    Infrared exponents and the strong-coupling limit in lattice Landau gauge

    We study the gluon and ghost propagators of lattice Landau gauge in the strong-coupling limit beta=0 in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory to find evidence of the conformal infrared behavior of these propagators as predicted by a variety of functional continuum methods for asymptotically small momenta q2ΛQCD2q^2 \ll \Lambda_\mathrm{QCD}^2. In the strong-coupling limit, this same behavior is obtained for the larger values of a^2q^2 (in units of the lattice spacing a), where it is otherwise swamped by the gauge field dynamics. Deviations for a^2q^2 < 1 are well parameterized by a transverse gluon mass 1/a\propto 1/a. Perhaps unexpectedly, these deviations are thus no finite-volume effect but persist in the infinite-volume limit. They furthermore depend on the definition of gauge fields on the lattice, while the asymptotic conformal behavior does not.     Pressure-Induced Rotational Symmetry Breaking in URu2_2Si2_2

    Phase transitions and symmetry are intimately linked. Melting of ice, for example, restores translation invariance. The mysterious hidden order (HO) phase of URu2_2Si2_2 has, despite relentless research efforts, kept its symmetry breaking element intangible. Here we present a high-resolution x-ray diffraction study of the URu2_2Si2_2 crystal structure as a function of hydrostatic pressure. Below a critical pressure threshold pc3p_c\approx3 kbar, no tetragonal lattice symmetry breaking is observed even below the HO transition THO=17.5T_{HO}=17.5 K. For p>pcp>p_c, however, a pressure-induced rotational symmetry breaking is identified with an onset temperatures TOR100T_{OR}\sim 100 K. The emergence of an orthorhombic phase is found and discussed in terms of an electronic nematic order that appears unrelated to the HO, but with possible relevance for the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. Existing theories describe the HO and AF phases through an adiabatic continuity of a complex order parameter. Since none of these theories predicts a pressure-induced nematic order, our finding adds an additional symmetry breaking element to this long-standing problem.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures and supplemental material

    Acute ascending aortic dissection complicating open heart surgery: cerebral perfusion defines the outcome

    Objective: This retrospective study was designed to assess the risks of acute ascending aorta dissection (AAD) as a rare but potentially fatal complication of open heart surgery. Method: Among 8624 cardiac surgical procedures under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and cardioplegic myocardial protection from 1978 to 1997, 10 patients (0.12%) presented with a secondary or so called ‘iatrogenic' AAD. There were seven men and three women, mean age 64±9 years, ranging from 47 to 79. The original procedures involved five coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), one repeat CABG, one aortic valve replacement (AVR), one AVR and CABG, one mitral valvuloplasty (MVP) and CABG and one ascending aorta replacement. We retrospectively analyzed their hospital records. Results: Group I consisted of seven patients with AAD intraoperatively and group II consisted of three patients who developed acute AAD 8-32 days after cardiac surgery. In group I, treatment consisted of the original procedure, plus grafting of the ascending aorta in six patients and closed plication and aortic wrapping in one. In group II, two patients received a dacron graft and one patient developed lethal tamponnade due to aortic rupture before surgery. Postoperatively, six patients responded well and three died (33%), two patients from group I on the 2nd postoperative day with severe post-anoxic encephalopathy, and one from group II with severe peroperative cardiogenic shock. Conclusion: Preventing AAD with the appropriate means remains standard practice in cardiac surgery. If AAD occurs, it requires prompt diagnosis and interposition graft to allow a better prognosis.     On the infrared behaviour of Gluons and Ghosts in Ghost-Antighost symmetric gauges

    To investigate the possibility of a ghost-antighost condensate the coupled Dyson--Schwinger equations for the gluon and ghost propagators in Yang--Mills theories are derived in general covariant gauges, including ghost-antighost symmetric gauges. The infrared behaviour of these two-point functions is studied in a bare-vertex truncation scheme which has proven to be successful in Landau gauge. In all linear covariant gauges the same infrared behaviour as in Landau gauge is found: The gluon propagator is infrared suppressed whereas the ghost propagator is infrared enhanced. This infrared singular behaviour provides indication against a ghost-antighost condensate. In the ghost-antighost symmetric gauges we find that the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators cannot be determined when replacing all dressed vertices by bare ones.     Assessment of successful incorporation of cages after cervical or lumbar intercorporal fusion with [(18)F]fluoride positron-emission tomography/computed tomography

