Measurements of the effect of horizontal variability of atmospheric backscatter on dial measurements

    Get PDF
The horizontal variability of atmospheric backscatter may have a substantial effect on how Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) data must be taken and analyzed. To minimize errors, lidar pulse pairs are taken with time separations which are short compared to the time scales associated with variations in atmospheric backscatter. To assess the atmospheric variability for time scales which are long compared to the lidar pulse repetition rate, the variance of the lidar return signal in a given channel can be computed. The variances of the on-line, off-line, and ration of the on-line to off-line signals at given altitudes obtained with the dual solid-state Alexandrite laser system were calculated. These evaluations were made for both down-looking aircraft and up-looking ground-based lidar data. Data were taken with 200 microsecond separation between on-line and off-line laser pulses, 30 m altitude resolution, 5 Hz repetition rate, and the signal were normalized for outgoing laser energy

Real-time atmospheric absorption spectra for in-flight tuning of an airborne dial system

Real-time measurements of atmospheric absorption spectra are displayed and used to precisely calibrate and fix the frequency of an Alexandrite laser to specific oxygen absorption features for airborne Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) measurements of atmospheric pressure and temperature. The DIAL system used contains two narrowband tunable Alexandrite lasers: one is electronically scanned to tune to oxygen absorption features for on-line signals while the second is used to obtain off-line (nonabsorbed) atmospheric return signals. The lidar operator may select the number of shots to be averaged, the altitude, and altitude interval over which the signals are averaged using single key stroke commands. The operator also determines exactly which oxygen absorption lines are scanned by comparing the line spacings and relative strengths with known line parameters, thus calibrating the laser wavelength readout. The system was used successfully to measure the atmospheric pressure profile on the first flights of this lidar, November 20, and December 9, 1985, aboard the NASA Wallops Electra aircraft

Airborne Lidar measurements of the atmospheric pressure profile with tunable Alexandrite lasers

    Get PDF
The first remote measurements of the atmospheric pressure profile made from an airborne platform are described. The measurements utilize a differential absorption lidar and tunable solid state Alexandrite lasers. The pressure measurement technique uses a high resolution oxygen A band where the absorption is highly pressure sensitive due to collision broadening. Absorption troughs and regions of minimum absorption were used between pairs of stongly absorption lines for these measurements. The trough technique allows the measurement to be greatly desensitized to the effects of laser frequency instabilities. The lidar system was set up to measure pressure with the on-line laser tuned to the absorption trough at 13147.3/cm and with the reference laser tuned to a nonabsorbing frequency near 13170.0/cm. The lidar signal returns were sampled with a 200 range gate (30 vertical resoltion) and averaged over 100 shots

Spatial distribution of local density of states in vicinity of impurity on semiconductor surface

We present the results of detailed theoretical investigations of changes in local density of total electronic surface states in 2D anisotropic atomic semiconductor lattice in vicinity of impurity atom for a wide range of applied bias voltage. We have found that taking into account changes in density of continuous spectrum states leads to the formation of a downfall at the particular value of applied voltage when we are interested in the density of states above the impurity atom or even to a series of downfalls for the fixed value of the distance from the impurity. The behaviour of local density of states with increasing of the distance from impurity along the chain differs from behaviour in the direction perpendicular to the chain.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Competing forces of withdrawal and disease avoidance in the risk networks of people who inject drugs

We analyze a network of needle-sharing ties among 117 people who inject drugs (PWID) in rural Puerto Rico, using exponential random graph modeling to examine whether network members engage in partner restriction to lower their risk of contracting HIV or hepatitis C (HCV), or in informed altruism to prevent others from contracting these infections. Although sharing of used syringes is a significant risk factor for transmission of these diseases among PWID, we find limited evidence for partner restriction or informed altruism in the network of reported needle-sharing ties. We find however that sharing of needles is strongly reciprocal, and individuals with higher injection frequency are more likely to have injected with a used needle. Drawing on our ethnographic work, we discuss how the network structures we observe may relate to a decision-making rationale focused on avoiding withdrawal sickness, which leads to risk-taking behaviors in this poor, rural context where economic considerations often lead PWID to cooperate in the acquisition and use of drugs

The topic of this paper is the urban space occupation and its investigation in the theoretical and legal aspects, establishing a new social urban class that has grown up by the absence of habitation’s policies. The peasant migration and a consequently lack of regular dwellings, have became in a major social and environmental problem nowadays. It makes use of this category to promote the assessment of the urban and environmental laws under the land irregular occupation and sustainable cities policies, as fundiary regularization. As an example Curitiba metropolitan area formation, it’s possible to see that the major actual problem there’s its origin in the past, but there are others that emerged since the city development, unbalanced, that wasn’t studied and couldn’t see a new social phenomena growing. The new social group that have established  in illegal and irregular lands, in poor and unhealthy conditions, is originated by the inefficacy of public policies and specifically laws, that intended to help this demand, as the Law 11.977/09, whom has not gotten  supply the Curitiba metropolitan area population necessities.O presente trabalho tem como tema a ocupação do espaço urbano com a investigação de seus aspectos teórico-jurídicos, visando demonstrar a formação de uma nova classe urbana, originada na ausência de políticas habitacionais e urbanas.

In this paper we give some examples of almost para-hyperhermitian structures on the tangent bundle of an almost product manifold, on the product manifold M×RM\times\mathbb{R}, where MM is a manifold endowed with a mixed 3-structure and on the circle bundle over a manifold with a mixed 3-structure.Comment: 10 pages; This paper has been presented in the "4th German-Romanian Seminar on Geometry" Dortmund, Germany, 15-18 July 200

Influence of the Characteristics of the STM-tip on the Electroluminescence Spectra

We analyze the influence of the characteristics of the STM-tip (applied voltage, tip radius) on the electroluminescence spectra from an STM-tip-induced quantum dot taking into account the many-body effects. We find that positions of electroluminescence peaks, attributed to the electron-hole recombination in the quantum dot, are very sensitive to the shape and size of the confinement potential as determined by the tip radius and the applied voltage. A critical value of the tip radius is found, at which the luminescence peak positions as a function of the tip radius manifest a transition from decreasing behavior for smaller radii to increasing behavior for larger radii. We find that this critical value of the tip radius is related to the confinement in the lateral and normal direction.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

Near-Threshold eta Meson Production in Proton-Proton Collisions

The production of eta mesons has been measured in the proton-proton interaction close to the reaction threshold using the COSY-11 internal facility at the cooler synchrotron COSY. Total cross sections were determined for eight different excess energies in the range from 0.5 MeV to 5.4 MeV. The energy dependence of the total cross section is well described by the available phase-space volume weighted by FSI factors for the proton-proton and proton-eta pairs.Comment: 9 pages, 1 table, 5 figure
