    A highly active and redox stable novel ceramic anode with in-situ exsolution of nanocatalysts

    Layered perovskite novel ceramic anode (referred to as SGNM) phases were evaluated for use in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) analysis of the SGNM materials revealed that significant exsolution of Ni nanoparticles occurred. Consistently, the SGNM on the LSGM electrolyte showed low electrode polarization resistance in H2 at 800 °C. Moreover, after 10 redox cycles at 750 °C, the electrode area specific resistance of the SGNM anode in H2 slightly increased during cycle, indicating excellent redox stability in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. An LSGM-electrolyte supported SOFC employing an SGNM-based anode yielded a high power density of ~1 W cm-2 at 800 °C, which is the best performance among the any SOFCs with Ruddlesden-Popper based ceramic anodes to date. After performance measurement, we observed that metallic Ni nanoparticles (~ 25 nm) were grown in situ and homogeneously distributed on the SGNM anode surface. These exsolved nanocatalysts are believed to significantly enhance the hydrogen oxidation activity of the SGNM material.     TRPV1-expressing primary afferents generate behavioral responses to pruritogens via multiple mechanisms

    The mechanisms that generate itch are poorly understood at both the molecular and cellular levels despite its clinical importance. To explore the peripheral neuronal mechanisms underlying itch, we assessed the behavioral responses (scratching) produced by s.c. injection of various pruritogens in PLCβ3- or TRPV1-deficient mice. We provide evidence that at least 3 different molecular pathways contribute to the transduction of itch responses to different pruritogens: 1) histamine requires the function of both PLCβ3 and the TRPV1 channel; 2) serotonin, or a selective agonist, α-methyl-serotonin (α-Me-5-HT), requires the presence of PLCβ3 but not TRPV1, and 3) endothelin-1 (ET-1) does not require either PLCβ3 or TRPV1. To determine whether the activity of these molecules is represented in a particular subpopulation of sensory neurons, we examined the behavioral consequences of selectively eliminating 2 nonoverlapping subsets of nociceptors. The genetic ablation of MrgprD^+ neurons that represent ≈90% of cutaneous nonpeptidergic neurons did not affect the scratching responses to a number of pruritogens. In contrast, chemical ablation of the central branch of TRPV1+ nociceptors led to a significant behavioral deficit for pruritogens, including α-Me-5-HT and ET-1, that is, the TRPV1-expressing nociceptor was required, whether or not TRPV1 itself was essential. Thus, TRPV1 neurons are equipped with multiple signaling mechanisms that respond to different pruritogens. Some of these require TRPV1 function; others use alternate signal transduction pathways

    Correlation effects during liquid infiltration into hydrophobic nanoporous mediums

    Correlation effects arising during liquid infiltration into hydrophobic porous medium are considered. On the basis of these effects a mechanism of energy absorption at filling porous medium by nonwetting liquid is suggested. In accordance with this mechanism, the absorption of mechanical energy is a result expenditure of energy for the formation of menisci in the pores on the shell of the infinite cluster and expenditure of energy for the formation of liquid-porous medium interface in the pores belonging to the infinite cluster of filled pores. It was found that in dependences on the porosity and, consequently, in dependences on the number of filled pores neighbors, the thermal effect of filling can be either positive or negative and the cycle of infiltration-defiltration can be closed with full outflow of liquid. It can occur under certain relation between percolation properties of porous medium and the energy characteristics of the liquid-porous medium interface and the liquid-gas interface. It is shown that a consecutive account of these correlation effects and percolation properties of the pores space during infiltration allow to describe all experimental data under discussion

    KMT-2018-BLG-1292: A Super-Jovian Microlens Planet in the Galactic Plane

    We report the discovery of KMT-2018-BLG-1292Lb, a super-Jovian Mplanet=4.5±1.3 MJM_{\rm planet} = 4.5\pm 1.3\,M_J planet orbiting an F or G dwarf Mhost=1.5±0.4 M⊙M_{\rm host} = 1.5\pm 0.4\,M_\odot, which lies physically within {\cal O}(10\,\pc) of the Galactic plane. The source star is a heavily extincted AI∼5.2A_I\sim 5.2 luminous giant that has the lowest Galactic latitude, b=−0.28∘b=-0.28^\circ, of any planetary microlensing event. The relatively blue blended light is almost certainly either the host or its binary companion, with the first explanation being substantially more likely. This blend dominates the light at II band and completely dominates at RR and VV bands. Hence, the lens system can be probed by follow-up observations immediately, i.e., long before the lens system and the source separate due to their relative proper motion. The system is well characterized despite the low cadence Γ=0.15\Gamma=0.15--0.20 hr−10.20\,{\rm hr^{-1}} of observations and short viewing windows near the end of the bulge season. This suggests that optical microlensing planet searches can be extended to the Galactic plane at relatively modest cost.Comment: 35 pages, 3 Tables, 8 figure

    Correlating the nanostructure and electronic properties of InAs nanowires

    The electronic properties and nanostructure of InAs nanowires are correlated by creating multiple field effect transistors (FETs) on nanowires grown to have low and high defect density segments. 4.2 K carrier mobilities are ~4X larger in the nominally defect-free segments of the wire. We also find that dark field optical intensity is correlated with the mobility, suggesting a simple route for selecting wires with a low defect density. At low temperatures, FETs fabricated on high defect density segments of InAs nanowires showed transport properties consistent with single electron charging, even on devices with low resistance ohmic contacts. The charging energies obtained suggest quantum dot formation at defects in the wires. These results reinforce the importance of controlling the defect density in order to produce high quality electrical and optical devices using InAs nanowires.Comment: Related papers at http://pettagroup.princeton.ed
