Finite element implementation of Robinson's unified viscoplastic model and its application to some uniaxial and multiaxial problems
A description of the finite element implementation of Robinson's unified viscoplastic model into the General Purpose Finite Element Program (MARC) is presented. To demonstrate its application, the implementation is applied to some uniaxial and multiaxial problems. A comparison of the results for the multiaxial problem of a thick internally pressurized cylinder, obtained using the finite element implementation and an analytical solution, is also presented. The excellent agreement obtained confirms the correct finite element implementation of Robinson's model
Extended Defects in the Potts-Percolation Model of a Solid: Renormalization Group and Monte Carlo Analysis
We extend the model of a 2 solid to include a line of defects. Neighboring
atoms on the defect line are connected by ?springs? of different strength and
different cohesive energy with respect to the rest of the system. Using the
Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization group we show that the elastic energy is an
irrelevant field at the bulk critical point. For zero elastic energy this model
reduces to the Potts model. By using Monte Carlo simulations of the 3- and
4-state Potts model on a square lattice with a line of defects, we confirm the
renormalization-group prediction that for a defect interaction larger than the
bulk interaction the order parameter of the defect line changes discontinuously
while the defect energy varies continuously as a function of temperature at the
bulk critical temperature.Comment: 13 figures, 17 page
Potts-Percolation-Gauss Model of a Solid
We study a statistical mechanics model of a solid. Neighboring atoms are
connected by Hookian springs. If the energy is larger than a threshold the
"spring" is more likely to fail, while if the energy is lower than the
threshold the spring is more likely to be alive. The phase diagram and
thermodynamic quantities, such as free energy, numbers of bonds and clusters,
and their fluctuations, are determined using renormalization-group and
Monte-Carlo techniques.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

Post-modernism's use and abuse of Nietzsche
I focus on Nietzsche's architectural metaphor of self-construction in arguing for the claim that postmodern readings of Nietzsche misunderstand his various attacks on dogmatic philosophy as paving the way for acceptance of a self characterized by fundamental disunity. Nietzsche's attack on essentialist dogmatic metaphysics is a call to engage in a purposive self-creation under a unifying will, a will that possesses the strength to reinterpret history as a pathway to "the problem that we are". Nietzsche agrees with the postmodernists that unity is not a pre-given, however he would disavow their rejection of unity as a goal. Where the postmodernists celebrate "the death of the subject" Nietzsche rejects this valorization of disunity as a form of Nihilism and prescribes the creation of a genuine unified subjectivity to those few capable of such a goal. Postmodernists are nearer Nietzsche's idea of the Last Man than his idea of the Overman.Articl
Develop and test fuel cell powered on-site integrated total energy system
Satisfactory performance is reported for the first 12-cell sub-stack of the 5 kW rebuild using improved ABA reactant distribution plates. Construction and test results are described for the first full-sized single-cell test (0.33 m x 0.56 m). Test duration was 450 hours. Plans are outlined for construction and testing of two methanol reformer units based on commercially-available shell-and-tube heat exchangers. A 5 kW-equivalent precursor and a 50 kW-equivalent prototype will be built. Supporting design and single-tube experimental data are presented. Stack support efforts are summarized on corrosion currents of graphite materials and acid-management of single-cell test facilities. Comparative properties are summarized for the two methanol/steam reforming catalysts evauated under Task V (now completed); T2107RS and C70-2RS
In an open publishing house not so far, far away….
EditorialSUMMARY: As BJPsych Open completes its first circle around the sun and marks its first anniversary, we share with you its strengths and advantages that underpin its success as a new journal. First and foremost, the editorial team has maintained rigorous scientific standards while pursuing an open access publishing model that, by design, accommodates a broad range of clinical and scientific topics. Fundamental to BJPsych Open's mission has been our policy of accepting papers that are both methodologically sound and intellectually stimulating. The calibre of the journal has already been recognised, with recent notification of indexing all its content in PubMed Central. This reflects the quality of submissions and is the result of concerted efforts by the authors, the editorial board, the many selfless reviewers and our dedicated staff in the journal office. We urge you to join us on this exciting journey and look to your input as authors, readers and reviewers to help shape this fledgling enterprise, destined to become a force to be reckoned with.
