    Three Dimensional Ising Model, Percolation Theory and Conformal Invariance

    The fractal structure and scaling properties of a 2d slice of the 3d Ising model is studied using Monte Carlo techniques. The percolation transition of geometric spin (GS) clusters is found to occur at the Curie point, reflecting the critical behavior of the 3d model. The fractal dimension and the winding angle statistics of the perimeter and external perimeter of the geometric spin clusters at the critical point suggest that, if conformally invariant in the scaling limit, they can be described by the theory of Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE_\kappa) with diffusivity of \kappa=5 and 16/5, respectively, putting them in the same universality class as the interfaces in 2d tricritical Ising model. It is also found that the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) clusters associated with the cross sections undergo a nontrivial percolation transition, in the same universality class as the ordinary 2d critical percolation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in EuroPhysics Letters (EPL

    Data-Driven Key Performance Indicators and Datasets for Building Energy Flexibility: A Review and Perspectives

    Energy flexibility, through short-term demand-side management (DSM) and energy storage technologies, is now seen as a major key to balancing the fluctuating supply in different energy grids with the energy demand of buildings. This is especially important when considering the intermittent nature of ever-growing renewable energy production, as well as the increasing dynamics of electricity demand in buildings. This paper provides a holistic review of (1) data-driven energy flexibility key performance indicators (KPIs) for buildings in the operational phase and (2) open datasets that can be used for testing energy flexibility KPIs. The review identifies a total of 81 data-driven KPIs from 91 recent publications. These KPIs were categorized and analyzed according to their type, complexity, scope, key stakeholders, data requirement, baseline requirement, resolution, and popularity. Moreover, 330 building datasets were collected and evaluated. Of those, 16 were deemed adequate to feature building performing demand response or building-to-grid (B2G) services. The DSM strategy, building scope, grid type, control strategy, needed data features, and usability of these selected 16 datasets were analyzed. This review reveals future opportunities to address limitations in the existing literature: (1) developing new data-driven methodologies to specifically evaluate different energy flexibility strategies and B2G services of existing buildings; (2) developing baseline-free KPIs that could be calculated from easily accessible building sensors and meter data; (3) devoting non-engineering efforts to promote building energy flexibility, such as designing utility programs, standardizing energy flexibility quantification and verification processes; and (4) curating datasets with proper description for energy flexibility assessments.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, 4 table

    MLP: a MATLAB toolbox for rapid and reliable auditory threshold estimation

    In this paper, we present MLP, a MATLAB toolbox enabling auditory thresholds estimation via the adaptive Maximum Likelihood procedure proposed by David Green (1990, 1993). This adaptive procedure is particularly appealing for those psychologists that need to estimate thresholds with a good degree of accuracy and in a short time. Together with a description of the toolbox, the current text provides an introduction to the threshold estimation theory and a theoretical explanation of the maximum likelihood adaptive procedure. MLP comes with a graphical interface and it is provided with several built-in, classic psychoacoustics experiments ready to use at a mouse click

    How acceptable are antiretrovirals for the prevention of sexually transmitted HIV? A review of research on the acceptability of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis and treatment as prevention

    Recent research has demonstrated how antiretrovirals (ARVs) could be effective in the prevention of sexually transmitted HIV. We review research on the acceptability of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment as prevention (TasP) for HIV prevention amongst potential users. We consider with whom, where and in what context this research has been conducted, how acceptability has been approached, and what research gaps remain. Findings from 33 studies show a lack of TasP research, PrEP studies which have focused largely on men who have sex with men (MSM) in a US context, and varied measures of acceptability. In order to identify when, where and for whom PrEP and TasP would be most appropriate and effective, research is needed in five areas: acceptability of TasP to people living with HIV; motivation for PrEP use and adherence; current perceptions and management of risk; the impact of broader social and structural factors; and consistent definition and operationalisation of acceptability which moves beyond adherence

