Triggering of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes: PMT trigger rates due to night-sky photons
Imaging air Cherenkov telescopes are usually triggered on a coincidence of
two or sometimes more pixels, with discriminator thresholds in excess of 20
photoelectrons applied for each pixel. These thresholds required to suppress
night-sky background are significantly higher than expected on the basis of a
Poisson distribution in the number of night-sky photoelectrons generated during
the characteristic signal integration time.
We studied noise trigger rates under controlled conditions using an
artificial background light source. Large tails in the PMT amplitude response
to single photoelectrons are identified as a dominant contribution to noise
triggers. The rate of such events is very sensitive to PMT operating

An optical linewidth study of a chromoprotein-C-phycocyanin in a low-temperature glass
The temperature dependence of spectral holes burnt into a phycocyanin-doped ethylene glycol/water glass is investigated in the temperature range between 1.5 and 15 K. The data are well described by a power law with an exponent of 1.16 ± 0.1. Chromoproteins thus behave very much the same as glasses doped with small impurity molecules

Electronic Structure and Lattice dynamics of NaFeAs
The similarity of the electronic structures of NaFeAs and other Fe pnictides
has been demonstrated on the basis of first-principle calculations. The global
double-degeneracy of electronic bands along X-M and R-A direction indicates the
instability of Fe pnictides and is explained on the basis of a tight-binding
model. The de Haas-van Alphen parameters for the Fermi surface (FS) of NaFeAs
have been calculated. A spin density wave (SDW)
instead of a charge density wave (CDW) ground state is predicted based on the
calculated generalized susceptibility and a criterion
derived from a restricted Hatree-Fock model. The strongest electron-phonon
(e-p) coupling has been found to involve only As, Na z-direction vibration with
linear-response calculations. A possible enhancement mechanism for e-p coupling
due to correlation is suggested
Cyclosporin A-binding protein (cyclophilin) of Neurospora crassa
Cyclophilin (cyclosporin A-binding protein) has a dual localization in the mitochondria and in the cytosol of Neurospora crassa. The two forms are encoded by a single gene which is transcribed into mRNAs having different lengths and 5' termini (approximately 1 and 0.8 kilobases). The shorter mRNA specifies the cytosolic protein consisting of 179 amino acids. The longer mRNA is translated into a precursor polypeptide with an amino-terminal extension of 44 amino acids which is cleaved in two steps upon entry into the mitochondrial matrix. Neurospora cyclophilin shows about 60% sequence homology to human and bovine cyclophilins

Full counting statistics of heteronuclear molecules from Feshbach-assisted photo association
We study the effects of quantum statistics on the counting statistics of
ultracold heteronuclear molecules formed by Feshbach-assisted photoassociation
[Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 140405 (2004)]. Exploiting the formal similarities
with sum frequency generation and using quantum optics methods we consider the
cases where the molecules are formed from atoms out of two Bose-Einstein
condensates, out of a Bose-Einstein condensate and a gas of degenerate
fermions, and out of two degenerate Fermi gases with and without superfluidity.
Bosons are treated in a single mode approximation and fermions in a degenerate
model. In these approximations we can numerically solve the master equations
describing the system's dynamics and thus we find the full counting statistics
of the molecular modes. The full quantum dynamics calculations are complemented
by mean field calculations and short time perturbative expansions. While the
molecule production rates are very similar in all three cases at this level of
approximation, differences show up in the counting statistics of the molecular
fields. The intermediate field of closed-channel molecules is for short times
second-order coherent if the molecules are formed from two Bose-Einstein
condensates or a Bose-Fermi mixture. They show counting statistics similar to a
thermal field if formed from two normal Fermi gases. The coherence properties
of molecule formation in two superfluid Fermi gases are intermediate between
the two previous cases. In all cases the final field of deeply-bound molecules
is found to be twice as noisy as that of the intermediate state. This is a
consequence of its coupling to the lossy optical cavity in our model, which
acts as an input port for quantum noise, much like the situation in an optical

Thermal diffusion by Brownian motion induced fluid stress
The Ludwig-Soret effect, the migration of a species due to a temperature
gradient, has been extensively studied without a complete picture of its cause
emerging. Here we investigate the dynamics of DNA and spherical particles sub
jected to a thermal gradient using a combination of Brownian dynamics and the
lattice Boltzmann method. We observe that the DNA molecules will migrate to
colder regions of the channel, an observation also made in the experiments of
Duhr, et al[1]. In fact, the thermal diffusion coefficient found agrees
quantitatively with the experimental value. We also observe that the thermal
diffusion coefficient decreases as the radius of the studied spherical
particles increases. Furthermore, we observe that the thermal
fluctuations-fluid momentum flux coupling induces a gradient in the stress
which leads to thermal migration in both systems.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figue
