Phase separation and rotor self-assembly in active particle suspensions
Adding a non-adsorbing polymer to passive colloids induces an attraction
between the particles via the `depletion' mechanism. High enough polymer
concentrations lead to phase separation. We combine experiments, theory and
simulations to demonstrate that using active colloids (such as motile bacteria)
dramatically changes the physics of such mixtures. First, significantly
stronger inter-particle attraction is needed to cause phase separation.
Secondly, the finite size aggregates formed at lower inter-particle attraction
show unidirectional rotation. These micro-rotors demonstrate the self assembly
of functional structures using active particles. The angular speed of the
rotating clusters scales approximately as the inverse of their size, which may
be understood theoretically by assuming that the torques exerted by the
outermost bacteria in a cluster add up randomly. Our simulations suggest that
both the suppression of phase separation and the self assembly of rotors are
generic features of aggregating swimmers, and should therefore occur in a

Measuring public opinion and acceptability of prevention policies: an integrative review and narrative synthesis of methods.
Acceptability of and public support for prevention are an important part of facilitating policy implementation. This review aims to identify, summarize and synthesize the methods and study designs used to measure and understand public opinion, community attitudes and acceptability of strategies to prevent chronic noncommunicable disease (NCDs) in order to allow for examination of imbalances in methodological approaches and gaps in content areas. We searched four scientific databases (CINAHL, Embase, Ovid/MEDLINE and Scopus) for peer-reviewed, English-language studies published between January 2011 and March 2020 in high-income, democratic countries across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Studies were included if they focused on opinions, attitudes and acceptability of primary prevention strategies and interventions addressing the key NCD risk factors of alcohol use, unhealthy diet, overweight/obesity, tobacco use and smoking, and physical inactivity. A total of 293 studies were included. Two thirds of studies (n = 194, 66%) used quantitative methods such as cross-sectional studies involving surveys of representative (n = 129, 44%) or convenience (n = 42, 14%) samples. A smaller number of studies used qualitative methods (n = 60, 20%) such as focus groups (n = 21, 7%) and interviews (n = 21, 7%). Thirty-nine studies (13%) used mixed methods such as content analysis of news media (n = 17, 6%). Tobacco control remains the dominant topic of public opinion literature about prevention (n = 124, 42%). Few studies looked solely at physical inactivity (n = 17, 6%). The results of this review suggest that public opinion and acceptability of prevention in the peer-reviewed literature is investigated primarily through cross-sectional surveys. Qualitative and mixed methods may provide more nuanced insights which can be used to facilitate policy implementation of more upstream strategies and policies to prevent NCDs
Arthroscopic treatment of bucket-handle labral tear and acetabular fracture
Traumatic hip dislocations are associated with chondral and labral pathology as well as loose bodies that can be incarcerated in the joint. These types of injury often lead to traumatic arthritis. In some cases an osseo-labral fragment may become incarcerated in the joint that is not readily visualized preoperatively. In place of open surgery, hip arthroscopy permits a technique to remove loose bodies and repair labral tears to restore joint congruity and achieve fracture reduction and fixation
Being Healthy: a Grounded Theory Study of Help Seeking Behaviour among Chinese Elders living in the UK
The health of older people is a priority in many countries as the world’s population ages. Attitudes towards help seeking behaviours in older people remain a largely unexplored field of research. This is particularly true for older minority groups where the place that they have migrated to presents both cultural and structural challenges. The UK, like other countries,has an increasingly aging Chinese population about who relatively little is known. This study used a qualitative grounded
theory design following the approach of Glaser (1978). Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 33 Chinese elders who were aged between 60 and 84, using purposive and theoretical sampling approaches. Data were analysed using the constant comparative method until data saturation occurred and a substantive theory was generated. ‘Being healthy’ (the core category) with four interrelated categories: self-management, normalizing/minimizing, access to health services, and being cured form the theory. The theory was generated around the core explanations provided by
participants and Chinese elders’ concerns about health issues they face in their daily life. We also present data about how they direct their health-related activities towards meeting their physical and psychological goals of being healthy. Their differential understanding of diseases and a lack of information about health services were potent predictors of non�help seeking and ‘self’ rather than medical management of their illnesses. This study highlights the need for intervention and health support for Chinese elders
