    Hyper-Kähler fibrations and Hilbert schemes

It is known that the fibers are abelian varieties and the base is P2. We assume that the general fiber is isomorphic to a product of two elliptic curves. We are able to relate this class of hyper-Kähler fibrations to already known examples. We prove that such a hyper-Kähler manifold is deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface.by Ljudmila K. Kamenova.Ph.D

    Congenital anomalies in newborns to women employed in jobs with frequent exposure to organic solvents - a register-based prospective study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The foetal effects of occupational exposure to organic solvents in pregnancy are still unclear. Our aim was to study the risk of non-chromosomal congenital anomalies at birth in a well-defined population of singletons born to women employed as painters and spoolers in early pregnancy, compared to women in non-hazardous occupations.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>The study population for this prospective cohort study was singleton newborns delivered to working mothers in the industrial community of Mončegorsk in the period 1973-2005. Occupational information and characteristics of the women and their newborns was obtained from the local population-based birth register.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 597 women employed as painters, painter-plasterers or spoolers had 712 singleton births, whereof 31 (4.4%) were perinatally diagnosed with 37 malformations. Among the 10 561 newborns in the group classified as non-exposed, 397 (3.9%) had one or more malformations. The overall prevalence in the exposed group was 520/10 000 births [95% confidence limits (CL): 476, 564], and 436/10 000 births (95% CL: 396, 476) in the unexposed. Adjusted for young maternal age, smoking during pregnancy, maternal congenital malformation and year of birth, the odds ratio (OR) was 1.24 (95% CL: 0.85, 1.82); for multiple anomalies it was 1.54 (95% CL: 0.66, 3.59).</p> <p>The largest organ-system specific difference in prevalence between the two groups was observed for malformations of the circulatory system: 112/10 000 (95% CL: 35, 190) in the exposed group, and 42/10 000 (95% CL: 29, 54) in the unexposed, with an adjusted OR of 2.03 (95% CL: 0.85, 4.84). The adjusted ORs for malformations of the genital organs and musculoskeletal system were 2.24 (95% CI: 0.95, 5.31) and 1.12 (95% CI: (0.62, 2.02), respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There appeared to be a higher risk of malformations of the circulatory system and genital organs at birth among newborns to women in occupations with organic solvent exposure during early pregnancy (predominantly employed as painters). However, the findings were not statistically conclusive. Considering that these two categories of malformations are not readily diagnosed perinatally, the difference in prevalence between the exposed and unexposed may have been underestimated.</p

    Photoacclimation in Dunaliella tertiolecta reveals a unique NPQ pattern upon exposure to irradiance

    Highly time-resolved photoacclimation patterns of the chlorophyte microalga Dunaliella tertiolecta during exposure to an off–on–off (block) light pattern of saturating photon flux, and to a regime of consecutive increasing light intensities are presented. Non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) mechanisms unexpectedly responded with an initial decrease during dark–light transitions. NPQ values started to rise after light exposure of approximately 4 min. State-transitions, measured as a change of PSII:PSI fluorescence emission at 77 K, did not contribute to early NPQ oscillations. Addition of the uncoupler CCCP, however, caused a rapid increase in fluorescence and showed the significance of qE for NPQ. Partitioning of the quantum efficiencies showed that constitutive NPQ was (a) higher than qE-driven NPQ and (b) responded to light treatment within seconds, suggesting an active role of constitutive NPQ in variable energy dissipation, although it is thought to contribute statically to NPQ. The PSII connectivity parameter p correlated well with F′, Fm′ and NPQ during the early phase of the dark–light transients in sub-saturating light, suggesting a plastic energy distribution pattern within energetically connected PSII centres. In consecutive increasing photon flux experiments, correlations were weaker during the second light increment. Changes in connectivity can present an early photoresponse that are reflected in fluorescence signals and NPQ and might be responsive to the short-term acclimation state, and/or to the actinic photon flux

    NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION AND HEAVY METAL CONTAMINATION IN FISH FROM KARDZHALI DAM, BULGARIA

    This study aimed to determine the nutritional value, heavy metals, and micro and macro elements in four species of fish from the Kardzhali dam (Carassius gibelio, Perca fluviatilis, Vimba melanops and Rutilus rutilus). Data on the content of proteins, lipids, heavy metals, and micro and macro elements were obtained, and the energy value in kcal/100g and kJ/100 g fresh weight was calculated. The analyzed species can be divided into two groups: with low lipid content (up to 2.0%) - perch (1 g/100g fresh weight); and with medium lipid content (2.0-8.0%) - Prussian carp, malamida, and roach ( 2.0 to 2.7 g/100g fresh weight). All freshwater fish examined from the Kardzhali dam belonged to the category of foods with medium and high energy content (more than 170 kJ/100g) and were a good source of protein (21.52-24.54%). All four fish studied are essential magnesium, potassium, and sodium sources. Zinc, iron, phosphorus, and calcium predominate in Prussian carp and roach, while copper and manganese in malamida. The content of heavy metals mercury, lead, cadmium, and zinc in all fish examined was below the maximum allowable concentration (MAC). All four tested fish can be recommended for consumption by the population in the area

    Post-exposure administration of chimeric antibody protects mice against European, Siberian, and Far-Eastern subtypes of tick-borne encephalitis virus

    Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is the most important tick-transmitted pathogen. It belongs to the Flaviviridae family and causes severe human neuroinfections. In this study, protective efficacy of the chimeric antibody chFVN145 was examined in mice infected with strains belonging to the Far-Eastern, European, and Siberian subtypes of TBEV, and the antibody showed clear therapeutic efficacy when it was administered once one, two, or three days after infection. The efficacy was independent of the TBEV strain used to infect the mice; however, the survival rate of the mice was dependent on the dose of TBEV and of the antibody. No enhancement of TBEV infection was observed when the mice were treated with non-protective doses of chFVN145. Using a panel of recombinant fragments of the TBEV glycoprotein E, the neutralizing epitope for chFVN145 was localized in domain III of the TBEV glycoprotein E, in a region between amino acid residues 301 and 359. In addition, three potential sites responsible for binding with chFVN145 were determined using peptide phage display libraries, and 3D modeling demonstrated that the sites do not contact the fusion loop and, hence, their binding with chFVN145 does not result in increased attachment of TBEV to target cells