    The purpose of this study is to assess the successful incorporation of cages in patients after cervical or lumbar intercorporal fusion with positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Twenty patients (14 female and 6 male; mean age 58years, age range 38-73years) with 30 cervical (n=13) or lumbar (n=17) intercorporal fusions were prospectively enrolled in this study. Time interval between last intercorporal intervention and PET/CT ranged from 2 to 116months (mean 63; median 77months). IRB approval was obtained for all patients, and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. About 30min prior to PET/CT scanning, 97-217MBq (mean 161MBq) 18F-fluoride were administered intravenously. Patients were imaged in supine position on a combined PET/CT system (Discovery RX/STE, 16/64 slice CT, GE Healthcare). 3D-PET emission data were acquired for 1.5 and 2min/bed position, respectively, and reconstructed by a fully 3D iterative algorithm (VUE Point HD) using low-dose CT data for attenuation correction. A dedicated diagnostic thin-slice CT was optionally acquired covering the fused region. Areas of increased 18F-fluoride uptake around cages were determined by one double-board certified radiologist/nuclear physician and one board certified radiologist in consensus. In 12/20 (60%) patients, increased 18F-fluoride uptake around cages was observed. Of the 30 intercorporal fusions, 15 (50%) showed increased 18F-fluoride uptake. Median time between intervention and PET/CT examination in cages with increased uptake was 37months (2-116months), median time between intervention and PET/CT examination in those cages without increased uptake was 91months (19-112months), p (Wilcoxon)=0.01 (one-sided). 14/29 (48%) cages with a time interval>1year between intervention and PET/CT scan showed an increased uptake. In conclusion, PET/CT frequently shows increased 18F-fluoride uptake in cervical and lumbar cages older than 1year (up to almost 8years in cervical cages and 10years in lumbar cages) possibly indicating unsuccessful fusion due to increased stress/microinstabilit

    Strong-coupling study of the Gribov ambiguity in lattice Landau gauge

    We study the strong-coupling limit beta=0 of lattice SU(2) Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. In this limit the lattice spacing is infinite, and thus all momenta in physical units are infinitesimally small. Hence, the infrared behavior can be assessed at sufficiently large lattice momenta. Our results show that at the lattice volumes used here, the Gribov ambiguity has an enormous effect on the ghost propagator in all dimensions. This underlines the severity of the Gribov problem and calls for refined studies also at finite beta.     Evidence for electronically-driven ferroelectricity in the family of strongly correlated dimerized BEDT-TTF molecular conductors

    By applying measurements of the dielectric constants and relative length changes to the dimerized molecular conductor κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Hg(SCN)2_2Cl, we provide evidence for order-disorder type electronic ferroelectricity which is driven by charge order within the (BEDT-TTF)2_2 dimers and stabilized by a coupling to the anions. According to our density functional theory calculations, this material is characterized by a moderate strength of dimerization. This system thus bridges the gap between strongly dimerized materials, often approximated as dimer-Mott systems at 1/2 filling, and non- or weakly dimerized systems at 1/4 filling exhibiting charge order. Our results indicate that intra-dimer charge degrees of freedom are of particular importance in correlated κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2X salts and can create novel states, such as electronically-driven multiferroicity or charge-order-induced quasi-1D spin liquids.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + Supplementary Information (8 pages, 8 figures

    Zusammenfassung: Fragestellung: Der Von-Hippel-Lindau- (VHL-)Tumorsuppressor ist ein multifunktionelles Protein. VHL-Mutationen treten häufig auf im klarzelligen Nierenzellkarzinom (kNZK). Verschiedene Mutationstypen führen vermutlich zu spezifischen pVHL-Funktionsveränderungen, die wiederum einen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Genexpression und schließlich auf den Krankheitsverlauf haben dürften. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist die Korrelation von Genexpressionssignaturen mit spezifischen VHL-Mutationstypen im kNZK. Methodik: Transkriptomanalyse wurde für 94 kNZK und 21 papilläre NZK (pNZK) mittels Affymetrix HG U133A Genchips durchgeführt. Alle 94 kNZK wurden auf VHL-Mutationen analysiert. Ergebnisse: Ein "hierarchical clustering" anhand der zwischen kNZK und pNZK differenziell regulierten Gene zeigt eine deutliche Stratifizierung der beiden histologischen Subtypen. 186 Gene wurden zwischen VHL-Wildtyp kNZK und kNZK mit mutiertem VHL-Gen differenziell exprimiert.
