Suffix conjugates for a class of morphic subshifts

Let A be a finite alphabet and f: A^* --> A^* be a morphism with an iterative fixed point f^\omega(\alpha), where \alpha{} is in A. Consider the subshift (X, T), where X is the shift orbit closure of f^\omega(\alpha) and T: X --> X is the shift map. Let S be a finite alphabet that is in bijective correspondence via a mapping c with the set of nonempty suffixes of the images f(a) for a in A. Let calS be a subset S^N be the set of infinite words s = (s_n)_{n\geq 0} such that \pi(s):= c(s_0)f(c(s_1)) f^2(c(s_2))... is in X. We show that if f is primitive and f(A) is a suffix code, then there exists a mapping H: calS --> calS such that (calS, H) is a topological dynamical system and \pi: (calS, H) --> (X, T) is a conjugacy; we call (calS, H) the suffix conjugate of (X, T). In the special case when f is the Fibonacci or the Thue-Morse morphism, we show that the subshift (calS, T) is sofic, that is, the language of calS is regular

Towards the spatial resolution of metalloprotein charge states by detailed modeling of XFEL crystallographic diffraction.

Oxidation states of individual metal atoms within a metalloprotein can be assigned by examining X-ray absorption edges, which shift to higher energy for progressively more positive valence numbers. Indeed, X-ray crystallography is well suited for such a measurement, owing to its ability to spatially resolve the scattering contributions of individual metal atoms that have distinct electronic environments contributing to protein function. However, as the magnitude of the shift is quite small, about +2 eV per valence state for iron, it has only been possible to measure the effect when performed with monochromated X-ray sources at synchrotron facilities with energy resolutions in the range 2-3 × 10-4 (ΔE/E). This paper tests whether X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses, which have a broader bandpass (ΔE/E = 3 × 10-3) when used without a monochromator, might also be useful for such studies. The program nanoBragg is used to simulate serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) diffraction images with sufficient granularity to model the XFEL spectrum, the crystal mosaicity and the wavelength-dependent anomalous scattering factors contributed by two differently charged iron centers in the 110-amino-acid protein, ferredoxin. Bayesian methods are then used to deduce, from the simulated data, the most likely X-ray absorption curves for each metal atom in the protein, which agree well with the curves chosen for the simulation. The data analysis relies critically on the ability to measure the incident spectrum for each pulse, and also on the nanoBragg simulator to predict the size, shape and intensity profile of Bragg spots based on an underlying physical model that includes the absorption curves, which are then modified to produce the best agreement with the simulated data. This inference methodology potentially enables the use of SFX diffraction for the study of metalloenzyme mechanisms and, in general, offers a more detailed approach to Bragg spot data reduction

Experiment requirements: Vitamin D metabolites and bone demineralization, Spacelab 2, experiment no. 1

As a contribution toward an understanding of the molecular basis of bone loss, mineral imbalance, and increasing fecal calcium under conditions of prolonged space flight, the blood levels of biologically active vitamin D metabolites of flight crew members will be quantitatively measured. Prior to the mission, the refinement of existing and the development of new techniques for the assay of all vitamin D metabolites will provide an arsenal of methods suitable for a wide range of metabolite levels. In terms of practical application, the analysis of human and animal plasma samples, Spacelab crew plasma samples, and flight hardware are envisioned

The temporal response of bone to unloading

Rats were suspended by their tails with the forelimbs bearing the weight load to simulate the weightlessness of space flight. Growth in bone mass ceased by 1 week in the hindlimbs and lumbar vertebrae in growing rats, while growth in the forelimbs and cervical vertebrae remained unaffected. The effects of selective skeletal unloading on bone formation during 2 weeks of suspension was investigated using radio iostope incorporation (with Ca-45 and H-3 proline) and histomorphometry (with tetracycline labeling). The results of these studies were confirmed by histomorphometric measurements of bone formation using triple tetracycline labeling. This model of simulated weightlessness results in an initial inhibition of bone formation in the unloaded bones. This temporary cessation of bone formation is followed in the accretion of bone mass, which then resumes at a normal rate by 14 days, despite continued skeletal unloading. This cycle of inhibition and resumption of bone formation has profound implication for understanding bone dynamics durng space flight, immobilization, or bed rest and offers an opportunity to study the hormonal and mechanical factors that regulate bone formation

