    Development of an integrated BEM approach for hot fluid structure interaction

    Significant progress was made toward the goal of developing a general purpose boundary element method for hot fluid-structure interaction. For the solid phase, a boundary-only formulation was developed and implemented for uncoupled transient thermoelasticity in two dimensions. The elimination of volume discretization not only drastically reduces required modeling effort, but also permits unconstrained variation of the through-the-thickness temperature distribution. Meanwhile, for the fluids, fundamental solutions were derived for transient incompressible and compressible flow in the absence of the convective terms. Boundary element formulations were developed and described. For the incompressible case, the necessary kernal functions, under transient and steady-state conditions, were derived and fully implemented into a general purpose, multi-region boundary element code. Several examples were examined to study the suitability and convergence characteristics of the various algorithms

    Assessing Smartphone Ease of Use and Learning from the Perspective of Novice and Expert Users: Development and Illustration of Mobile Benchmark Tasks

    Assessing usability of device types with novel function sets that are adopted by diverse user groups requires one to explore a variety of approaches. In this paper, we develop such an approach to assess usability of smartphone devices. Using a three-stage Delphi-method study, we identify sets of benchmark tasks that can be used to assess usability for various user types. These task sets enable one to evaluate smartphone platforms from two perspectives: ease of learning (for those unfamiliar with smartphone use) and ease of use (for experienced users). We then demonstrate an approach for using this task set by performing an exploratory study of both inexperienced smartphone users (using a convenience sample) and experienced users (using the keystroke model). Our exploration illustrates the methodology for using such a task set and, in so doing, reveals significant differences among the leading smartphone platforms between novice and expert users. As such, we provide some preliminary evidence that ease of use is indeed significantly different from ease of learning

    Evolution of Supermassive Black Hole Binary and Acceleration of Jet Precession in Galactic Nuclei

    Supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) is expected with the hierarchical galaxy formation model. Currently, physics processes dominating the evolution of a SMBHB are unclear. An interesting question is whether we could observationally determine the evolution of SMBHB and give constraints on the physical processes. Jet precession have been observed in many AGNs and generally attributed to disk precession. In this paper we calculate the time variation of jet precession and conclude that jet precession is accelerated in SMBHB systems but decelerated in others. The acceleration of jet precession dPpr/dtdP_{\rm pr} / dt is related to jet precession timescale PprP_{\rm pr} and SMBHB evolution timescale τa\tau_{\rm a}, dPprdtΛPprτa{dP_{\rm pr} \over dt} \simeq - \Lambda {P_{\rm pr} \over \tau_{\rm a}}. Our calculations based on the models for jet precession and SMBHB evolution show that dPpr/dtdP_{\rm pr} / dt can be as high as about 1.0- 1.0 with a typical value -0.2 and can be easily detected. We discussed the differential jet precession for NGC1275 observed in the literature. If the observed rapid acceleration of jet precession is true, the jet precession is due to the orbital motion of an unbound SMBHB with mass ratio q0.76q\approx 0.76. When jets precessed from the ancient bubbles to the currently active jets, the separation of SMBHB decrease from about 1.46Kpc1.46 {\rm Kpc} to 0.80Kpc0.80 {\rm Kpc} with an averaged decreasing velocity da/dt1.54×106cm/sda/dt \simeq - 1.54 \times 10^6 {\rm cm/s} and evolution timescale τa7.5×107yr\tau_{\rm a} \approx 7.5\times 10^7 {\rm yr}. However, if we assume a steady jet precession for many cycles, the observations implies a hard SMBHB with mass ratio q0.21q\approx 0.21 and separation a0.29pca\approx 0.29 {\rm pc}.Comment: 29 pages, no figure, Accepted for publication in Ap

    Vacuum-UV negative photoion spectroscopy of CF3Cl, CF3Br and CF3I

    Using synchrotron radiation negative ions have been detected by mass spectrometry following vacuum-UV photoexcitation of trifluorochloromethane (CF3_3Cl), trifluorobromomethane (CF3_3Br) and trifluoroiodomethane (CF3_3I). The anions F^-, X^-, F2_2^-, FX^-, CF^-, CF2_2^- and CF3_3^- were observed from all three molecules, where X = Cl, Br or I, and their ion yields recorded in the range 8-35 eV. With the exception of Br^- and I^-, the anions observed show a linear dependence of signal with pressure, showing that they arise from unimolecular ion-pair dissociation. Dissociative electron attachment, following photoionization of CF3_3Br and CF3_3I as the source of low-energy electrons, is shown to dominate the observed Br^- and I^- signals, respectively. Cross sections for ion-pair formation are put on to an absolute scale by calibrating the signal strengths with those of F^- from both SF6_6 and CF4_4. These anion cross sections are normalized to vacuum-UV absorption cross sections, where available, and the resulting quantum yields are reported. Anion appearance energies are used to calculate upper limits to 298 K bond dissociation energies for D0D^0(CF3_3-X) which are consistent with literature values. We report new data for D0D^0(CF2_2I^--F) ≤ 2.7 ± 0.2 eV and ΔfH2980\Delta_fH^0_{298} (CF2_2I+^+) ≤ (598 ± 22) kJ mol1^{-1}. No ion-pair formation is observed below the ionization energy of the parent molecule for CF3_3Cl and CF3_3Br, and only weak signals (in both I^- and F^-) are detected for CF3_3I. These observations suggest neutral photodissociation is the dominant exit channel to Rydberg state photoexcitation at these lower energies

    This paper demonstrates how the REA enterprise ontology can be used to construct simulation models for business processes, value chains and collaboration spaces in supply chains. These models support various high-level and operational management simulation applications, e.g. the analysis of enterprise sustainability and day-to-day planning. First, the basic constructs of the REA ontology and the ExSpect modelling language for simulation are introduced. Second, collaboration space, value chain and business process models and their conceptual dependencies are shown, using the ExSpect language. Third, an exhibit demonstrates the use of value chain models in predicting the financial performance of an enterprise

    A Longitudinal Study Of Post-traumatic Growth And Psychological Distress In Colorectal Cancer Survivors

    The stability of post-traumatic growth overtime and the relationship between post-traumatic growth and traditional distress outcomes remains unclear. We tracked post-traumatic growth in a population-based sample of colorectal cancer patients from soon after diagnosis to five years subsequently to assess the heterogeneity of a post-traumatic growth response to cancer over time and describe the simultaneous and longitudinal relationships between post-traumatic growth and psychological distress. 1966 colorectal patients who were five months post diagnosis were assessed six times over a five year period. There was considerable heterogeneity associated with both psychological distress and benefit finding scores over time. However, both for benefit finding and psychological distress, the variation in individual scores suggested an underlying positive linear trend and both lagged and lagged change components. Specifically, benefit finding and psychological distress are mutual leading indicators of each other. First, benefit finding served as a leading indicator of distress, in that increases in reported benefit finding from year to year predicted higher future increases in psychological distress. As well, in an inverse relationship, psychological distress served as a leading indicator of benefit finding, such that increases in reported distress from year to year predicted lower future increases in benefit finding. Post-traumatic growth may reflect patients coping efforts to enhance perceptions of wellbeing in response to escalating cancer-related threats, acting as harbinger of increasing trajectories of psychological distress. This explanation is consistent with a cognitive dissonance response in which threats to the integrity of the self then lead to a tendency to accentuate positive aspects of the self
