    An airport wind shear detection and warning system using Doppler radar: A feasibility study

    A feasibility study was conducted to determine whether ground based Doppler radar could measure the wind along the path of an approaching aircraft with sufficient accuracy to predict aircraft performance. Forty-three PAR approaches were conducted, with 16 examined in detail. In each, Doppler derived longitudinal winds were compared to aircraft measured winds; in approximately 75 percent of the cases, the Doppler and aircraft winds were in acceptable agreement. In the remaining cases, errors may have been due to a lack of Doppler resolution, a lack of co-location of the two sampling volumes, the presence of eddy or vortex like disturbances within the pulse volume, or the presence of point targets in antenna side lobes. It was further concluded that shrouding techniques would have reduced the side lobe problem.     A Simulation Model Articulation of the REA Ontology

    This paper demonstrates how the REA enterprise ontology can be used to construct simulation models for business processes, value chains and collaboration spaces in supply chains. These models support various high-level and operational management simulation applications, e.g. the analysis of enterprise sustainability and day-to-day planning. First, the basic constructs of the REA ontology and the ExSpect modelling language for simulation are introduced. Second, collaboration space, value chain and business process models and their conceptual dependencies are shown, using the ExSpect language. Third, an exhibit demonstrates the use of value chain models in predicting the financial performance of an enterprise

    Barrier and internal wave contributions to the quantum probability density and flux in light heavy-ion elastic scattering

    We investigate the properties of the optical model wave function for light heavy-ion systems where absorption is incomplete, such as α+40\alpha + ^{40}Ca and α+16\alpha + ^{16}O around 30 MeV incident energy. Strong focusing effects are predicted to occur well inside the nucleus, where the probability density can reach values much higher than that of the incident wave. This focusing is shown to be correlated with the presence at back angles of a strong enhancement in the elastic cross section, the so-called ALAS (anomalous large angle scattering) phenomenon; this is substantiated by calculations of the quantum probability flux and of classical trajectories. To clarify this mechanism, we decompose the scattering wave function and the associated probability flux into their barrier and internal wave contributions within a fully quantal calculation. Finally, a calculation of the divergence of the quantum flux shows that when absorption is incomplete, the focal region gives a sizeable contribution to nonelastic processes.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures.     Health System Performance for the High-Need Patient: A Look at Access to Care and Patient Care Experiences

    Achieving a high-performing health system will require improving outcomes and reducing costs for high-need, high-cost patients—those who use the most health care services and account for a disproportionately large share of health care spending. Goal: To compare the health care experiences of adults with high needs—those with three or more chronic diseases and a functional limitation in the ability to care for themselves or perform routine daily tasks—to all adults and to those with multiple chronic diseases but no functional limitations. Methods: Analysis of data from the 2009–2011 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. Key findings: High-need adults were more likely to report having an unmet medical need and less likely to report having good patient–provider communication. High-need adults reported roughly similar ease of obtaining specialist referrals as other adults and greater likelihood of having a medical home. While adults with private health insurance reported the fewest unmet needs overall, privately insured highneed adults reported the greatest difficulties having their needs met. Conclusion: The health care system needs to work better for the highest-need, most-complex patients. This study's findings highlight the importance of tailoring interventions to address their need

    HST images and properties of the most distant radio galaxies

    We present Hubble Space Telescope images of 11 high redshift radio galaxies (between z=2.3z=2.3 and z=3.6z=3.6). The galaxies were observed with the WFPC2 camera in a broad band filter (F606W or F707W, roughly equivalent to V or R-band), for 2 orbits each. We find that on the scale of the HST observations there is a wide variety of morphological structures of the hosting galaxies: most objects have a clumpy, irregular appearance, consisting of a bright nucleus and a number of smaller components, suggestive of merging systems. Some observed structures could be due (at least partly) to the presence of dust distributed through the galaxies. The UV continuum emission is generally elongated and aligned with the axis of the radio sources, however the characteristics of the ``alignment effect'' differ from case to case, suggesting that the phenomenon cannot be explained by a single physical mechanism. We compare the properties of our radio galaxies with those of the UV dropout galaxies and conclude that (i) the most massive radio galaxies may well evolve from an aggregate of UV dropout galaxies and (ii) high redshift radio galaxies probably evolve into present day brightest cluster galaxies.Comment: 22 pages, 30 figures, accepted by A&

    This paper develops an optimal control framework to investigate the introduction of sterile type mosquitoes to reduce the overal moquito population. As is well known, mosquitoes are vectors of disease. For instance the WHO lists, among other diseases, Malaria, Dengue Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Yellow Fever, Chikungunya Fever and Zika.     Chemical abundances and winds of massive stars in M31: a B-type supergiant and a WC star in OB10

    We present high quality spectroscopic data for two massive stars in the OB10 association of M31, OB10-64 (B0Ia) and OB10-WR1 (WC6). Medium resolution spectra of both stars were obtained using the ISIS spectrograph on the William Hershel Telescope. This is supplemented with HST-STIS UV spectroscopy and KeckI HIRES data for OB10-64. A non-LTE model atmosphere and abundance analysis for OB10-64 is presented indicating that this star has similar photospheric CNO, Mg and Si abundances as solar neighbourhood massive stars. A wind analysis of this early B-type supergiant reveals a mass-loss rate of M_dot=1.6x10^-6 M_solar/yr,and v_infty=1650 km/s. The corresponding wind momentum is in good agreement with the wind momentum -- luminosity relationship found for Galactic early B supergiants. Observations of OB10W-R1 are analysed using a non-LTE, line-blanketed code, to reveal approximate stellar parameters of log L/L_solar \~ 5.7, T~75 kK, v_infty ~ 3000 km/s, M_dot ~ 10^-4.3 M_solar/yr, adopting a clumped wind with a filling factor of 10%. Quantitative comparisons are made with the Galactic WC6 star HD92809 (WR23) revealing that OB10-WR1 is 0.4 dex more luminous, though it has a much lower C/He ratio (~0.1 versus 0.3 for HD92809). Our study represents the first detailed, chemical model atmosphere analysis for either a B-type supergiant or a WR star in Andromeda, and shows the potential of how such studies can provide new information on the chemical evolution of galaxies and the evolution of massive stars in the local Universe.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS accepted version, some minor revision

    Experiences of Pain in Hospitalized Children During Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Therapy

    Children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are vulnerable to pain due to the intensity and toxicity of this treatment. An instrumental case study design of two qualitative phases was conducted to examine the pain experiences of hospitalized children during HSCT therapy and how contextual factors related to the pediatric HSCT environment influenced their experience of pain. The Social Communication Model of Pain provided the conceptual framework for the study. In Phase 1, semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of a child undergoing HSCT therapy at two time points. Phase 2 was conducted as a naturalistic observational study of the clinical care provided to children and semi-structured interviews with health-care providers. Children experienced complex and multifaceted pain with physical, psychological, and contextual contributors. Understanding the many factors contributing to the child’s pain experience can inform strategies to improve the management of pain during HSCT therapy. </jats:p
