    Illusions of gunk

    The possibility of gunk has been used to argue against mereological nihilism. This paper explores two responses on the part of the microphysical mereological nihilist: (1) the contingency defence, which maintains that nihilism is true of the actual world; but that at other worlds, composition occurs; (2) the impossibility defence, which maintains that nihilism is necessary true, and so gunk worlds are impossible. The former is argued to be ultimately unstable; the latter faces the explanatorily burden of explaining the illusion that gunk is possible. It is argued that we can discharge this burden by focussing on the contingency of the microphysicalist aspect of microphysical mereological nihilism. The upshot is that gunk-based arguments against microphysical mereological nihilism can be resisted

    A 'p-n' diode with hole and electron-doped lanthanum manganite

    The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode. The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of such a p-n diode, using the polaronic semiconducting regime of doped manganites.Comment: PostScript text and 2 figures, to be published in Appl.     Background: Paravasation is a rare but severe complication of treatment with cytotoxic agents. Some anticancer drugs are considered to be of high toxicity (vesicant), some are merely irritant, and some are regarded as nearly non-toxic to healthy tissue as is the case with cyclophosphamide. Case Report: In this report, we present the first case of severe tissue damage caused by a paravasation of cyclophosphamide in a breast cancer patient receiving chemotherapy. Conclusion: Therefore, every attending oncological physician should be aware of the possibility of severe tissue damage as a consequence of cyclophosphamide paravasation

    26. Chromosomal damage and survival of keratinocytes and fibroblasts after irradiation with 200 kV or 25 kV X-rays

    A relative biological effectiveness of 1 is accepted for soft X-rays (25–30 kV), which are applied in diagnostic radiology (mammography). However, it has been shown that soft X-rays can be more effective in cell killing and chromosomal damage. The present study was initiated to define biological effects of low-energy X-rays in vitro. Experiments were performed with 25 kV X-rays and 200 kV reference X-rays on neonatal human keratinocytes (HEKn), and NIH/3T3 mouse fibroblasts. Cell survival was studied with graded doses in a clonogenic assay, chromosomal damage in a micronucleus (MN) assay. The surviving fraction at 2 Gy for keratinocytes was 46±5% after 200 kV and 33±11% after 25 kV X-rays. Linear-quadratic cell survival analysis yielded α=0.305±0.033 Gy-1 and β=0.048±0.011 Gy-2 for 200 kV and α=0.399±0.103 Gy-1 and β=0.048±0.054 Gy-2 for 25 kV. For 3T3 fibroblasts an SF2 of 53±3% after 200 kV and 61±18% after 25 kV was observed. Values of α=0.24±0.02 Gy-1 and β=0.022±0.002 Gy-2 for 200 kV and α=0.10±0.05 Gy-1 and β=0.070±0.010 Gy-2 for 25 kV were derived. In conclusion, keratinocyte survival was similar for both radiation qualities. For fibroblasts, a reduction in survival at higher doses was observed. Results from MN studies will be presented

    Prediction and benefits of minimal disease activity in patients with psoriatic arthritis and active skin disease in the ADEPT trial

    Objectives: To determine the proportion of patients with psoriatic arthritis in the Adalimumab Effectiveness in Psoriatic Arthritis trial achieving minimal disease activity (MDA) and its individual components at 1 or more visits over 144 weeks, identify baseline predictors of MDA achievement, and evaluate the association of MDA status with independent quality of life (QoL)-related patient-reported outcomes (PROs). Methods: Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify the baseline characteristics that predicted achievement of MDA at individual time points (weeks 12 through 144) or sustained MDA (achievement of MDA at 2 consecutive time points 12 weeks apart). The association of independent QoL-related PROs with MDA achievement was evaluated at weeks 24 and 144. Results: In univariate analyses, higher baseline patient assessment of pain, tender joint count (TJC), enthesitis and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI) score were significantly associated with lower likelihood of achieving MDA at later time points. Multivariate analyses confirmed higher baseline HAQ-DI as a significant predictor for failure to achieve MDA at later time points. Achievement of sustained MDA was associated with lower baseline TJC and HAQ-DI score. Achievement of different MDA components appeared to be treatment dependent. MDA achievers had significantly better QoL-related PROs and greater improvements in PROs from baseline to week 24 compared with non-achievers. Conclusions: Higher HAQ-DI score was the most consistent baseline factor that decreased the likelihood of achieving MDA and sustained MDA at later time points. Achieving MDA was associated with better independent QoL-related PROs

    A review of the evolution of robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty.

    INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is currently a very successful operation but continues to evolve as we try to perfect techniques and improve outcomes for our patients. Robotic hip surgery (RHS) began with the 'active' ROBODOC system in the 1980s. There were drawbacks associated with the original ROBODOC and most recently, the MAKO robot was introduced with early promising results. AIM: The aim of this paper is to provide an up-to-date review surrounding this area and discuss the pros and cons of this technique. METHODS: A literature review searching Medline, Embase, Ovidsp, Cochrane library, pubmed database and google scholar was performed searching keywords including: 'Robotic hip surgery', 'Robotic orthopaedic surgery', 'Computer assisted hip surgery', 'robotic arthroplasty', and 'computer assisted orthopaedic surgery'. CONCLUSION: Robotic hip surgery aims to tackle the limitations of the human factor in surgery by promising reproducible and reliable methods of component positioning in arthroplasty surgery. However, as orthopaedic surgeons, we must critically appraise all new technology and support the use providing there is sound robust evidence backing it

    Piscivorous Bird Use of Aquaculture and Natural Water Bodies in Mississippi

    Double crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) and great egrets (Ardea alba) have an extensive history of human wildlife conflict with the aquaculture industry of western Mississippi, USA, due to their depredation of cultured catfish (Ictalurus spp.). Although aquaculture is abundant, western Mississippi also contains naturally occurring water bodies that offer alternative forage opportunities to these species. How cormorants or egrets distribute themselves among these 2 foraging options is unknown, but it has been generally assumed each species uses aquaculture disproportionately more because of the high density of available prey. To test this assumption, we surveyed these species on aquaculture and naturally occurring water bodies using aerial surveys from October through April of 2015–2016, 2016–2017, and 2017–2018. We modeled the proportion of each species on aquaculture as a function of year, date, and weather-related variables using quasi binomial generalized linear models. Egrets used aquaculture consistently more than what was proportionally available to them and use was not influenced by any of the variables we measured. Proportional use of aquaculture by cormorants was lowest during October through January but steadily increased through April, indicating a distribution shift toward aquaculture in the months immediately prior to their migration. The highest proportional use of aquaculture by cormorants occurred in 2016, a year when lethal control measures were not allowed against cormorants. Conversely, the least proportion of cormorants on aquaculture was in 2015 when cormorants could be lethally controlled under authority of an Aquaculture Depredation Order.     Fine Scale Characteristics of Catfish Aquaculture Ponds Influencing Use by Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) in Northwest Mississippi

    Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) are the main source of depredation at catfish aquaculture facilities in Northwest Mississippi, resulting in significant economic loss. Understanding factors related to pond selection by cormorants could aid in mitigation practices to minimize further loss. We constructed occupancy models to estimate the probability of cormorant presence on catfish ponds against multiple variables associated with each ponds physical surroundings and internal conditions. We also explored cormorant use of aquaculture and natural habitat by using logistic regression to model the proportion of cormorants on aquaculture compared to natural habitat and influences of seasonal variation. Cormorant presence data was collected by aerial survey (n=35) from October to April, of 2015-2017, accounting for an average of 973 catfish ponds and 26 natural water bodies each year. Our results indicate ponds located farther away from trees and activity centers, such as farm workshops, have a higher probability of cormorant use. Larger ponds, and ponds nearer the edge of pond clusters also have an increased probability of use. Specific pond contents influenced cormorant use, including fish species cultured, pond systems, and fish types. From October through January cormorants were distributed more on natural habitat. However, cormorants’ proportional use of aquaculture steadily increased beginning in February. This temporal shift from natural habitat toward aquaculture coincides with cormorant spring migration, indicating an increase in foraging of catfish in preparation for the migration north
