A simple remark on a flat projective morphism with a Calabi-Yau fiber
If a K3 surface is a fiber of a flat projective morphisms over a connected
noetherian scheme over the complex number field, then any smooth connected
fiber is also a K3 surface. Observing this, Professor Nam-Hoon Lee asked if the
same is true for higher dimensional Calabi-Yau fibers. We shall give an
explicit negative answer to his question as well as a proof of his initial

Electric field response of strongly correlated one-dimensional metals: a Bethe-Ansatz density functional theory study
We present a theoretical study on the response properties to an external
electric field of strongly correlated one-dimensional metals. Our investigation
is based on the recently developed Bethe-Ansatz local density approximation
(BALDA) to the density functional theory formulation of the Hubbard model. This
is capable of describing both Luttinger liquid and Mott-insulator correlations.
The BALDA calculated values for the static linear polarizability are compared
with those obtained by numerically accurate methods, such as exact (Lanczos)
diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group, over a broad
range of parameters. In general BALDA linear polarizabilities are in good
agreement with the exact results. The response of the exact exchange and
correlation potential is found to point in the same direction of the perturbing
potential. This is well reproduced by the BALDA approach, although the fine
details depend on the specific parameterization for the local approximation.
Finally we provide a numerical proof for the non-locality of the exact exchange

Usefulness of fair valuation of biological assets for cash flow prediction
This study develops an empirical analysis of the relevance of accounting information when biological assets are measured at fair value. We use an international sample of firms with biological assets.We find that biological assets influence unpredictability when they are measured at historical cost (HC). In this case, the ability of accounting data to predict future cash flows diminishes as the proportion of biological assets on total assets increases. The valuation at fair value (FV) switches this negative influence of biological assets to a positive one. We find that when they are measured at FV, the prediction accuracy of future cash flows improves as the ratio of biological assets to total assets increases. This evidence is robust to differentmeasures of prediction accuracy, as well as to the improvement of accounting standards, regardless of FV, over time. The evidence is weaker for bearer plants
Electron-hole pairs during the adsorption dynamics of O2 on Pd(100) - Exciting or not?
During the exothermic adsorption of molecules at solid surfaces dissipation
of the released energy occurs via the excitation of electronic and phononic
degrees of freedom. For metallic substrates the role of the nonadiabatic
electronic excitation channel has been controversially discussed, as the
absence of a band gap could favour an easy coupling to a manifold of
electronhole pairs of arbitrarily low energies. We analyse this situation for
the highly exothermic showcase system of molecular oxygen dissociating at
Pd(100), using time-dependent perturbation theory applied to first-principles
electronic-structure calculations. For a range of different trajectories of
impinging O2 molecules we compute largely varying electron-hole pair spectra,
which underlines the necessity to consider the high-dimensionality of the
surface dynamical process when assessing the total energy loss into this
dissipation channel. Despite the high Pd density of states at the Fermi level,
the concomitant non-adiabatic energy losses nevertheless never exceed about 5%
of the available chemisorption energy. While this supports an electronically
adiabatic description of the predominant heat dissipation into the phononic
system, we critically discuss the non-adiabatic excitations in the context of
the O2 spin transition during the dissociation process.Comment: 20 pages including 7 figures; related publications can be found at

Anomalous transport properties of the halfmetallic ferromagnets Co2TiSi, Co2TiGe, and Co2TiSn
In this work the theoretical and experimental investigations of Co2TiZ (Z =
Si, Ge, or Sn) compounds are reported. Half-metallic ferromagnetism is
predicted for all three compounds with only two bands crossing the Fermi energy
in the majority channel. The magnetic moments fulfill the Slater-Pauling rule
and the Curie temperatures are well above room temperature. All compounds show
a metallic like resistivity for low temperatures up to their Curie temperature,
above the resistivity changes to semiconducting like behavior. A large negative
magnetoresistance of 55% is observed for Co2TiSn at room temperature in an
applied magnetic field of 4T which is comparable to the large negative
magnetoresistances of the manganites. The Seebeck coefficients are negative for
all three compounds and reach their maximum values at their respective Curie
temperatures and stay almost constant up to 950 K. The highest value achieved
is -52muV/K m for Co2TiSn which is large for a metal. The combination of
half-metallicity and the constant large Seebeck coefficient over a wide
temperature range makes these compounds interesting materials for
thermoelectric applications and further spincaloric investigations.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure
On explicit results at the intersection of the Z_2 and Z_4 orbifold subvarieties in K3 moduli space
We examine the recently found point of intersection between the Z_2 and Z_4
orbifold subvarieties in the K3 moduli space more closely. First we give an
explicit identification of the coordinates of the respective Z_2 and Z_4
orbifold theories at this point. Secondly we construct the explicit
identification of conformal field theories at this point and show the
orthogonality of the two subvarieties.Comment: Latex, 23 page
Cancer Is Associated with Alterations in the Three-Dimensional Organization of the Genome
The human genome is organized into topologically associating domains (TADs), which represent contiguous regions with a higher frequency of intra-interactions as opposed to inter-interactions. TADs contribute to gene expression regulation by restricting the interactions between their regulatory elements, and TAD disruption has been associated with cancer. Here, we provide a proof of principle that mutations within TADs can be used to predict the survival of cancer patients. Specifically, we constructed a set of 1467 consensus TADs representing the three-dimensional organization of the human genome and used Cox regression analysis to identify a total of 35 prognostic TADs in different cancer types. Interestingly, only 46% of the 35 prognostic TADs comprised genes with known clinical relevance. Moreover, in the vast majority of such cases, the prognostic value of the TAD was not directly related to the presence/absence of mutations in the gene(s), emphasizing the importance of regulatory mutations. In addition, we found that 34% of the prognostic TADs show strong structural perturbations in the cancer genome, consistent with the widespread, global epigenetic dysregulation often observed in cancer patients. In summary, this study elucidates the mechanisms through which non-coding variants may influence cancer progression and opens new avenues for personalized medicine
New Long-term Historical Data Recording and Failure Analysis System for the CERN Cryoplants
CERN uses several liquid helium cryoplants (total of 21) for cooling large variety of superconducting devices namely: accelerating cavities, magnets for accelerators and particle detectors. The cryoplants are remotely operated from several control rooms using industrial standard supervision systems, which allows the instant display of all plant data and the trends, over several days, for the most important signals. The monitoring of the cryoplant performance during transient conditions and normal operation over several months asks for a long-term recording of all plant parameters. An historical data recording system has been developed, which collects data from all cryoplants, stores them in a centralized database over a period of one year and allows an user-friendly graphical visualization. In particular, a novel tool was developed for debugging causes of plant failures by comparing selected reference data with the simultaneous evolution of all plant data.
