    Genralized Robustness of Entanglement

    The robustness of entanglement results of Vidal and Tarrach considered the problem whereby an entangled state is mixed with a separable state so that the overall state becomes non-entangled. In general it is known that there are also cases when entangled states are mixed with other entangled states and where the sum is separable. In this paper, we treat the more general case where entangled states can be mixed with any states so that the resulting mixture is unentangled. It is found that entangled pure states for this generalized case have the same robustness as the restricted case of Vidal and Tarrach.Comment: Final version.     BALTA Mapping Workplan - 2007-2008

    A two step or two phase BALTA mapping process was identified in Vancouver in January 2007. The various timetable components of the proposed mapping and survey work April 2007 to March 2008 are laid out below. Phase 1 (April to September) Includes a wide range of work including: Short survey design for SE organizations and another short survey tool for intermediate organizations; Meeting of core team to develop draft questionnaire. Development of an information package for potential interviewees that explains the BALTA Project and our reasons for mapping the sector; Creation of a ‘Researcher Handbook” for future student researchers working on mapping; An online survey software review and a decision on same (this may involve some computing support from Athabasca University if we use PHP Surveyor, or on our own with Survey Monkey- Note AU has confirmed that they support PHP Surveyor and that we may use it); Web design for the online survey tool (including help features etc.); A field test of the online survey and software. Note: also we plan to share BALTA survey design with other nodes in order to ask for and incorporate feedback before we go live.     A Slowly Precessing Disk in the Nucleus of M31 as the Feeding Mechanism for a Central Starburst

    We present a kinematic study of the nuclear stellar disk in M31 at infrared wavelengths using high spatial resolution integral field spectroscopy. The spatial resolution achieved, FWHM = 0."12 (0.45 pc at the distance of M31), has only previously been equaled in spectroscopic studies by space-based long-slit observations. Using adaptive optics-corrected integral field spectroscopy from the OSIRIS instrument at the W. M. Keck Observatory, we map the line-of-sight kinematics over the entire old stellar eccentric disk orbiting the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at a distance of r<4 pc. The peak velocity dispersion is 381+/-55 km/s , offset by 0.13 +/- 0.03 from the SMBH, consistent with previous high-resolution long-slit observations. There is a lack of near-infrared (NIR) emission at the position of the SMBH and young nuclear cluster, suggesting a spatial separation between the young and old stellar populations within the nucleus. We compare the observed kinematics with dynamical models from Peiris & Tremaine (2003). The best-fit disk orientation to the NIR flux is [θl\theta_l, θi\theta_i, θa\theta_a] = [-33 +/- 4^{\circ}, 44 +/- 2^{\circ}, -15 +/- 15^{\circ}], which is tilted with respect to both the larger-scale galactic disk and the best-fit orientation derived from optical observations. The precession rate of the old disk is ΩP\Omega_P = 0.0 +/- 3.9 km/s/pc, lower than the majority of previous observations. This slow precession rate suggests that stellar winds from the disk will collide and shock, driving rapid gas inflows and fueling an episodic central starburst as suggested in Chang et al.     Ground Reaction Forces Generated by Twenty-eight Hatha Yoga Postures

    Int J Exerc Sci 5(2) : 114-126, 2012. Adherents claim many benefits from the practice of yoga, including promotion of bone health and prevention of osteoporosis. However, no known studies have investigated whether yoga enhances bone mineral density. Furthermore, none have estimated reaction forces applied by yoga practitioners. The purpose of this study was to collect ground reaction force (GRF) data on a variety of hatha yoga postures that would commonly be practiced in fitness centers or private studios. Twelve female and eight male volunteers performed a sequence of 28 hatha yoga postures while GRF data were collected with an AMTI strain-gauge force platform. The sequence was repeated six times by each study subject. Four dependent variables were studied: peak vertical GRF, mean vertical GRF, peak resultant GRF, and mean resultant GRF. Univariate analysis was used to identify mean values and standard deviations for the dependent variables. Peak vertical and resultant values of each posture were similar for all subjects, and standard deviations were small. Similarly, mean vertical and resultant values were similar for all subjects. This 28 posture yoga sequence produced low impact GRF applied to upper and lower extremities. Further research is warranted to determine whether these forces are sufficient to promote osteogenesis or maintain current bone health in yoga practitioners

    Measurement of a Sign-Changing Two-Gap Superconducting Phase in Electron-Doped Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 Single Crystals using Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

    Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of Ba(Fe1xCox)2As2Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 (x = 0.06, 0.12) single crystals reveal direct evidence for predominantly two-gap superconductivity. These gaps decrease with increasing temperature and vanish above the superconducting transition TcT_c. The two-gap nature and the slightly doping- and energy-dependent quasiparticle scattering interferences near the wave-vectors (±π,0)(\pm \pi, 0) and (0,±π)(0, \pm \pi) are consistent with sign-changing ss-wave superconductivity. The excess zero-bias conductance and the large gap-to-TcT_c ratios suggest dominant unitary impurity scattering.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Paper accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters.     Teachers' responses to the emotional needs of children and young people. Results from the Scottish Needs Assessment Programme

    The Scottish Needs Assessment Programme (SNAP) was established in 2000 to advise the Scottish Government on the emotional health of the country's children and young people. The second phase, conducted in 2002-2003, involved surveying professionals who provide specialist mental health services to children and young people, and also those who work with children and young people in a variety of settings but whose training is not in mental health. Based on the survey, this paper outlines the emotional difficulties faced by children and young people in educational settings, and describes how teachers in particular are responding to these difficulties. It also discusses teachers' experiences of working with other professionals and agencies, in particular the frustrations they feel in their efforts to make suitable arrangements on behalf of young people

    Mobile radio interferometric geodetic systems

    Operation of the Astronomical Radio Interferometric Earth Surveying (ARIES) in a proof of concept mode is discussed. Accuracy demonstrations over a short baseline, a 180 km baseline, and a 380 km baseline are documented. Use of ARIES in the Sea Slope Experiment of the National Geodetic Survey to study the apparent differences between oceanographic and geodetic leveling determinations of the sea surface along the Pacific Coast is described. Intergration of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System and a concept called SERIES (Satellite Emission Radio Interferometric Earth Surveying) is briefly reviewed
