Lamotrigine treatment of aggression in female borderline patients, Part II: an 18-month follow-up
Borderline patients often display pathological aggression. We previously tested lamotrigine, an anti-convulsant, in therapy for aggression in women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) (J Psychopharmacol 2005; 19: 287–291), and found significant changes on most scales of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI) after eight weeks. To assess the longerterm efficacy of lamotrigine in therapy for aggression in women with BPD, this 18-month follow-up observation was carried out, in which patients (treated with lamotrigine: n = 18; former placebo group: n = 9) were tested every six months. According to the intent-to-treat principle, significant changes on all scales of the STAXI were observed in the lamotrigine-treated subjects. All subjects tolerated lamotrigine relatively well. Lamotrigine appears to be an effective and relatively safe agent in the longer-term treatment of aggression in women with BPD
Zonal flows and long-distance correlations during the formation of the edge shear layer in the TJ-II stellarator
A theoretical interpretation is given for the observed long-distance
correlations in potential fluctuations in TJ-II. The value of the correlation
increases above the critical point of the transition for the emergence of the
plasma edge shear flow layer. Mean (i.e. surface averaged, zero-frequency)
sheared flows cannot account for the experimental results. A model consisting
of four envelope equations for the fluctuation level, the mean flow shear, the
zonal flow amplitude shear, and the averaged pressure gradient is proposed. It
is shown that the presence of zonal flows is essential to reproduce the main
features of the experimental observations.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Suivi du premier cas d'infection à Mycobacterium ulcerans confirmé par culture, PCR et génotypage en République du Congo-Brazzaville
This article presents follow-up data from the first patient in whom Mycobacterium ulcerans infection (MUI) was documented by PCR, genotyping and culture in the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville. Findings show the importance of regular clinical and microbiological evaluation for the disseminated form of the disease. The patient was probably infected in Pointe Noire where MUI has been described but never documented. Culture of specimens collected before antibiotic treatment showed that the bacterium was sensitive to the antibiotics being administered (streptomycin and rifampin) and was identical to isolates from Atlantic-coast regions of West Africa where MUI is endemic. The patient was treated with streptomycin and rifampin for 12 weeks in association with surgery. During treatment clinical examination was performed every day and microbiological analysis every two weeks. The duration of follow-up from the end of specific antibiotic treatment was 26 months. Medical treatment failed to prevent bone involvement and fistulae that were treated by surgery. However medical treatment may have limited dissemination of the disease. Serial microbiological evaluation was useful to detect bone involvement in this patient, but persistent positive gene amplification is not a proof of active disease. This study confirms that MUI is still endemic in the region of Pointe Noire. This finding underlines the need to optimize epidemiologic surveillance, laboratory diagnostic capabilities, and therapeutic management in the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville
Squeezed States of the Generalized Minimum Uncertainty State for the Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian
We show that the ground state of the well-known pseudo-stationary states for
the Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian is a generalized minimum uncertainty state,
which has the minimum allowed uncertainty , where is a constant depending on the damping
factor and natural frequency. The most general symmetric Gaussian states are
obtained as the one-parameter squeezed states of the pseudo-stationary ground
state. It is further shown that the coherent states of the pseudo-stationary
ground state constitute another class of the generalized minimum uncertainty
states.Comment: RevTex4, 9 pages, no fingure; to be published in Journal of Physics
Chromosome identification in the Andean common bean accession G19833 (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Fabaceae)
Characterization of all chromosomes of the Andean G19833 bean genotype was carried out by fluorescent in situ hybridization. Eleven single-copy genomic sequences, one for each chromosome, two BACs containing subtelomeric and pericentromeric repeats and the 5S and 45S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were used as probes. Comparison to the Mesoamerican accession BAT93 showed little divergence, except for additional 45S rDNA sites in four chromosome pairs. Altogether, the results indicated a relative karyotypic stability during the evolution of the Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools of P. vulgaris
Exact exchange-correlation potential for a time-dependent two electron system
We obtain an exact solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for a
two-electron system confined to a plane by an isotropic parabolic potential
whose curvature is periodically modulated in time. From this solution we
compute the exact time-dependent exchange correlation potential v_xc which
enters the Kohn-Sham equation of time-dependent density functional theory. Our
exact result provides a benchmark against which various approximate forms for
v_xc can be compared. Finally v_xc is separated in an adiabatic and a pure
dynamical part and it is shown that, for the particular system studied, the
dynamical part is negligible.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
