    Charge states and magnetic ordering in LaMnO3/SrTiO3 superlattices

    We investigated the magnetic and optical properties of [(LaMnO3)n/(SrTiO3)8]20 (n = 1, 2, and 8) superlattices grown by pulsed laser deposition. We found a weak ferromagnetic and semiconducting state developed in all superlattices. An analysis of the optical conductivity showed that the LaMnO3 layers in the superlattices were slightly doped. The amount of doping was almost identical regardless of the LaMnO3 layer thickness up to eight unit cells, suggesting that the effect is not limited to the interface. On the other hand, the magnetic ordering became less stable as the LaMnO3 layer thickness decreased, probably due to a dimensional effect.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Electronic structure and anomalous band-edge absorption feature in multiferroic MnWO4: An optical spectroscopic study

    We investigated the electronic structure and lattice dynamics of multiferroic MnWO4 by optical spectroscopy. With variation of polarization, temperature, and magnetic field, we obtained optical responses over a wide range of photon energies. The electronic structure of MnWO4 near to the Fermi level was examined, with inter-band transitions identified in optical conductivity spectra above a band-gap of 2.5 eV. As for the lattice dynamics, we identified all the infrared transverse optical phonon modes available according to the group-theory analysis. Although we did not observe much change in global electronic structure across the phase transition temperatures, an optical absorption at around 2.2 eV showed an evident change depending upon the spin configuration and magnetic field. The behavior of this band-edge absorption indicates that spin-orbit coupling plays an important role in multiferroic MnWO4.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review B. 19 pages including 6 figure

    Tumor suppressive role of sestrin2 during colitis and colon carcinogenesis

    The mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathways are critical regulators of intestinal inflammation and colon cancer growth. Sestrins are stress-inducible proteins, which suppress both mTORC1 and ER stress; however, the role of Sestrins in colon physiology and tumorigenesis has been elusive due to the lack of studies in human tissues or in appropriate animal models. In this study, we show that human SESN2 expression is elevated in the colon of ulcerative colitis patients but is lost upon p53 inactivation during colon carcinogenesis. In mouse colon, Sestrin2 was critical for limiting ER stress and promoting the recovery of epithelial cells after inflammatory injury. During colitis-promoted tumorigenesis, Sestrin2 was shown to be an important mediator of p53’s control over mTORC1 signaling and tumor cell growth. These results highlight Sestrin2 as a novel tumor suppressor, whose downregulation can accelerate both colitis and colon carcinogenesis

    Pharmacokinetic study of meropenem in healthy beagle dogs receiving intermittent hemodialysis

    Meropenem, a second carbapenem antimicrobial agent with a broad spectrum of activity, is used to treat sepsis and resistant-bacterial infections in veterinary medicine. The objective of this study was to identify the pharmacokinetics of meropenem in dogs receiving intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) and to determine the proper dosing in renal failure patients receiving IHD. Five healthy beagle dogs were given a single i.v. dose of 24 mg/kg of meropenem and received IHD. The blood flow rate, dialysate flow, and ultrafiltration rate were maintained at 40 mL/min, 300 mL/min, and 40 mL/h, respectively. Blood samples were collected for 24 h from the jugular vein and from the extracorporeal arterial and venous line. Urine samples and dialysate were also collected. The concentrations of meropenem were assayed using HPLC/MS/MS determination. The peak plasma concentration was 116 +/- 37 mu g/mL at 15 min. The systemic clearance was 347 +/- 117 mL/h/kg, and the steady-state volume of distribution was 223 +/- 67 mL/kg. Dialysis clearance was 71.1 +/- 34.3 mL/h/kg, and the extraction ratio by hemodialysis was 0.455 +/- 0.150. The half-life (T-1/2) in dogs with IHD decreased compared with those without IHD, and the reduction in T1/2 was greater in renal failure patients than in normal patients. Sixty-nine percent and 21% of the administered drug were recovered by urine and dialysate in the unchanged form, respectively.
