Bent-Double Radio Sources as Probes of Intergalactic Gas
As the most common environment in the universe, groups of galaxies are likely
to contain a significant fraction of the missing baryons in the form of
intergalactic gas. The density of this gas is an important factor in whether
ram pressure stripping and strangulation affect the evolution of galaxies in
these systems. We present a method for measuring the density of intergalactic
gas using bent-double radio sources that is independent of temperature, making
it complementary to current absorption line measurements. We use this method to
probe intergalactic gas in two different environments: inside a small group of
galaxies as well as outside of a larger group at a 2 Mpc radius and measure
total gas densities of and per cubic centimeter (random and systematic
errors) respectively. We use X-ray data to place an upper limit of K on the temperature of the intragroup gas in the small group.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Ap
Local Electronic and Magnetic Studies of an Artificial La2FeCrO6 Double Perovskite
Through the utilization of element-resolved polarized x-ray probes, the
electronic and magnetic state of an artificial La2FeCrO6 double perovskite were
explored. Applying unit-cell level control of thin film growth on SrTiO3 (111),
the rock salt double perovskite structure can be created for this system, which
does not have an ordered perovskite phase in the bulk. We find that the Fe and
Cr are in the proper 3+ valence state, but, contrary to previous studies, the
element-resolved magnetic studies find the moments in field are small and show
no evidence of a sizable magnetic moment in the remanent state.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Full Bulk Spin Polarization and Intrinsic Tunnel Barriers at the Surface of Layered Manganites
Transmission of information using the spin of the electron as well as its
charge requires a high degree of spin polarization at surfaces. At surfaces
however this degree of polarization can be quenched by competing interactions.
Using a combination of surface sensitive x-ray and tunneling probes, we show
for the quasi-two-dimensional bilayer manganites that the outermost Mn-O
bilayer, alone, is affected: it is a 1-nm thick insulator that exhibits no
long-range ferromagnetic order while the next bilayer displays the full spin
polarization of the bulk. Such an abrupt localization of the surface effects is
due to the two-dimensional nature of the layered manganite while the loss of
ferromagnetism is attributed to weakened double exchange in the reconstructed
surface bilayer and a resultant antiferromagnetic phase. The creation of a
well-defined surface insulator demonstrates the ability to naturally
self-assemble two of the most demanding components of an ideal magnetic tunnel

Identifying Inconsistencies and Reporting Deficits in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (TMB) Case Reports: A Systematic Review and TMB Adapted CAse REport (CARE) Guidelines Audit
poster abstractIntroduction: Case reports are a fundamental tool through which practitioners in applied disciplines are able to inform research and impact their field by detailing the presentation, treatment, and follow-up of a single individual they’ve encountered in practice. Ideally, published case reports contribute to reductions in the research/practice gap by allowing practitioners to describe current practice situations and outcomes to researchers. Unfortunately, inconsistencies in case reporting across applied disciplines have limited the impact of these fundamental sources of clinical evidence. In 2013, reporting guidelines for case reports (CARE guidelines) were published to standardize the reporting of medical case reports. In recognition of discipline differences and reporting needs, the therapeutic massage and bodywork (TMB) adapted CARE guidelines were published in late 2014 to specifically guide reporting of case reports involving massage therapy applied as a treatment. The TMB adapted CARE guidelines identified 5 primary case report components (pre-manuscript, Introduction, Case Presentation, Results, and Discussion), each with unique subcomponents (e.g., title, keywords, abstract for the pre-manuscript component) ranging in number from 6 - 31. By checking off each component and subcomponent included in any given case report, a summary score for TMB adapted CARE guidelines compliance (range: 0 – 65) can be derived. In order to determine whether the consistency of TMB case reporting is improved after publication of the TMB adapted CARE guidelines, a pre-guideline state of TMB case reports is needed. The current study seeks to provide rich descriptive statistics about the state of TMB related case reports in the literature prior to 2015.
