regular urea fertilization (T1), rice combined with prawn having regular urea fertilization (T2), rice combined with fish with supplementary feeding (T3), rice combined with prawn with supplementary feeding (T4) and without fish and prawn (T5) was kept as control. The dissolved oxygen values obtained in treatments with fish both in morning and afternoon were lower than the values of prawn containing treatments and control. The values of nitrate-N, ammonia-N, phosphate-P and chlorophyll-a were higher in fish containing treatments than the prawn containing treatments and control. Between the two fish containing treatments the higher gross (539.44 kg/ha) and net (440.14 kg/ha) yield were obtained in T3 with supplementary feeding and the lower gross (424.88 kg/ha) and net (314.32 kg/ha) yield were recorded in T1 without supplementary feeding. Again, between two prawn containing treatments the higher gross (108.69 kg/ha) and net (81.92 kg/ha) yield were obtained in T4 with supplementary feeding and lower gross (64.32 kg/ha) and net (30.98 kg/ha) yield were recorded in T2 without supplementary feeding. The highest yield of rice grain (3.45 mt/ha) and straw (6.37 mt/ha) were obtained in T1 with fish having urea fertilization without feeding

Impact of common carp, Cyprinus carpio (L.) and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) on arthropods population, zoobenthos and weeds in rice-fish culture

An experiment was carried out in the fields of the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh to determine the impact of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture on arthropod population, zoobenthos and weeds of rice field. The treatments were: (1) rice combined with mono sex tilapia, (2) rice combined with common carp, (3) rice combined with a mixed culture of mono sex tilapia and common carp and (4) rice alone. It was observed that tilapia significantly reduced the number of arthropods, green leafhoppers and white leafhoppers in the rice-fish production systems. Benthos analysis revealed significant effects of fish culture on the abundance of molluscs, oligochaete worms and chironomid larvae. Lowest number of benthos was obtained in the treatments with common carp and significant reduction of the weed biomass was observed, especially in the tilapia containing plots. Based on the results of the study it can be suggested that common carp may play an important role in controlling of benthic organisms, while tilapia might be more effective to control terrestrial arthropods and weeds
