Pioneering the human development revolution: Analysing the trajectory of Mahbub ul Haq
Mahbub ul Haq's work to coordinate, establish and propagate the human development approach offers an example of effective leadership in promoting more ethical socio-economic development. This article reviews Pioneering the Human Development Revolution-An Intellectual Biography of Mahbub ul Haq (edited by Haq and Ponzio), and extends themes from the United Nations Intellectual History Project to examine Haq's contributions in terms of four aspects of leadership: articulating and applying values that combine depth with broad appeal; providing a fruitful and vivid way of seeing, a 'vision', that reflects the values; embodying the values and vision in workable practical proposals; and supporting and communicating the previous aspects through wide and relevant networks. It suggests that the human development approach may need to update its values and vision, including through better integration of human security thinking, if it is to retain the leadership role it acquired thanks to Haq
A study of frequency and pulses for stepper motor controller system by using programmable logic controller
The stepper motor movement process produced different frequency and pulses. This research explained about the frequency and pulses for the stepper motor movement by using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) as research method. The study was done to find the suitable frequency and pulses for stepper motor movement by developing a prototype stepper motor controller system. The pulse frequency used did not affected the distance of moving load in the stepper motor operations. The increasing number of pulse frequency only will affect the time taken for the stepper motor to complete its operations. The result showed that number of pulse frequency at high operation was 5000 Hz. Pulse number reacted as a manipulated variable that affected both factor which is time taken of stepper motor operation and the distance of moving load
Managing hyperglycaemia during antenatal steroid administration, labour and birth in pregnant women with diabetes
Optimal glycaemic control before and during pregnancy improves both maternal and fetal outcomes. This article summarizes the recently published guidelines on the management of glycaemic control in pregnant women with diabetes on obstetric wards and delivery units produced by the Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care and available in full at www.diabetes.org.uk/joint-british-diabetes-society and https://abcd.care/joint-british-diabetes-societies-jbds-inpatient-care-group. Hyperglycaemia following steroid administration can be managed by variable rate intravenous insulin infusion (VRIII) or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) in women who are willing and able to safely self‐manage insulin dose adjustment. All women with diabetes should have capillary blood glucose (CBG) measured hourly once they are in established labour. Those who are found to be higher than 7 mmol/l on two consecutive occasions should be started on VRIII. If general anaesthesia is used, CBG should be monitored every 30 min in the theatre. Both the VRIII and CSII rate should be reduced by at least 50% once the placenta is delivered. The insulin dose needed after delivery in insulin‐treated Type 2 and Type 1 diabetes is usually 25% less than the doses needed at the end of first trimester. Additional snacks may be needed after delivery especially if breastfeeding. Stop all anti‐diabetes medications after delivery in gestational diabetes. Continue to monitor CBG before and 1 h after meals for up to 24 h after delivery to pick up any pre‐existing diabetes or new‐onset diabetes in pregnancy. Women with Type 2 diabetes on oral treatment can continue to take metformin after birth
Effect of Deep Brain Stimulation on Parkinson's Nonmotor Symptoms following Unilateral DBS: A Pilot Study