Methods: A systematic review using PubMed and CINAHL databases identified 935 unique citations using first the MeSH term “Therapy, Soft Tissue” as the subject heading and publication type “case reports” and then a keyword search in PubMed (acupressure, shiatsu, zhi ya, chih ya, reflexology, rolfing, bodywork, massage, case report, case reports, case study, case studies NOT carotid sinus massage, heart massage, cardiac massage, animals) and CINAHL (subject headings: massage therapists, massage, reflexology, case study). Study inclusion/exclusion criteria required: case report, human, English, peer-reviewed, published prior to 2015. Administered massage treatment(s) had to have been from a professional TMB practitioner who had a role in the case’s reporting and publication. N=34 articles met inclusion criteria and were reviewed by two independent reviewers. Through a REDCap data collection form, components and subcomponents of the TMB adapted CARE reporting guidelines included in each article were identified. Variable coding and descriptive statistics were completed using SAS 9.3 by a non-reviewing team member. TMB adapted CARE reporting compliance scores were determined for each case report.
Results: Preliminary results for n=30 (final presentation to include all N=34) indicate mean compliance scores = 40.3 (±9.2) and ranged from 10-50. Article sections with the most robust scoring included pre-manuscript items and introduction with average section scores obtaining 75% and 70% of the possible points, respectively. Case presentation and results sections scored the poorest, obtaining an average of 58% and 53% of the possible points, respectively.
Conclusions: Case reports in the TMB field published before possible exposure to the TMB adapted CARE guidelines demonstrate inconsistent and deficient reporting. If case reports in the TMB field are to have an impact, consistent and rigorous reporting must be adopted. In an effort to improve the state and impact of TMB case reports in the literature, TMB practitioners should use the TMB adapted CARE guidelines as a checklist when preparing their case reports for publication

INTRODUCTION:
Case reports are a fundamental tool through which therapeutic massage and bodywork (TMB) practitioners can inform research and impact their field by detailing the presentation, treatment, and follow-up of a single individual encountered in practice. Inconsistencies in case reporting limit their impact as fundamental sources of clinical evidence. Using the TMB-adapted CAse REport (CARE) guidelines, the current study sought to provide a rich description regarding the reporting quality of TMB practitioner authored TMB case reports in the literature.
METHODS:
1) Systematic identification of published, peer-reviewed TMB case reports authored by TMB practitioners following PRISMA recommendations; 2) audit development based on TMB-adapted CARE guidelines; 3) audit implementation; and 4) descriptive analysis of audit scores.
RESULTS:
Our search identified 977 articles and 35 met study inclusion criteria. On average, TMB case reports included approximately 58% of the total items identified as necessary by the TMB-adapted CARE guidelines. Introduction sections of case reports had the best item reporting (80% on average), while Case Presentation (54%) and Results (52%) sections scored moderately overall, with only 20% of necessary Practitioner Description items included on average. Audit scores revealed inconsistent abstract reporting and few audited case reports including client race (20%), perspective (26%), and occupation/activities (40%); practitioner practice setting (12%), training (12%), scope-of-practice (29%), and credentialing (20%); adverse events or lack thereof (17%); and some aspect of informed consent (34%). Treatment descriptor item reporting varied from high to low. Various implications of concern are discussed.