Trust and trustworthiness

What is it to trust someone? What is it for someone to be trustworthy? These are the two main questions that this paper addresses. There are various situations that can be described as ones of trust, but this paper considers the issue of trust between individuals. In it, I suggest that trust is distinct from reliance or cases where someone asks for something on the expectation that it will be done due to the different attitude taken by the trustor. I argue that the trustor takes Holton's 'participant stance' and this distinguishes trust from reliance. I argue that trustworthiness is different from reliability and that an account of trustworthiness cannot be successful whilst ignoring the point that aligning trustworthiness with reliability removes the virtue from being trustworthy. On the question of what it is distinguishes trustworthiness from reliability, I argue that the distinction is in the opportunity for the trustee to act against the wishes of the trustor and the trustee's consideration of the value of the trust that has been placed in them by the trustor

Lifestyle and health factors associated with progressing and remitting trajectories of untreated lower urinary tract symptoms among elderly men.

BackgroundKnowledge of factors associated with the course of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) before treatment is needed to inform preventive interventions. In a prospective study of elderly men untreated for LUTS, we identified factors associated with symptom progression and remission.MethodsIn community-dwelling US men aged ≥65 years, the American Urological Association Symptom Index (AUA-SI) was repeated four times, once at baseline (2000-2002) and then every 2 years thereafter. Analyses included 1740 men with all four AUA-SI assessments, who remained free from diagnosed prostate cancer, and who reported no treatment for LUTS or BPH during follow-up that averaged 6.9 (±0.4) years. LUTS change was determined with group-based trajectory modelingof the repeated AUA-SI measures. Multivariable logistic regression was then used to determine the baseline factors associated with progressing compared with stable trajectories, and with remitting compared with progressing trajectories. Lifestyle, body mass index (BMI) (kg/m(2)), mobility, mental health (Short-Form 12), medical history and prescription medications were considered for selection. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for variables in each model.ResultsWe identified 10 AUA-SI trajectories: 4 stable (1277 men, 73%), three progressing (345 men, 20%), two remitting (98 men, 6%) and one mixed (20 men, 1%). Men in progressing compared with stable trajectories were more likely to have mobility limitations (OR=2.0, 95% CI: 1.0-3.8), poor mental health (OR=1.9, 95% CI: 1.1-3.4), BMI≥25.0 kg m(-2) (OR=1.7, 95% CI: 1.0-2.8), hypertension (OR=1.5, 95% CI: 1.0-2.4) and back pain (OR=1.5, 95% CI: 1.0-2.4). Men in remitting compared with progressing trajectories more often used central nervous system medications (OR=2.3, 95% CI: 1.1-4.9) and less often had a history of problem drinking (OR=0.4, 95% CI: 0.2-0.9).ConclusionsSeveral non-urological lifestyle and health factors were independently associated with risk of LUTS progression in older men

Efficacy of mupirocin nasal ointment in eradicating Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage in chronic haemodialysis patients

Topical 2% mupirocin ointment eradicated chronic Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage immediately post-therapy in 17 (77%) of 22 haemodialysis patients. Mean time to recurrence was 3.8 weeks. Similar pre-therapy and post-therapy phage types occurred in 12 (71%) of 17 patients. Staphylococcus aureus infections developed in none of 17 successfully treated patients, two of five treatment failures (P = 0.05), and 10 of 46 untreated patients studied concurrently (P = 0.03)

Being-in-motion: the everyday (gendered and classed) embodied mobilities for UK university students who commute

This article makes the case for a more robust mobilities approach to student geographies in the UK, in order to problematise the enduring binary of [im]mobility (‘going away’ versus ‘staying local’) and to challenge the presumed linearity of educational (and mobility) transitions in higher education. Through a discussion of two UK-based studies, we make the case for considering the complex and multi-layered everyday mobilities of students who commute to illuminate a broader range of mobility practices that shape students’ experiences and identities, and which are embedded in multiple and intersecting embodiments of class, gender, age and ethnicity