Parkinson's disease (PD) management has traditionally focused largely on motor symptoms. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and globus pallidus internus (GPi) are effective treatments for motor symptoms. Nonmotor symptoms (NMSs) may also profoundly affect the quality of life. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate NMS changes pre- and post-DBS utilizing two recently developed questionnaires. Methods. NMS-Q (questionnaire) and NMS-S (scale) were administered to PD patients before/after unilateral DBS (STN/GPi targets). Results. Ten PD patients (9 STN implants, 1 GPi implant) were included. The three most frequent NMS symptoms identified utilizing NMS-Q in pre-surgical patients were gastrointestinal (100%), sleep (100%), and urinary (90%). NMS sleep subscore significantly decreased (−1.6 points ± 1.8, P = 0.03). The three most frequent NMS symptoms identified in pre-surgical patients using NMS-S were gastrointestinal (90%), mood (80%), and cardiovascular (80%). The largest mean decrease of NMS scores was seen in miscellaneous symptoms (pain, anosmia, weight change, and sweating) (−7 points ± 8.7), and cardiovascular/falls (−1.9, P = 0.02). Conclusion. Non-motor symptoms improved on two separate questionnaires following unilateral DBS for PD. Future studies are needed to confirm these findings and determine their clinical significance as well as to examine the strengths/weaknesses of each questionnaire/scale
Strategies for soil amelioration using sulphur in salt affected soils
Effective use of salt affected
soils needs the development of the most
efficient and suitable reclamation
technology to optimize farm management
and better crop yields. Different chemical
methods and amendments are used to
reclaim the salt affected soils and after
reclamation such soils may be used for
sustainable agricultural production. Choice
of a chemical amendment depends on its
availability, cost, handling and time of
application. Application of sulfur is very
effective technique to suppress the uptake of
undesired toxic elements and to improve the
quantity and quality of produce in salt
affected soils. So, a three-year field
experiment was carried out to evaluate the
comparative reclamation efficiency of two
sulfur sources, i.e elemental sulfur and
gypsum to improve the soil conditions by
reducing the salinity/sodicity impact and
yield characteristics of rice and wheat crop.
A saline-sodic field {(ECe = 6.10 dS m-1,
pHs = 9.21 and SAR = 41.67 (mmol L-1)1/2,
SO4-S = 16.0 (mg kg-1) and soil gypsum
requirement (SGR) of 9.10 t ha-1 for 0-15 cm
soil depth} was selected. The treatments
included were: control, gypsum application
@ 100 SGR, S application @ 25, 50, 57,
100 and 125 % of SGR. Statistical analysis
of three-year pooled data showed that
varying levels of sulfur and gypsum
significantly improved soil properties and
rice-wheat yield than control, however,
gypsum @ 100% of soil GR was at par with
S @ 125 and 100% of SGR in term terms of
improving yield component of both test
crops and reducing soil pHs, ECe and SAR.
Efficiency of treatment could be arranged as
gypsum @ 100% SGR = S @ 125 % of
SGR= S @ 100% of SGR> S @ 75 % of
SGR> S @ 50 % of SGR> S @ 25% of
SGR>control
Effective Lagrangians and Chiral Random Matrix Theory
Recently, sum rules were derived for the inverse eigenvalues of the Dirac
operator. They were obtained in two different ways: i) starting from the
low-energy effective Lagrangian and ii) starting from a random matrix theory
with the symmetries of the Dirac operator. This suggests that the effective
theory can be obtained directly from the random matrix theory. Previously, this
was shown for three or more colors with fundamental fermions. In this paper we
construct the effective theory from a random matrix theory for two colors in
the fundamental representation and for an arbitrary number of colors in the
adjoint representation. We construct a fermionic partition function for
Majorana fermions in Euclidean space time. Their reality condition is
formulated in terms of complex conjugation of the second kind.Comment: 27 page
From Quantum Systems to L-Functions: Pair Correlation Statistics and Beyond
The discovery of connections between the distribution of energy levels of
heavy nuclei and spacings between prime numbers has been one of the most
surprising and fruitful observations in the twentieth century. The connection
between the two areas was first observed through Montgomery's work on the pair
correlation of zeros of the Riemann zeta function. As its generalizations and
consequences have motivated much of the following work, and to this day remains
one of the most important outstanding conjectures in the field, it occupies a
central role in our discussion below. We describe some of the many techniques
and results from the past sixty years, especially the important roles played by
numerical and experimental investigations, that led to the discovery of the
connections and progress towards understanding the behaviors. In our survey of
these two areas, we describe the common mathematics that explains the
remarkable universality. We conclude with some thoughts on what might lie ahead
in the pair correlation of zeros of the zeta function, and other similar
quantities.Comment: Version 1.1, 50 pages, 6 figures. To appear in "Open Problems in
