    Digital cultural heritage: Collaborating with students and discovering lost museums

    Our paper consists of two parts. First, we review the history of the Royal United Service Institute (RUSI) museum, its collections, its closure and the dispersal of its collections. Second, we synthesize this analysis with a summary and reflection on the challenges of undertaking a collective memory project that represents the rise and fall of empire. To synthesize these two points, we discuss the museum’s history and highlight how digital cultural heritage initiatives have catalyzed an interest in digitizing and archiving RUSI’s collection records. Following our review of RUSI and its museum collection, we discuss the value of academics forming partnerships with cultural heritage institutions, and we analyze our experiences managing two student projects hosted at RUSI. Our discussion of student work will reflect on methods for designing engaging curriculum that encourages students to practice record keeping for cultural heritage institutions

    Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-poly(ethylene oxide)-heparin block copolymers II: Surface characterization and in vitro assessments

    Amphiphilic block copolymers containing poly(dimethylsiloxane), poly(ethylene oxide), as well as heparin-coated glass beads and tubes were evaluated for the amounts and activities of surface-immobilized heparin. Because the amphiphilic copolymer system is thermodynanmcally predicted to demonstrate low-energy phase enrichment on the surfaces of aircast films, studies were also undertaken to understand the in vitro results. Solvent-cast copolymer films have a heterogeneous microphase-separated structure according to transmission electron micrographs. Wilhelmy plate contact angle analysis indicates significant surface restructuring occurs upon hydration. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy studies of the desiccated and hydrated films at two different sampling depths show compositional heterogeneity as a function of depth, as well as near surface restructuring allowing surface enrichment of the high-energy segments following contact with water. Significant concentrations of heparin are detected on the surface of these coatings by toluidine blue assays. In addition, a portion of the surface-bound heparin maintains its original bioactivity as determined by recalification times, thrombin times, and Factor Xa assays. These substrates were also tested for platelet adhesion and activation reactions in vitro using polymer-coated beads in rabbit platelet-rich plasma. Heparinized polymers promoted low levels of platelet adhesion and serotonin release. Surface concentrations of heparin from bioactivity assays were then correlated with platelet adhesion and the extent of platelet release to assess the efficacy of this heparin-immobilized copolymer as a blood-compatible material or coating

    Post-16 Area-Based Reviews in London: A small step towards a more universal and coherent skills system in the Capital?

    This report summarises three years of research into Area-Based Reviews in London (ABRs). It argues that ABRs have involved two logics - Logic A with a focus on college economic viability and Logic B, a focus on skills, progression and relationships with employers. So far Logic A has dominated Logic B, but then new regional and sub-regional developments might promote Logic B in the coming period

    Area-based reviews and their aftermath: moving to a post-incorporation model for further education in England?

    This article draws on research into the further education (FE) Area-Based Review (ABR) process in London, England over the period 2016–2018 to suggest that the significance of ABRs can be judged as to the extent they reinforce or challenge the historical marketised model of FE. The implications of ABR are viewed historically through the conceptual lens of two governance continua – market/public (economic) and centralised/devolved (political). The research, involving repeated interviews with a range of FE social partners over a three-year period, developed the concept of two inter-related logics – a dominant ‘Logic A’ focused on FE college viability and merger and a subordinate ‘Logic B’ focused on regional skills strategies and greater collaboration between social partners. The significance of ABRs is assessed in relation to the wider English policy contexts that point to a need for greater skills coordination. At the same time, a comparison of ABRs in England with the ‘regionalisation’ of FE colleges in the other three countries of the UK highlights its relatively unplanned character. The article concludes with a discussion around the evolving relationship between the two Logics and argues that, albeit hesitantly, FE colleges in England may be moving towards a ‘Post-Incorporation’ phase

    Extinciones de especies de Galliformes y conocimientos científicos: lo que sabemos y lo que necesitamos saber A principios de 2010, las 193 partes que habían firmado el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica reconocieron que no habían cumplido el objetivo que ellas mismas habían fijado en 1992 de reducir de forma significativa las extinciones de especies en 2010. Al final del año establecieron un objetivo nuevo y más ambicioso que consistía en evitar las extinciones de especies en 2020. Lograr dicho objetivo requerirá una utilización mucho más eficiente de los recursos y la investigación tiene un papel fundamental en hacer que esto ocurra. Existen 290 especies de Galliformes, de las cuales el 26% se considera en peligro de extinción, en comparación con el 12% del total de las 10.000 especies de aves. Al mismo tiempo, hay numerosos estudios publicados sobre el grupo que abarcan décadas para algunas especies. Por consiguiente, es oportuno analizar si es posible aumentar la eficiencia y las repercusiones a escala mundial de la investigación sobre aves de caza, de forma que, con la planificación meticulosa que conlleva más orientación estratégica e intercambio de experiencias, los biólogos especializados en este tipo de aves puedan desempeñar una función destacada en la consecución del objetivo de 2020 para las especies aprobado por el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica. Los ámbitos específicos que necesitan este planteamiento de intercambio de experiencias son la estimación de la población y la evaluación de las amenazas, el análisis de la explotación y la determinación de la base ecológica de las intervenciones que hayan obtenido buenos resultados

