    A Meta-Ethnographic Review of Paid Staff and Volunteers Working together in Palliative Care

    Context Volunteers in palliative care settings are an essential part of care provision for patients and those important to them. Effective collaboration between volunteers and paid staff has been regarded as an important element of successful working, however, at times failures in coordination, information sharing and tensions within teams have been highlighted. Objectives To explore the views expressed by volunteers and paid staff about their experiences of working together in palliative care settings. Methods A systematic exploration of qualitative research using a meta-ethnographic approach. PsycINFO, CINAHL, Medline Complete, and AMED databases were searched from inception to December 2021 for the concepts “volunteers” and “palliative care.” Repeated in-depth reading and appraisal of papers identified metaphors and concepts, providing new interpretations. Results Included papers (n = 14) enabled the construction of five storylines: 1) “we are the cake, and they are the cream”: understanding the volunteer role—separate, but part of a whole. 2) “…we don't know what's wrong with people but sometimes we need to know”: access to information and importance of trust. 3) “everybody looks out for each other”: access to paid staff and their support. 4) “...we don't meddle in the medical”: boundaries. 5) "it's the small things that the staff does for me that makes me feel good about my work": sense of value and significance. Conclusions For effective working relationships between paid staff and volunteers, proactive engagement, recognition of each other's role and contribution, mutual sharing of information, and intentional interaction between both groups is needed

    Means of transportation affects the physical qualities of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus [Thunb]) fruit within the Tamale Metropolis in the Northern Region of Ghana

    The high perishable nature of fruits and vegetables in the agricultural sector is a major concern to scientists and the various stakeholders along the value chain. Postharvest handling practices and transportation systems are some of the factors responsible for some postharvest losses. This study therefore sought to identify the various means of transport used by traders and also to assess the kinds of mechanical damage that confront watermelon fruits during transportation within the Metropolis. Field survey collected information on handling practices and the means of transportation. It revealed that the means of transport used by watermelon traders included Kia mini truck (0.80 t), Motor King (Tricycle) (0.45 t) Kia mini truck (1.5 t) and Mini Pickup truck (1.00 t). It was also observed that majority (35%) of watermelon traders used Kia mini truck while Mini Pickup truck was the least used (15%). It further revealed that Motor King (0.45 t) recorded the highest percentage of cracks (0.08%) while Kia mini truck (1.5 t) had the least (0.03%).  Additionally, Kia mini truck (0.80 t) had the highest percentage of bruises (0.14%) while Kia mini truck (1.5 t) had the least (0.53%).     Decentralised strategy setting and action planning for environmental sanitation in Ghana

    This paper shares the experience in the preparatory activities carried out for the preparation of a National Environmental Sanitation Strategy and Action Plan for Ghana. The procedures and framework for preparing the comprehensive strategy and action plan are described including national, regional and district-level management and quality assurance of the process. This initiative is different from the usual sanitation limited to “hygienic disposal of human excreta” as the strategies and related action planning elements cover all aspects of environmental sanitation including solid waste, human excreta, sullage conveyance and drainage, environmental sanitation education and enforcement management. An important proposition of exercise is that where effective collaboration, sharing and peering can be forged amongst sector institutions and coordinated well it is possible to bring diverse expertise at national level to tackle each and every issue of environmental sanitation adequately

    An Assessment of Institutional Importance of Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta River Basin of Northern Ghana

    Climate change affects a lot of sectors including agriculture. Several measures are being adopted to avert the impacts associated with it. Water resources in semi-arid areas are not excluded. The study, conducted in Lawra District of Upper West region of Ghana was undertaken to identify and assess the adaptation strategies adopted by settlers along and in the Volta River Basin as well as to analyse the level of agreements among the institutions that are helping farmers to adapt to climate change impacts. This study used a mixed method including focus group discussion and a semi-structured questionnaire to obtain information from 160 farming households in 8 randomly selected communities in the Lawra district. Results revealed three classes of adaptation strategies which include environmental, cultural/agronomic and economic strategies. Majority (65%) of the settlers adopted the environmental practices, whiles 52% of the respondents also adopted the cultural/agronomic practices and less than half of the respondents (31%) adopted the economic practices. We viewed that adoption levels, though more than half of the respondents adopted the environmental and cultural strategies, are still not encouraging given the magnitude of interventions related to water management. The results also reveal that community watchdogs, climate change, agriculture and food security platforms and non-governmental organisations are the three most important institutions working to improve farmer resilience to climate change. Therefore the results could restimulate policy implementation with the overall aim of increasing adoption levels of the strategies. Only when this is done, will a significant step have been taken towards saving our water resources from climate change impacts

