Perceptually guided Computer-Generated Holography
Computer-Generated Holography (CGH) promises to deliver genuine, high-quality visuals at any depth. We argue that combining CGH and perceptually guided graphics can soon lead to practical holographic display systems that deliver perceptually realistic images. We propose a new CGH method called metameric varifocal holograms. Our CGH method generates images only at a user’s focus plane while displayed images are statistically correct and indistinguishable from actual targets across peripheral vision (metamers). Thus, a user observing our holograms is set to perceive a high quality visual at their gaze location. At the same time, the integrity of the image follows a statistically correct trend in the remaining peripheral parts. We demonstrate our differentiable CGH optimization pipeline on modern GPUs, and we support our findings with a display prototype. Our method will pave the way towards realistic visuals free from classical CGH problems, such as speckle noise or poor visual quality
A high-affinity antibody against the CSP N-terminal domain lacks Plasmodium falciparum inhibitory activity
Malaria is a global health concern and research efforts are ongoing to develop a superior vaccine to RTS,S/AS01. To guide immunogen design, we seek a comprehensive understanding of the protective humoral response against Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP). In contrast to the well-studied responses to the repeat region and the C-terminus, the antibody response against the N-terminal domain of PfCSP (N-CSP) remains obscure. Here, we characterized the molecular recognition and functional efficacy of the N-CSP-specific monoclonal antibody 5D5. The crystal structure at 1.85 Åresolution revealed that 5D5 binds an α-helical epitope in N-CSP with high affinity through extensive shape and charge complementarity, and the unusual utilization of an N-linked glycan. Nevertheless, functional studies indicated low 5D5 binding to live Pf sporozoites, and lack of sporozoite inhibition in vitro and in mosquitoes. Overall, our data on low recognition and inhibition of sporozoites do not support the inclusion of the 5D5 epitope into the next generation of CSP-based vaccines.Summary Statement The Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite surface protein, PfCSP, is an attractive vaccine target, but the antibody response against the CSP N-terminal domain has remained understudied. Here, to guide immunogen design, Thai et al. provide insights into the binding motif and functional efficacy of the N-terminal domain-specific monoclonal antibody, 5D5
INVESTIGATION OF THE TRANSMISSION AND STOPPING OF LIGHT IONS PASSING THROUGH A PLASMA TARGET
Transmission and energy losses of 2 MeV/u Carbon and Sulphur beams passing through a plasma target, have been extensively investigated. A hydrogen plasma ignited by an electrical discharge was coupled to the Orsay Tandem beam accelerator. Fluctuations in beam transmission have been observed and attributed to a magnetic focusing effect generated during the plasma evolution. Energy loss measurements were performed on the basis of time of flight techniques and indicate an enhanced stopping power of the plasma relative to its cold matter equivalent

Linear-response theory and lattice dynamics: a muffin-tin orbital approach
A detailed description of a method for calculating static linear-response
functions in the problem of lattice dynamics is presented. The method is based
on density functional theory and it uses linear muffin-tin orbitals as a basis
for representing first-order corrections to the one-electron wave functions. As
an application we calculate phonon dispersions in Si and NbC and find good
agreement with experiments.Comment: 18 pages, Revtex, 2 ps figures, uuencoded, gzip'ed, tar'ed fil
The physics of dynamical atomic charges: the case of ABO3 compounds
Based on recent first-principles computations in perovskite compounds,
especially BaTiO3, we examine the significance of the Born effective charge
concept and contrast it with other atomic charge definitions, either static
(Mulliken, Bader...) or dynamical (Callen, Szigeti...). It is shown that static
and dynamical charges are not driven by the same underlying parameters. A
unified treatment of dynamical charges in periodic solids and large clusters is
proposed. The origin of the difference between static and dynamical charges is
discussed in terms of local polarizability and delocalized transfers of charge:
local models succeed in reproducing anomalous effective charges thanks to large
atomic polarizabilities but, in ABO3 compounds, ab initio calculations favor
the physical picture based upon transfer of charges. Various results concerning
barium and strontium titanates are presented. The origin of anomalous Born
effective charges is discussed thanks to a band-by-band decomposition which
allows to identify the displacement of the Wannier center of separated bands
induced by an atomic displacement. The sensitivity of the Born effective
charges to microscopic and macroscopic strains is examined. Finally, we
estimate the spontaneous polarization in the four phases of barium titanate.Comment: 25 pages, 6 Figures, 10 Tables, LaTe
From mechatronics to the Cloud
At its conception mechatronics was viewed purely in terms of the ability to integrate the technologies of mechanical and electrical engineering with computer science to transfer functionality, and hence complexity, from the mechanical domain to the software domain. However, as technologies, and in particular computing technologies, have evolved so the nature of mechatronics has changed from being purely associated with essentially stand-alone systems such as robots to providing the smart objects and systems which are the building blocks for Cyber-Physical Systems, and hence for Internet of Things and Cloud-based systems. With the possible advent of a 4th Industrial Revolution structured around these systems level concepts, mechatronics must again adapt its world view, if not its underlying technologies, to meet this new challenge