Molecular mediators of the association between child obesity and mental health
Biological mechanisms underlying the association between obesity and depression remain unclear. We investigated the role of metabolites and DNA methylation as mediators of the relationship between childhood obesity and subsequent poor mental health in the English Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Obesity was defined according to United Kingdom Growth charts at age 7 years and mental health through the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ) completed at age 11 years. Metabolites and DNA methylation were measured by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Illumina array in blood at the age of 7 years. The associations between obesity and SMFQ score, as continuous count data or using cut-offs to define depressive symptoms (SMFQ >7) or depression (SMFQ >11), were tested using adjusted Poisson and logistic regression. Candidate metabolite mediators were identified through metabolome-wide association scans for obesity and SMFQ score, correcting for false-discovery rate. Candidate DNA methylation mediators were identified through testing the association of putative BMI-associated CpG sites with SMFQ scores, correcting for look-up false-discovery rate. Mediation by candidate molecular markers was tested. Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were additionally applied to test causal associations of metabolites with depression in independent adult samples. 4,018 and 768 children were included for metabolomics and epigenetics analyses, respectively. Obesity at 7 years was associated with a 14% increase in SMFQ score (95% CI: 1.04, 1.25) and greater odds of depression (OR: 1.46 (95% CI: 0.78, 2.38) at 11 years. Natural indirect effects (mediating pathways) between obesity and depression for tyrosine, leucine and conjugated linoleic acid were 1.06 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.13, proportion mediated (PM): 15%), 1.04 (95% CI: 0.99, 1.10, PM: 9.6%) and 1.06 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.12, PM: 13.9%) respectively. In MR analysis, one unit increase in tyrosine was associated with 0.13 higher log odds of depression (p = 0.1). Methylation at cg17128312, located in the FBXW9 gene, had a natural indirect effect of 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01,1.13, PM: 27%) as a mediator of obesity and SMFQ score. Potential biologically plausible mechanisms involving these identified molecular features include neurotransmitter regulation, inflammation, and gut microbiome modulation. These results require replication in further observational and mechanistic studies
The observational advantages of euler diagrams with existential import
The ability of diagrams to convey information effectively in part comes from their ability to make facts explicit that would otherwise need to be inferred. This type of advantage has often been referred to as a free ride and was deemed to occur only when a diagram was obtained by translating a symbolic representation of information. Recent work gen- eralised free rides to the idea of an observational advantage, where the existence of such a translation is not required. Roughly speaking, it has been shown that Euler diagrams without existential import are observa- tionally complete as compared to symbolic set theory. In this paper, we explore to what extent Euler diagrams with existential import are ob- servationally complete with respect to set-theoretic sentences. We show that existential import significantly limits the cases when observational completeness arises, due to the potential for overspecificity

Hot blast stove process model and model-based controller
This paper describes the process model and model-based control techniques implemented on the hot blast stoves for the No. 7 Blast Furnace at the Inland Steel facility in East Chicago, Indiana. A detailed heat transfer model of the stoves is developed and verified using plant data. This model is used as part of a predictive control scheme to determine the minimum amount of fuel necessary to achieve the blast air requirements. The model is also used to predict maximum and minimum temperature constraint violations within the stove so that the controller can take corrective actions while still achieving the required stove performance
Periodic and Quasiperiodic Motion of an Elongated Microswimmer in Poiseuille Flow
We study the dynamics of a prolate spheroidal microswimmer in Poiseuille flow
for different flow geometries. When moving between two parallel plates or in a
cylindrical microchannel, the swimmer performs either periodic swinging or
periodic tumbling motion. Although the trajectories of spherical and elongated
swimmers are qualitatively similar, the swinging and tumbling frequency
strongly depends on the aspect ratio of the swimmer. In channels with reduced
symmetry the swimmers perform quasiperiodic motion which we demonstrate
explicitely for swimming in a channel with elliptical cross section