    Food waste reduction in supply chains through innovations: a review

    Purpose: Agri-food supply chains are facing a number of challenges, which cause inefficiencies resulting in the waste of natural and economic resources, and in negative environmental and social impacts. Food waste (FW) is a result of such inefficiencies and supply chain actors search for economically viable innovations to prevent and reduce it. This study aims to analyse the drivers and the barriers that affect the decision of supply chain operators to adopt innovations (technological – TI, organisational – OI and marketing – MI) to reduce FW. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis was carried out using a four-step approach that included: a literature review to identify factors affecting the decision to adopt innovations; analysis of FW drivers and reduction possibilities along agri-food supply chains through innovations; mapping the results of Steps 1 and 2 and deriving conclusions regarding the factors affecting the adoption of innovations to reduce and prevent FW. Findings: Results show that different types of innovations have a high potential in reducing and preventing FW along the supply chain; however, they still must be economically feasible to be adopted by decision makers in the food supply chain. TI, OI and MI are often interrelated and can trigger each other. When it comes to a combination of different types of innovation to reduce and prevent FW, a good example of combining TI, OI and MI may be observed in the retail sector in Europe. Here, innovative smartphone apps (TI) to promote the sale of products nearing their expiration dates (OI in terms of organising the sales differently and MI in terms of marketing it differently) were developed and adopted via different retailing channels, leading to the creation of a new business model. Practical implications: This study analyses the drivers of FW generation together with the factors affecting the decision to adopt innovations to reduce it and provides solutions to supply chain operators to prevent and reduce FW through different types of innovations. Originality/value: Literature has not systematically addressed innovations aiming at the reduction of FW yet. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of the determinants of innovation adoption and offers a novel view on the problem of FW reduction by means of innovation, by linking factors affecting the decision to innovate with FW drivers

    Internal Model Control of a Domestic Microwave for Carbon Composite Curing

    This paper outlines the conversion of a domestic microwave oven for use in composite curing applications. It compares several strategies for temperature control. The converted oven has vacuum ports, connectors, and fiber optic thermocouple sensors. Experimental data are provided for each control strategy based on a 200 mm× 200 mm eight-ply prepreg laminate. The degree of cure is established for the test samples by thermal analysis techniques. Multiphysics simulation is used to model the electromagnetic and heating effects in the system, and a common and inexpensive method of approximating the available microwave power is used. The low cost of the microwave components and the ease of conversion are desirable characteristicsin this application

    The holy blood and the holy grail: Myths of scientific racism and the pursuit of excellence in sport

    Despite the continuing publication of research that suggests there is no scientific basis to 'race' as a biological category, theories of racial difference continue to be invoked within sport to explain the perceived dominance of black athletes. In the case of John Entine's controversial 'Taboo: why black athletes dominate sports and why we are afraid to talk about it' or undergraduate textbooks that suggest 'racial differences' in physique may significantly affect athletic performance, scientific racism is normalised in sport. In this article, the relationship between scientific racism and sport will be examined. Qualitative research with current sport scientists is used to investigate the socio-ethical tensions within the subject field of sport science between professionalism, scientism and the demand from external interests to produce results that help people in sport win medals. It will be shown that these tensions, combined with the history of race as a category in sport science, combine to create the discourse of scientific knowledge that reflects, rather than challenges, folk genetics of black athletic physicality

    The influence of rs53576 polymorphism in the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene on empathy in healthy adults by subtype and ethnicity: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Empathy is essential for navigating complex social environments. Prior work has shown associations between rs53576, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) located in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR), and generalized empathy. We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effects of rs53576 on subdomains of empathy, specifically cognitive empathy (CE) and affective empathy (AE), in healthy adults. Twenty cohorts of 8933 participants aged 18-98 were identified, including data from the Sydney Memory and Ageing Study, a cohort of older community adults. Meta-analyses found G homozygotes had greater generalized empathic abilities only in young to middle-aged adults. While meta-analyses of empathy subdomains yielded no significant overall effects, there were differential effects based on ethnicity. G homozygotes were associated with greater CE abilities in Asian cohorts (standardized mean difference; SMD: 0.09 [2.8·10-3-0.18]), and greater AE performance in European cohorts [SMD: 0.12 (0.04-0.21)]. The current literature highlights a need for further work that distinguishes between genetic and ethnocultural effects and explores effects of advanced age on this relationship
