Means for growing ribbon crystals without subjecting the crystals to thermal shock-induced strains

A susceptor particularly suited for use in growing a ribbon crystal employing edge defined film fed growth techniques is described. The susceptor includes a die through which a melt is drawn for forming a crystal ribbon. This is combined with a coolant delivery system characterized by a pair of jets for directing a stream of fluid coolant along a path extended to impinge on the susceptor in close proximity with the die in nonincident relation with the crystal being grown

The Same but Different—Researching Language and Culture in the Lives of Polish People in England

This article is concerned with issues of representation within cross language research. We examine research that suggests people may present themselves differently in different languages. Moreover, it has been argued that translators/researchers produce accounts of people's lives rather than just describe them within their translations. These representational moves by both research participants and researchers across languages have consequences for research findings. We illustrate our arguments in relation to research with Polish speakers in Greater Manchester, England and argue for issues of interpretation and translation within narrative research to move out of methodological notes to become central concerns within research processes. We argue particularly against the treatment of language as an undifferentiated medium and the view that anyone who can speak a language can unproblematically represent all speakers of that language. Does Beta-Carotene Prevent Cancer? A Critical Appraisal

The possible role of beta-carotene as a protective nutrient against cancer is reviewed. Human prospective and retrospective studies strongly indicate that beta-carotene protects against lung cancer and probably against stomach cancer. It may also be protective against cancer of the ovary, cervix, breast and other cancers, but not the colon or rectum. The protective factor appears to be beta-carotene itself, rather than total vitamin A.. Experiments using a variety of animal models also show that beta-carotene is anticarcinogenic and appears to act at several stages of the process. Possible mechanisms of action are discussed, namely that it must first be converted to vitamin A, that it alters carcinogen metabolism, that it is an anti-oxidant and that it enhances the immune defenses

Raman signatures of classical and quantum phases in coupled dots: A theoretical prediction

We study electron molecules in realistic vertically coupled quantum dots in a strong magnetic field. Computing the energy spectrum, pair correlation functions, and dynamical form factor as a function of inter-dot coupling via diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian, we identify structural transitions between different phases, some of which do not have a classical counterpart.
