    Overcoming Psychologism. Twardowski on Actions and Products

    This paper is about the topic of psychologism in the work of Kazimierz Twardowski and my aim is to revisit this important issue in light of recent publications from, and on Twardowski’s works. I will first examine the genesis of psychologism in the young Twardowski’s work; secondly, I will examine Twardowski’s picture theory of meaning and Husserl’s criticism in Logical Investigations; the third part is about Twardowski’s recognition and criticism of his psychologism in his lectures on the psychology of thinking; the fourth and fifth parts provide an overview of Twardowski’s paper “Actions and Products” while the sixth part addresses the psychologism issue in the last part of this paper through the delineation of psychology and the humanities. I shall conclude this study with a brief assessment of Twardowski’s solution to psychologism

    Formation of diluted III–V nitride thin films by N ion implantation

    iluted III–Nₓ–V₁ˍₓ alloys were successfully synthesized by nitrogen implantation into GaAs,InP, and AlyGa1−yAs. In all three cases the fundamental band-gap energy for the ion beam synthesized III–Nₓ–V₁ˍₓ alloys was found to decrease with increasing N implantation dose in a manner similar to that observed in epitaxially grownGaNₓAs1−x and InNₓP₁ˍₓalloys. In GaNₓAs₁ˍₓ the highest value of x (fraction of “active” substitutional N on As sublattice) achieved was 0.006. It was observed that NAs is thermally unstable at temperatures higher than 850 °C. The highest value of x achieved in InNₓP₁ˍₓ was higher, 0.012, and the NP was found to be stable to at least 850 °C. In addition, the N activation efficiency in implantedInNₓP₁ˍₓ was at least a factor of 2 higher than that in GaNₓAs₁ˍₓ under similar processing conditions. AlyGa1−yNₓAs₁ˍₓ had not been made previously by epitaxial techniques. N implantation was successful in producing AlyGa1−yNₓAs₁ˍₓalloys.     Gauss's law and gauge-invariant operators and states in QCD

    In this work, we prove a previously published conjecture that a prescription we gave for constructing states that implement Gauss's law for `pure glue' QCD is correct. We also construct a unitary transformation that extends this prescription so that it produces additional states that implement Gauss's law for QCD with quarks as well as gluons. Furthermore, we use the mathematical apparatus developed in the course of this work to construct gauge-invariant spinor (quark) and gauge (gluon) field operators. We adapt this SU(3) construction for the SU(2) Yang-Mills case, and we consider the dynamical implications of these developments.Comment: 29 pages, LaTeX, uses REVTe

    Debris disks around Sun-like stars

    We have observed nearly 200 FGK stars at 24 and 70 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We identify excess infrared emission, including a number of cases where the observed flux is more than 10 times brighter than the predicted photospheric flux, and interpret these signatures as evidence of debris disks in those systems. We combine this sample of FGK stars with similar published results to produce a sample of more than 350 main sequence AFGKM stars. The incidence of debris disks is 4.2% (+2.0/-1.1) at 24 microns for a sample of 213 Sun-like (FG) stars and 16.4% (+2.8/-2.9) at 70 microns for 225 Sun-like (FG) stars. We find that the excess rates for A, F, G, and K stars are statistically indistinguishable, but with a suggestion of decreasing excess rate toward the later spectral types; this may be an age effect. The lack of strong trend among FGK stars of comparable ages is surprising, given the factor of 50 change in stellar luminosity across this spectral range.     General Practitioners' Attitudes towards Essential Competencies in End-of-Life Care: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

    Identifying essential competencies in end-of-life care, as well as general practitioners' (GPs) confidence in these competencies, is essential to guide training and quality improvement efforts in this domain. To determine which competencies in end-of-life care are considered important by GPs, to assess GPs' confidence in these competencies in a European context and their reasons to refer terminally ill patients to a specialist. Cross-sectional postal survey involving a stratified random sample of 2000 GPs in Switzerland in 2014. Survey development was informed by a previous qualitative exploration of relevant end-of-life GP competencies. Main outcome measures were GPs' assessment of the importance of and confidence in 18 attributes of end-of-life care competencies, and reasons for transferring care of terminally-ill patients to a specialist. GP characteristics associated with main outcome measures were tested using multivariate regression models. The response rate was 31%. Ninety-nine percent of GPs considered the recognition and treatment of pain as important, 86% felt confident about it. Few GPs felt confident in cultural (16%), spiritual (38%) and legal end-of-life competencies such as responding to patients seeking assisted suicide (35%) although more than half of the respondents regarded these competencies as important. Most frequent reasons to refer terminally ill patients to a specialist were lack of time (30%), better training of specialists (23%) and end-of-life care being incompatible with other duties (19%). In multiple regression analyses, confidence in end-of-life care was positively associated with GPs' age, practice size, home visits and palliative training. GPs considered non-somatic competencies (such as spiritual, cultural, ethical and legal aspects) nearly as important as pain and symptom control. Yet, few GPs felt confident in these non-somatic competencies. These findings should inform training and quality improvement efforts in this domain, in particular for younger, less experienced GPs
