    Electrostatic deflector studies using small prototypes

    The search for electric dipole moments of particles in storage rings requires the development of dedicated deflector elements with electrostatic fields. In these rings, electric deflectors shall be used as bending elements for the charged particles. This paper presents studies on scaled-down prototypes, a few cm in size, to investigate different deflector materials at similar electric fields but much smaller distances than real size prototypes.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figure

    Hydrogen Spectroscopy with a Lamb-shift Polarimeter - An Alternative Approach Towards Anti-Hydrogen Spectroscopy Experiments

    A Lamb-shift polarimeter, which has been built for a fast determination of the polarization of protons and deuterons of an atomic-beam source and which is frequently used in the ANKE experiment at COSY-J\"ulich, is shown to be an excellent device for atomic-spectroscopy measurements of metastable hydrogen isotopes. It is demonstrated that magnetic and electric dipole transitions in hydrogen can be measured as a function of the external magnetic field, giving access to the full Breit-Rabi diagram for the 22S1/22^2S_{1/2} and the 22P1/22^2P_{1/2} states. This will allow the study of hyperfine structure, gg factors and the classical Lamb shift. Although the data are not yet competitive with state-of-the-art measurements, the potential of the method is enormous, including a possible application to anti-hydrogen spectroscopy.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, accepted by European Physical Journal

    A method to polarise antiprotons in storage rings and create polarised antineutrons

    An intense circularely polarised photon beam interacts with a cooled antiproton beam in a storage ring. Due to spin dependent absorption cross sections for the reaction gamma+antiproton > pi- + antineutron a built-up of polarisation of the stored antiprotons takes place. Figures-of-merit around 0.1 can be reached in principle over a wide range of antiproton energies. In this process antineutrons with Polarisation > 70% emerge. The method is presented for the case of 300 MeV/c cooled antiproton beam

    How to measure the parity of the Θ+\Theta^+ in p⃗p⃗\vec p\vec p collisions

    Triggered by a recent paper by Thomas, Hicks and Hosaka, we investigate which observables can be used to determine the parity of the Θ+\Theta^+ from the reaction p⃗p⃗→Σ+Θ+\vec p\vec p \to \Sigma^+\Theta^+ near its production threshold. In particular, we show that the sign of the spin correlation coefficient AxxA_{xx} for small excess energies yields the negative of the parity of the Θ+\Theta^+. The argument relies solely on the Pauli principle and parity conservation and is therefore model--independent.Comment: References completed, discussion on possible influence of background added; conclusions unchange

    A surprising method for polarising antiprotons

    We propose a method for polarising antiprotons in a storage ring by means of a polarised positron beam moving parallel to the antiprotons. If the relative velocity is adjusted to v/c≈0.002v/c \approx 0.002 the cross section for spin-flip is as large as about 2⋅10132 \cdot 10^{13} barn as shown by new QED-calculations of the triple spin-cross sections. Two possibilities for providing a positron source with sufficient flux density are presented. A polarised positron beam with a polarisation of 0.70 and a flux density of approximately 1.5⋅10101.5 \cdot 10^{10}/(mm2^2 s) appears to be feasible by means of a radioactive 11^{11}C dc-source. A more involved proposal is the production of polarised positrons by pair production with circularly polarised photons. It yields a polarisation of 0.76 and requires the injection into a small storage ring. Such polariser sources can be used at low (100 MeV) as well as at high (1 GeV) energy storage rings providing a time of about one hour for polarisation build-up of about 101010^{10} antiprotons to a polarisation of about 0.18.     The PINTEX facility at the IUCF Cooler ring, dedicated to the study of spin dependence in nucleon-nucleon interactions, has been used to measure polarization observables of the reaction pp -> pp pi0 at beam energies between 325 and 400 MeV. The stored polarized proton beam had spin projections both in the longitudinal and the transverse directions with respect to the beam momentum. We report here on the measurements of the relative transverse and longitudinal spin-dependent cross sections, deltasigma_T/sigma_tot and deltasigma_L/sigma_tot, and how from these observables the initial spin singlet and triplet cross sections are obtained. Considering angular momentum states less or equal to one, the contribution of the Ps partial waves to the cross section can be extracted.Comment: Contribution to PANIC99, XVth Particles and Nuclei International Conference, June 10-16, 1999, Uppsala, Sweden.     Measurement of Partial-Wave Contributions in pp --> pp pi^0

    We report a measurement of the spin-dependent total cross section ratios delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot and delta_sigma_L/sigma_tot of the pp --> pp pi^0 reaction between 325 MeV and 400 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a polarized internal target in a storage ring. Non-vertical beam polarization was obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, the knowledge of both spin-dependent total cross sections is sufficient to deduce the strength of certain participating partial waves, free of any model.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Heavy Meson Production in NN Collisions with Polarized Beam and Target -- A new facility for COSY

    The study of near--threshold meson production in pp and pd collisions involving polarized beams and polarized targets offers the rare opportunity to gain insight into short--range features of the nucleon--nucleon interaction. The Cooler Synchrotron COSY at FZ--J\"ulich is a unique environment to perform such studies. Measurements of polarization observables require a cylindrically symmetrical detector, capable to measure the momenta and the directions of outgoing charged hadrons. The wide energy range of COSY leads to momenta of outgoing protons to be detected in a single meson production reaction between 300 and 2500 MeV/c. Scattering angles of protons to be covered extend to about 45∘45^{\circ} in the laboratory system. An azimuthal angular coverage of the device around 98% seems technically achievable.     The Polarized H and D Atomic Beam Source for ANKE at COSY-J\"ulich

    A polarized atomic beam source was developed for the polarized internal storage-cell gas target at the magnet spectrometer ANKE of COSY-J\"ulich. The intensities of the beams injected into the storage cell, measured with a compression tube, are 7.5⋅10167.5\cdot 10^{16} hydrogen atoms/s (two hyperfine states) and 3.9⋅10163.9\cdot 10^{16} deuterium atoms/s (three hyperfine states). For the hydrogen beam the achieved vector polarizations are pz≈±0.92p_{\rm z}\approx\pm0.92. For the deuterium beam, the obtained combinations of vector and tensor (pzzp_{\rm zz}) polarizations are pz≈±0.90p_{\rm z}\approx\pm 0.90 (with a constant pzz≈+0.86p_{\rm zz}\approx +0.86), and pzz=+0.90p_{\rm zz}=+0.90 or pzz=−1.71p_{\rm zz}=-1.71 (both with vanishing pzp_{\rm z}).
