    Recycled Concrete Aggregates in Roadways: A Laboratory Examination of Self-Cementing Characteristics

    This paper examines the self-cementing phenomenon of the road construction material known as recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Two RCA types were selected as study materials: (1) high-grade RCA (HRCA), a quality RCA manufactured from relatively high-strength concrete structures; and (2) road base RCA (RBRCA), a high-grade RCA blend combined with brick and general clean rubble (road base material). Laboratory tests were performed to obtain the unconfined compressive strength, indirect tension dynamic modulus, and resilient modulus of the test samples to examine their hardening characteristics when subjected to varying curing periods. These tests were performed in conjunction with microstructure analyses from X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques. The HRCA samples, which were prepared and subjected to varying curing conditions, transformed from an initially unbound material into a bound (fully stabilized) material. The results of XRD and SEM analyses clearly demonstrate that secondary hydration occurred. The RBRCA samples were able to maintain their unbound granular properties, with nonsignificant self-cementing, thus supporting the hypothesis that the mixing of nonactive materials such as bricks and clean rubble into RCA will lessen the tendency of RCA toward self-cementing

    The blockchain: a new framework for robotic swarm systems

    Swarms of robots will revolutionize many industrial applications, from targeted material delivery to precision farming. However, several of the heterogeneous characteristics that make them ideal for certain future applications --- robot autonomy, decentralized control, collective emergent behavior, etc. --- hinder the evolution of the technology from academic institutions to real-world problems. Blockchain, an emerging technology originated in the Bitcoin field, demonstrates that by combining peer-to-peer networks with cryptographic algorithms a group of agents can reach an agreement on a particular state of affairs and record that agreement without the need for a controlling authority. The combination of blockchain with other distributed systems, such as robotic swarm systems, can provide the necessary capabilities to make robotic swarm operations more secure, autonomous, flexible and even profitable. This work explains how blockchain technology can provide innovative solutions to four emergent issues in the swarm robotics research field. New security, decision making, behavior differentiation and business models for swarm robotic systems are described by providing case scenarios and examples. Finally, limitations and possible future problems that arise from the combination of these two technologies are described

    Several aspects of the 4d imprint of the 5d bulk Weyl radiation are investigated within a recently proposed model solution. It is shown that the solution has a number of physically interesting properties. The constraints on the model imposed by combined measurements of rotation curve and lensing are discussed.     A 30-Year Worldwide Research Productivity of Scientific Publication in Full-Endoscopic Decompression Spine Surgery: Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis

    Objective The ever-growing number of articles related to full-endoscopic spine surgery published in the last few decades presents a challenge which is perplexing and time-consuming in identifying the current research status. The study aims to identify and analyze the most cited works related to full-endoscopic decompression spine surgery, compare the articles published by different publishers and area, and show the current publication status of full-endoscopic research. Methods Using Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer, we analyzed the bibliometric data selected from the Web of Science database between 1992 and 2022. Spine has the highest H-index with the most-cited journal in the field of full-endoscopic decompression spine surgery. China ranked as the most productive country, whereas the most cited with high H-index papers came from South Korea. For the author analysis, Yeung AT, Ruetten S, Hoogland T, Ahn Y, Choi G, and Mayer HM were the most impactful authors in the global and local citations. The most productive organization is Wooridul Spine Hospital. Conclusion The bibliometric study showed a growing trend of research on full-endoscopic decompression spine surgery over the past 30 years. It has demonstrated that there is a significant increase in the number of authors, institutions, and internationally collaborated countries. However, the quality of studies is still low, and the lack of high-quality clinical evidence and the trend of general journal submissions has somewhat affected the quality of endoscopy journals in recent years

    A reference activity model for smart factory design and improvement

    Smart manufacturing systems (SMSs) are envisioned to contain highly automated and IT-driven production systems. To address the complexity that arises in such systems, a standard and holistic model for describing its activities and their interrelationships is needed. This paper introduces a factory design and improvement (FDI) activity model and illustrates a case study of FDI in an electromechanical component factory. In essence, FDI is a reference activity model that encompasses a range of manufacturing system activities for designing and improving a factory during its initial development and also its operational phases. The FDI model shows not only the dependency between activities and manufacturing control levels but also the pieces of information and software functions each activity relies on. We envision that the availability of these pieces of information in digital form to integrate across the software functions will increase the agility of factory design and improvement projects.     Abstract: With the rapid technology changes in today\u27s world companies that depend on technology need to strategically choose and plan their technology path in order to maintain competitive advantage and avoid any future problems. In this case we have a company that uses PC computers as a backbone of the information technology and main medium for their business operations. Due to current economical changes, and the obsolescence of the current generation of PC computers the company has decided to upgrade their current computer system in order to stay current with technology and also incorporate the technology with the corporate strategy. In the past they just purchased computers from random vendors and each department had their own preference. This caused a big problem for the company\u27s internal technical support team because they had to deal with multiple vendors and multiple computing platforms. This caused software and hardware incompatibility and some systems worked better than others. The board of directors has identified this as a problem and wishes to replace the current computer systems from one selected computer vendor that will meet their expectations. Their strategy encompasses a standardized computer system with well-defined rules for support and maintenance. Our team assessed the company\u27s expectations and did a computer vendor research in order to meet company expectations and find the best possible solution for the give situation. We have identified two major orientations of our client and five possible vendors that we will explore using pair-wise comparisons. Our client intends to replace their current diverse computer system with a single vendor platform. This is going to span through the next couple years and making the right decision is imperative.
