Ultrashort PW laser pulse interaction with target and ion acceleration
We present the experimental results on ion acceleration by petawatt
femtosecond laser solid interaction and explore strategies to enhance ion
energy. The irradiation of micrometer thick (0.2 - 6.0 micron) Al foils with a
virtually unexplored intensity regime (8x10^19 W/cm^2 - 1x10^21 W/cm^2)
resulting in ion acceleration along the rear and the front surface target
normal direction is investigated. The maximum energy of protons and carbon
ions, obtained at optimised laser intensity condition (by varying laser energy
or focal spot size), exhibit a rapid intensity scaling as I^0.8 along the rear
surface target normal direction and I^0.6 along the front surface target normal
direction. It was found that proton energy scales much faster with laser energy
rather than the laser focal spot size. Additionally, the ratio of maximum ion
energy along the both directions is found to be constant for the broad range of
target thickness and laser intensities. A proton flux is strongly dominated in
the forward direction at relatively low laser intensities. Increasing the laser
intensity results in the gradual increase in the backward proton flux and leads
to almost equalisation of ion flux in both directions in the entire energy
range. These experimental findings may open new perspectives for applications.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 3rd EAAC worksho
Improved Reduced Order Mechanical Model and Finite Element Analysis of Three-Dimensional Deformations of Epithelial Tissues
In this chapter, we analyse non-uniform bending of single-layer cell tissues—epithelia, surrounding organs throughout the body. Dimensionally reduced model is suggested, which is equivalent to membranes with bending stiffness: the total elastic energy of the tissue is a combination of stretching and bending energies. The energy, suggested in this chapter, is a piecewise function, the branches of which correspond to a specific deformation regime: compression, pure bending and stretch

The moral rights of the named author(s) have been asserted. The nucleolus is the hallmark of nuclear compartmentalization and has been shown to exert multiple roles in cellular metabolism besides its main function as the place of rRNA synthesis and assembly of ribosomes. Nucleolar proteins dynamically localize and accumulate in this nuclear compartment relative to the surrounding nucleoplasm. In this study, we have assessed the molecular requirements that are necessary and sufficient for the localization and accumulation of peptides and proteins inside the nucleoli of living cells. The data showed that positively charged peptide entities composed of arginines alone and with an isoelectric point at and above 12.6 are necessary and sufficient for mediating significant nucleolar accumulation. A threshold of 6 arginines is necessary for peptides to accumulate in nucleoli, but already 4 arginines are sufficient when fused within 15 amino acid residues of a nuclear localization signal of a protein. Using a pH sensitive dye, we found that the nucleolar compartment is particularly acidic when compared to the surrounding nucleoplasm and, hence, provides the ideal electrochemical environment to bind poly-arginine containing proteins. In fact, we found that oligo-arginine peptides and GFP fusions bind RNA in vitro. Consistent with RNA being the main binding partner for arginines in the nucleolus, we found that the same principles apply to cells from insects to man, indicating that this mechanism is highly conserved throughout evolution.RMM was supported by a post-doctoral grant from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal (SFRH-BPD-66611–2009). Explosions of water clusters in intense laser fields
Energetic, highly-charged oxygen ions, (), are copiously
produced upon laser field-induced disassembly of highly-charged water clusters,
and , 60, that are formed by seeding high-pressure
helium or argon with water vapor. clusters (n40000) formed under
similar experimental conditions are found undergo disassembly in the Coulomb
explosion regime, with the energies of ions showing a
dependence. Water clusters, which are argued to be considerably smaller in
size, should also disassemble in the same regime, but the energies of fragment
O ions are found to depend linearly on which, according to
prevailing wisdom, ought to be a signature of hydrodynamic expansion that is
expected of much larger clusters. The implication of these observations on our
understanding of the two cluster explosion regimes, Coulomb explosion and
hydrodynamic expansion, is discussed. Our results indicate that charge state
dependences of ion energy do not constitute an unambiguous experimental
signature of cluster explosion regime.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.

Mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQR1 selectively protects MDR (Pgp 170)-negative cells against oxidative stress
AbstractA conjugate of plastoquinone with decylrhodamine 19 (SkQR1) selectively accumulates in mitochondria of normal and tumor cells. SkQR1 protected the cellular pool of reduced glutathione under oxidative stress. Overexpression of P-glycoprotein (Pgp 170) multidrug resistance pump strongly suppresses accumulation of SkQR1. The inhibitors of Pgp 170 stimulate accumulation of SkQR1 in various cell lines indicating that SkQR1 is a substrate of Pgp 170. The protective effect of SkQR1 against oxidative stress is diminished in the cells overexpressing Pgp 170. It is suggested that mitochondria-targeted antioxidants could selectively protect normal (Pgp 170-negative) cells against the toxic effect of anti-cancer treatments related to oxidative stress
