Biological productivity of the Indian Ocean

    Get PDF
India has a long coast line of nearly 6,000 km with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Laccadive Archipelago lying beyond her shores. The geographical position of India with the peninsular portion extending deep into the central part of the Indian Ocean gives her a locational advantage in marine fishing activities. At present though India contributes about 4096 of the fish landings of the Indian Ocean, when viewed against the world production of 76 million tannes oJ marine fish, her share is only 1.6 million tonnes represent ing less than 2%

Productivity of the seas around Lakshadweep

    Get PDF
The seas around the Lakshadweep and the reef lagoons are of great ecological significance as they influence the fauna and flora associated with the coral reefs and the high sea resources to a great extent. The waters have been found to be highly productive at the primary and secondary levels. The paper detailed about the productivity of the seas around Lakshadweep

Application of LANDSAT MSS data in ocean colour sensing

    Get PDF
Landsat MSS data off Cochin Coast was analysed ond on attempt made to look in to the relationship between MSS gray values and concentration of pigment/particulate matter. MSS band 4 and 5 showed the maximum gray value range as compared to band 6 and 7. A density sliced image of band 4 was generated in the form of Q color coded image showing the gray levels corresponding to various pigment levels

Oceanographic parameters and their relationship to fish catch estimation: a case study in coastal waters north of Cochin during 1981

Coastal waters in the North of Cochin was selected for the present study. This area is well known for the occurrence and abundance of fish schools of oil sardine (Sardinella Iongiceps) and mackerel (Rastrelliger Kanagurta) allowing the period after SW monsoon in the Indian Ocea

Remote sensing of ocean colour and targeting of fish schools from airborne sensors

Studying the well known pelagic school of oil sardine and mackerel in the Arabian sea of the Indian Ocean. A high productivity is reported in the oceanic waters of Cochin preceding SW monsoon. A remote sensing experiment was carried out in the oceanic waters over North of Cochin coast involving vessel-based sea truth data collection synchronous to aircraft overflights during October, November and December 1981

Validation of Landsat Thematic Mapper-derived phytoplankton pigments through synchronous surface measurements: area off Calicut to Azhikal in the Arabian Sea

    Get PDF
This paper deals with an estimation of phytoplankton pigments from Landsat Thematic Mapper (Tivi) data after removal of atmospheric effect. The pigments derived from Landsat TIV1 data of October, 1986 and March, 1987 have been compared with corresponding surface values measured during ship cruise programmes synchronous to satellite overpass. In-water algorithm for Landsat TM bands was developed from the sea data collected off Quilon to Malpe In the Arabian sea at different periods of the year. A uniform bias towards underestimation of pigments has been observed in the case of October data and an appropriate modification In the pigment algorithm for Landsat TM has bnen suggested

    Withanolides and related steroids

    Get PDF
Since the isolation of the first withanolides in the mid-1960s, over 600 new members of this group of compounds have been described, with most from genera of the plant family Solanaceae. The basic structure of withaferin A, a C28 ergostane with a modified side chain forming a δ-lactone between carbons 22 and 26, was considered for many years the basic template for the withanolides. Nowadays, a considerable number of related structures are also considered part of the withanolide class; among them are those containing γ-lactones in the side chain that have come to be at least as common as the δ-lactones. The reduced versions (γ and δ-lactols) are also known. Further structural variations include modified skeletons (including C27 compounds), aromatic rings and additional rings, which may coexist in a single plant species. Seasonal and geographical variations have also been described in the concentration levels and types of withanolides that may occur, especially in the Jaborosa and Salpichroa genera, and biogenetic relationships among those withanolides may be inferred from the structural variations detected. Withania is the parent genus of the withanolides and a special section is devoted to the new structures isolated from species in this genus. Following this, all other new structures are grouped by structural types. Many withanolides have shown a variety of interesting biological activities ranging from antitumor, cytotoxic and potential cancer chemopreventive effects, to feeding deterrence for several insects as well as selective phytotoxicity towards monocotyledoneous and dicotyledoneous species. Trypanocidal, leishmanicidal, antibacterial, and antifungal activities have also been reported. A comprehensive description of the different activities and their significance has been included in this chapter. The final section is devoted to chemotaxonomic implications of withanolide distribution within the Solanaceae. Overall, this chapter covers the advances in the chemistry and biology of withanolides over the last 16 years.Fil: Misico, Rosana Isabel. Universidad de Buenos Aires.