CONCLUSION:
The current audit and descriptive analysis highlight several reporting inconsistencies in TMB case reports prior to 2015. Reporting guidelines for case reports are important if standards for, and impact of, TMB case reports are desired. Adherence to reporting specifications outlined by the TMB-adapted CARE guidelines could improve the impact and usability of TMB case reports in research, education, and practice
Tuning Fermilab Heavy Quarks in 2+1 Flavor Lattice QCD with Application to Hyperfine Splittings
We report the non-perturbative tuning of parameters--- kappa_c, kappa_b, and
kappa_crit ---that determine the heavy-quark mass in the Fermilab action. This
requires the computation of the masses of Ds^(*) and Bs^(*) mesons comprised of
a Fermilab heavy quark and a staggered light quark. Additionally, we report the
hyperfine splittings for Ds and Bs mesons as a cross-check of our simulation
and analysis methods. We find a splitting of 145 +/- 15 MeV for the Ds system
and 40 +/- 9 MeV for the Bs system. These are in good agreement with the
Particle Data Group average values of 143.9 +/- 0.4 MeV and 46.1 +/- 1.5 MeV,
respectively. The calculations are carried out with the MILC 2+1 flavor gauge
configurations at three lattice spacings approximately 0.15, 0.12, and 0.09

Sustainable Roof Systems: Design Report
This report describes the design of a prefabricated sustainable roof system for LionForce Systems. While being economical, environmentally sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to assemble on site, the design includes a sturdy and durable roof-to-wall joint that minimizes waste, insulates the interior, and locks out moisture. In addition, the design facilitates a 20-foot unsupported roof span and a 4-foot overhang beyond the exterior wall, with allowances for variation in roof pitch. The roof-to-wall joint was successfully designed and prototyped with less than half the $1200 allowable budget using galvanized steel with Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) insulation
RED TAPE IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: UAV POLICY
Reports over the past two decades have documented concern that the growth of regulation on research is reducing scientific productivity. While much of the burden comes from mandated standards, institutions increase the burdens when they add elective rules. This study examines regulatory responses in higher education to the implementation of domestic unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the United States of America (U.S.). The variance in UAV policies provides insight into regulatory responses to a controversial emerging technology. All higher education institutions share a common mission of education, research, and service, although the amount of attention given to each varies. UAVs create similar risks across institutions. Moreover, all campuses are subject to identical Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. For this study, four educational institutions’ UAV policies from all fifty U.S. states were examined. The policies were classified from none to highly restrictive. Consistent with expectations, the stringency of UAV regulations is related to the institution’s structure and mission. Publicly funded institutions, particularly the land-grant universities with relatively more community outreach, had the most restrictive policies. Institutions in states with local government ordinances restricting UAVs also tend to have stricter policies. More stringent UAV rules exist in research-oriented institutions. Neither organizational size nor the existence of an aviation program affects institutional UAV policies. Because some of the policies adopted in higher education go beyond the rules mandated by the FAA, some may label the elective policies as being excessive “red tape” that thwart the institutional mission and stymie research
Strong Far-IR Cooling Lines, Peculiar CO Kinematics and Possible Star Formation Suppression in Hickson Compact Group 57
We present [C II] and [O I] observations from Herschel and CO(1-0) maps from
the Combined Array for{\dag} Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) of the
Hickson Compact Group HCG 57, focusing on the galaxies HCG 57a and HCG 57d. HCG
57a has been previously shown to contain enhanced quantities of warm molecular
hydrogen consistent with shock and/or turbulent heating. Our observations show
that HCG 57d has strong [C II] emission compared to L and weak
CO(1-0), while in HCG 57a, both the [C II] and CO(1-0) are strong. HCG 57a lies
at the upper end of the normal distribution of [C II]/CO and [C II]/FIR ratios,
and its far-IR cooling supports a low density warm diffuse gas that falls close
to the boundary of acceptable PDR models. However, the power radiated in the [C
II] and warm H emission have similar magnitudes, as seen in other
shock-dominated systems and predicted by recent models. We suggest that
shock-heating of the [C II] is a viable alternative to photoelectric heating in
violently disturbed diffuse gas. The existence of shocks is also consistent
with peculiar CO kinematics in the galaxy, indicating highly non-circular
motions are present. These kinematically disturbed CO regions also show
evidence of suppressed star formation, falling a factor of 10-30 below normal
galaxies on the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. We suggest that the peculiar
properties of both galaxies are consistent with a highly dissipative off-center
collisional encounter between HCG 57d and 57a, creating ring-like morphologies
in both systems. Highly dissipative gas-on-gas collisions may be more common in
dense groups because of the likelihood of repeated multiple encounters. The
possibility of shock-induced SF suppression may explain why a subset of these
HCG galaxies have been found previously to fall in the mid-infrared green