    Approximation algorithms for fault tolerant facility allocation

    Given nf sites, each equipped with one facility, and n c cities, fault tolerant facility location (FTFL) [K. Jain and V. V. Vazirani, APPROX '00: Proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Approximation Algorithms for Combinatorial Optimization, Spinger, New York, 2000, pp. 177-183] requires computing a minimum-cost connection scheme such that each city connects to a specified number of facilities. When each city connects to exactly one facility, FTFL becomes the classical uncapacitated facility location problem (UFL) that is well-known NP hard. The current best solution to FTFL admits an approximation ratio 1.7245 due to Byrka, Srinivasan, and Swamy applying the dependent rounding technique announced recently [Proceedings of IPCO, 2010, pp. 244-257], which improves the ratio 2.076 obtained by Swamy and Shmoys based on LP rounding [ACM Trans. Algorithms, 4 (2008), pp. 1-27]. In this paper, we study a variant of the FTFL problem, namely, fault tolerant facility allocation (FTFA), as another generalization of UFL by allowing each site to hold multiple facilities and show that we can obtain better solutions for this problem. We first give two algorithms with 1.81 and 1.61 approximation ratios in time complexity O(mRlogm) and O(Rn3), respectively, where R is the maximum number of facilities required by any city, m = nfnc, and n = max{ nf, nc}. Instead of applying the dual-fitting technique that reduces the dual problem's solution to fit the original problem as used in the literature [K. Jain et al., Journal of the ACM, 50 (2003), pp. 795-824; K. Jain, M. Mahdian, and A. Saberi, STOC'02: Proceedings of the 34th Annual ACM Symposium on the Theory of Computing, New York, 2002, pp. 731-740; A. Saberi et al., Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization: Algorithms and Techniques, Springer, New York, 2001, pp. 127-137], we propose a method called inverse dual-fitting that alters the original problem to fit the dual solution and show that this method is more effective for obtaining solutions of multifactor approximation. We show that applying inverse dual-fitting and factor-revealing techniques our second algorithm is also (1.11,1.78)- And (1,2)-approximation simultaneously. These results can be further used to achieve solutions of 1.52-approximation to FTFA and 4-approximation to the fault tolerant k-facility allocation problem in which the total number of facilities is bounded by k.     Uso da acupressão para minimizar desconfortos na gestação

    Objetivo: Descrever respostas emitidas por gestantes, quanto à melhora dos desconfortos gravídicos após aplicação da técnica da acupressão.Método: Estudo qualitativo e descritivo desenvolvido com 15 gestantes entre novembro de 2013 e fevereiro de 2014 em uma Unidade Básica de Saúde de Natal-RN, Brasil. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevista não estruturada, e os depoimentos, depois de transcritos e tratados de acordo com a proposta operativa de Minayo, foram lidos criteriosamente, comparados entre si e organizados em dois grupos.Resultados: As categorias suscitadas foram: Repercussões positivas da acupressão e Recomendações do uso da acupressão. Segundo as gestantes, os desconfortos da gravidez como câimbras, cansaço nos membros inferiores, lombalgia e cefaleia diminuíram com o uso da acupressão.Conclusões: Baseado nos resultados obtidos, a acupressão deve ser introduzida pela(o) enfermeira(o) em consultas pré-natais como recurso terapêutico em prol da obtenção do bem-estar da gestante.Palavras-chave: Enfermagem obstétrica.     Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in Iranian Professional Drivers: Results from a Population Based Study of 12,138 Men

    It is evident that professional driving is associated with substantial changes in lifestyle habits. Professional drivers are prone to metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its complications because their working environment is characterized by numerous stress factors such as lack of physical activity due to working in a fixed position, disruption in diet, and irregular sleep habits. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of MetS among long distance drivers residing in West Azerbaijan province in Iran.To assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among professional long distance drivers, 12138 participants were enrolled in this cross sectional study. The MetS was defined using International Diabetes Federation criteria.Among12138 participants, 3697 subjects found to be MetS. The crude and age-adjusted rates of MetS were 30.5% and 32.4% respectively. Based on Body mass index (BMI), 5027 subjects (41.4%) were overweight (BMI ≥25.01–30 kg/m2), and 2592 (21.3%) were obese (BMI ≥30.01 kg/m2). The presence of central obesity was more common than other components. The associations of MetS with BMI, pack-year smoking, age, weekly driving duration and driving experiences were significant in the logistic regression. By increasing BMI, pack-year smoking, age, weekly driving duration and driving experiences, odds ratio of MetS was increased.The study suggests that MetS has become a noteworthy health problem among Iranian long distance drivers. This might be due to the following facts: sitting in a fixed position for long hours while working, cigarette smoking, job stress, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. Educational programs should be established for promoting healthy lifestyle and also for early detection and appropriate intervention

    Twisted characters and holomorphic symmetries

    We consider holomorphic twists of arbitrary supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Working in the BV formalism, we rederive classical results characterizing the holomorphic twist of chiral and vector supermultiplets, computing the twist explicitly as a family over the space of nilpotent supercharges in minimal supersymmetry. The BV formalism allows one to work with or without auxiliary fields, according to preference; for chiral superfields, we show that the result of the twist is an identical BV theory, the holomorphic βγ\beta\gamma system with superpotential, independent of whether or not auxiliary fields are included. We compute the character of local operators in this holomorphic theory, demonstrating agreement of the free local operators with the usual index of free fields. The local operators with superpotential are computed via a spectral sequence, and are shown to agree with functions on a formal mapping space into the derived critical locus of the superpotential. We consider the holomorphic theory on various geometries, including Hopf manifolds and products of arbitrary pairs of Riemann surfaces, and offer some general remarks on dimensional reductions of holomorphic theories along the (n1)(n-1)-sphere to topological quantum mechanics. We also study an infinite-dimensional enhancement of the flavor symmetry in this example, to a recently-studied central extension of the derived holomorphic functions with values in the original Lie algebra that generalizes the familiar Kac--Moody enhancement in two-dimensional chiral theories
