    Tunneling resonances in quantum dots: Coulomb interaction modifies the width

    Single-electron tunneling through a zero-dimensional state in an asymmetric double-barrier resonant-tunneling structure is studied. The broadening of steps in the II--VV characteristics is found to strongly depend on the polarity of the applied bias voltage. Based on a qualitative picture for the finite-life-time broadening of the quantum dot states and a quantitative comparison of the experimental data with a non-equilibrium transport theory, we identify this polarity dependence as a clear signature of Coulomb interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Glass transition of binary mixtures of dipolar particles in two dimensions

    We study the glass transition of binary mixtures of dipolar particles in two dimensions within the framework of mode-coupling theory, focusing in particular on the influence of composition changes. In a first step, we demonstrate that the experimental system of K\"onig et al. [Eur. Phys. J. E 18, 287 (2005)] is well described by point dipoles through a comparison between the experimental partial structure factors and those from our Monte Carlo simulation. For such a mixture of point particles we show that there is always a plasticization effect, i.e. a stabilization of the liquid state due to mixing, in contrast to binary hard disks. We demonstrate that the predicted plasticization effect is in qualitative agreement with experimental results.     CD44 expression positively correlates with Foxp3 expression and suppressive function of CD4+ Treg cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>CD4<sup>+</sup>CD25<sup>+ </sup>regulatory T (T<sub>reg</sub>) cells develop in the thymus and can suppress T cell proliferation, modulated by Foxp3 and cytokines; however, the relevance of CD44 in T<sub>reg </sub>cell development is less clear. To address this issue, we analyzed Foxp3 expression in CD44<sup>+ </sup>T<sub>reg </sub>cells by using multiple parameters, measured the levels of the immunoregulatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-10 in various thymocyte subsets, and determined the suppressor activity in different splenic T<sub>reg </sub>cell populations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Within mouse thymocytes, we detected T<sub>reg </sub>cells with two novel phenotypes, namely the CD4<sup>+</sup>CD8<sup>-</sup>CD25<sup>+</sup>CD44<sup>+ </sup>and CD4<sup>+</sup>CD8<sup>-</sup>CD25<sup>+</sup>CD44<sup>- </sup>staining features. Additional multi-parameter analyses at the single-cell and molecular levels suggested to us that CD44 expression positively correlated with Foxp3 expression in thymocytes, the production of IL-10, and T<sub>reg </sub>activity in splenic CD4<sup>+</sup>CD25<sup>+ </sup>T cells. This suppressive effect of T<sub>reg </sub>cells on T cell proliferation could be blocked by using anti-IL-10 neutralizing antibodies. In addition, CD4<sup>+</sup>CD25<sup>+</sup>CD44<sup>+ </sup>T<sub>reg </sub>cells expressed higher levels of IL-10 and were more potent in suppressing effector T cell proliferation than were CD4<sup>+</sup>CD25<sup>+</sup>CD44<sup>- </sup>cells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study indicates the presence of two novel phenotypes of T<sub>reg </sub>cells in the thymus, the functional relevance of CD44 in defining T<sub>reg </sub>cell subsets, and the role of both IL-10 and Foxp3 in modulating the function of T<sub>reg </sub>cells.</p> <p>Reviewers</p> <p>This article was reviewed by Dr. M.     Neumayer III and Kohnen Station in Antarctica operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute

    The Alfred Wegener Institute operates two stations in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The German overwintering station Neumayer III is located on the Ekström Ice Shelf at 70°40’S and 08°16’W and is the logistics base for three long-term observatories (meteorology, air chemistry and geophysics) and nearby research activities. Due to the vicinity to the coast (ca. 20 km from the ice shelf edge), the Neumayer III Station is the junction for many German Antarctic expeditions, especially as the starting point for the supply traverse for the second German station Kohnen.The summer station Kohnen is located about 600 km from the coast and 750 km from Neumayer III Station on the Antarctic plateau at 75°S and 00°04’E. It was erected as the base for the deep-drilling ice core project, which took place between 2001 and 2006. Since then Kohnen Station is used as a logistics base for different research projects

    Treatment with an Anti-CD44v10-Specific Antibody Inhibits the Onset of Alopecia Areata in C3H/HeJ Mice

    A murine CD44v10-neutralizing antibody has been reported to impair delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions. Because alopecia areata is characterized by a delayed-type hypersensitivity-like T cell mediated immune response, we addressed the question whether an anti-CD44v10-antibody influences the onset of alopecia areata. Therefore, we used the C3H/HeJ mouse model with the induction of alopecia areata in unaffected mice by the grafting of lesional alopecia areata mouse skin. Six grafted mice were injected (intraperitoneally) with anti-CD44v10, six grafted mice with anti-CD44standard, and six with phosphate-buffered saline only. After 11 wk phosphate-buffered saline injected animals on average had developed alopecia areata on 36.8% of their body. The onset of hair loss was slightly delayed and its extent reduced to 17.2% of their body in anti-CD44standard-treated mice. By contrast, five of six anti-CD44v10-treated mice did not show any hair loss and one mouse developed alopecia areata on only 1% of the body. Immunohistochemical examination revealed a marked reduction of perifollicular CD8+ lymphocytes and, to a lesser degree, CD4+ cells as well as a decreased expression of major histocompatibility complex class I on hair follicle epithelium in anti-CD44v10-treated mice as compared with phosphate-buffered saline or anti-CD44 standard-treated mice. Our data show that anti-CD44v10 is able to inhibit the onset of alopecia areata in C3H/HeJ mice. This might be accomplished by an anti-CD44v10-triggered impairment of immune cell homing (e.g., CD8+ T cells), resulting in a decrease of their number in target tissues

    The GFZ GRACE RL06 Monthly Gravity Field Time Series: Processing Details and Quality Assessment

    Time-variable gravity field models derived from observations of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, whose science operations phase ended in June 2017 after more than 15 years, enabled a multitude of studies of Earth’s surface mass transport processes and climate change. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), routinely processing such monthly gravity fields as part of the GRACE Science Data System, has reprocessed the complete GRACE mission and released an improved GFZ GRACE RL06 monthly gravity field time series. This study provides an insight into the processing strategy of GFZ RL06 which has been considerably changed with respect to previous GFZ GRACE releases, and modifications relative to the precursor GFZ RL05a are described. The quality of the RL06 gravity field models is analyzed and discussed both in the spectral and spatial domain in comparison to the RL05a time series. All results indicate significant improvements of about 40% in terms of reduced noise. It is also shown that the GFZ RL06 time series is a step forward in terms of consistency, and that errors of the gravity field coefficients are more realistic. These findings are confirmed as well by independent validation of the monthly GRACE models, as done in this work by means of ocean bottom pressure in situ observations and orbit tests with the GOCE satellite.