    Identification of stingless bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Kenya using Morphometrics and DNA barcoding

    Stingless bees are important pollinators of wild plants and crops. The identity of stingless bee species in Africa has not been fully documented. The present study explored the utility of morphometrics and DNA barcoding for identification of African stingless bee populations, and to further employ these tools to identify potential cryptic variation within species. Stingless bee samples were collected from three ecological zones, namely Kakamega Forest, Mwingi and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, which are geographically distant and cover high, medium and low altitudes, respectively. Forewing and hind leg morphometric characters were measured to determine the extent of morphological variation between the populations. DNA barcodes were generated from the mitochondrial cytochrome c-oxidase I (COI) gene. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on the morphometric measurements separated the bee samples into three clusters: (1) Meliponula bocandei; (2) Meliponula lendliana + Plebeina hildebrandti; (3) Dactylurina schmidti + Meliponula ferruginea black + Meliponula ferruginea reddish brown, but Canonical Variate Analysis (CVA) separated all the species except the two morphospecies (M. ferruginea reddish brown and black). The analysis of the COI sequences showed that DNA barcoding can be used to identify all the species studied and revealed remarkable genetic distance (7.3%) between the two M. ferruginea morphs. This is the first genetic evidence that M. ferruginea black and M. ferruginea reddish brown are separate species

    Geochemical Characteristics of Granitoids (Ho Gneiss) from the Pan – African Dahomeyide Belt, Southeastern, Ghana: Implications for Petrogenesis and Tectonic Setting

    The Pan-African Dahomeyide belt exposed in Southeastern, Ghana, consist of granitoid gneisses locally known as Ho gneiss. These rocks are thought to be part of the West African Craton (WAC) which was reworked during the Pan-African Orogeny, and may be time equivalent with the Kara gneisses. Petrographical and whole rock geochemical analyses have been used to evaluate the characteristics, petrogenesis and mode of emplacement of the granitoids. The new data reasonably suggest that the Ho gneiss consist mainly of biotite augen gneisses of both mafic and felsic rock suites. Geochemically, these rocks show tonalitic to quartz monzonite but mainly granodiorites affinities. They are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous, I-type, magnesian to ferroan and calcic to alkali calcic. With these varying features, the granitoids mimic mantle derived magma source which mixed or mingled with crustally derived melt. The rocks display varying REEs and trace elements patterns but, their LREEs and LILE enrichment with  the noticeable enrichment in Rb, Ba, K and especially Pb and negative Ti, Ta, Nb observed among majority of the samples are typical signature of ‘‘arc rocks’’ or continental crustal materials. Their incompatible trace element ratios, such as Th/U (1.07 – 13.87), K/Rb (272 – 574.47), Th/Yb (0.79 – 15.09), Ta/Yb (0.25 -0.64 ), Ce/Pb (mainly 1.62 – 7.88 ) and high Ba/Nb (19.55 – 314.17, with TA = 1565.00), are similar to those of the continental crust. The rocks are characterised by subduction related Sr/Y content (< 100), except sample MA8 that shows high concentration of Sr/Y (227.71). The magnesian affinity reflects relatively hydrous, oxidizing source which is consistent with origins that are broadly subduction related. Their high – K nature also points to an important petrogenetic role of remelting and differentiation of arc – accretionary complex crust. These geochemical signatures are likely to be related to metasomatism of the sub – continental lithospheric mantle via crustal recycling. In conclusion, the granitoids may have from melting of igneous source in a subduction related environment.
