    Comparison of recovery quality following Medetomidine versus Xylazine balanced isoflurane anaesthesia in horses: a retrospective analysis

    Medetomidine partial intravenous anaesthesia (PIVA) has not been compared to xylazine PIVA regarding quality of recovery. This clinical retrospective study compared recoveries following isoflurane anaesthesia balanced with medetomidine or xylazine. The following standard protocol was used: sedation with 7 µg·kg−1 medetomidine or 1.1 mg·kg−1 xylazine, anaesthesia induction with ketamine/diazepam, maintenance with isoflurane and 3.5 µg·kg−1·h−1 medetomidine or 0.7 mg·kg−1·h−1 xylazine, and sedation after anaesthesia with 2 µg·kg−1 medetomidine or 0.3 mg·kg−1 xylazine. Recovery was timed and, using video recordings, numerically scored by two blinded observers. Influence of demographics, procedure, peri-anaesthetic drugs, and intraoperative complications (hypotension, hypoxemia, and tachycardia) on recovery were analysed using regression analysis (p < 0.05). A total of 470 recoveries (medetomidine 279, xylazine 191) were finally included. Following medetomidine, recoveries were significantly longer (median (interquartile range): 57 (43–71) min) than xylazine (43 (32–59) min) (p < 0.001). However, the number of attempts to stand was similar (medetomidine and xylazine: 2 (1–3)). Poorer scores were seen with increased pre-anaesthetic dose of xylazine, intraoperative tetrastarch, or salbutamol. However, use of medetomidine or xylazine did not influence recovery score, concluding that, following medetomidine–isoflurane PIVA, recovery is longer, but of similar quality compared to xylazine

    The Hasli Formation of the Irchel Plateau – A key record for older Early Pleistocene interglacial sediments in northern Switzerland

    In the Alpine region of Central Europe, terrestrial Early Pleistocene deposits with preserved faunal and botanical remains are rare. The predominantly gravelly Höhere Deckenschotter (HDS) deposits of northern Switzerland and adjoining south-western Germany are considered the oldest Quaternary sediments in the northern Alpine Foreland, linked with the first extensive Quaternary Alpine glaciations. This multidisciplinary study investigates the Hasli Formation (HF), a unique silty unit with well-preserved biological remains within an HDS sequence at the Irchel Plateau north of Zürich, providing new climatic and environmental data for these exceptional deposits, as well as crucial information about their age. Systematic mapping of the HF, in addition to the underlying and covering gravel units, has been coupled with sedimentary logging and biostratigraphic analysis at several sites. The HF is present over an area c.4 by up to 1.4 km, and where studied is 1.6–6.2 m thick. The sediments and biological material are indicative of overbank deposits accumulating within the damp floodplain of a large meandering river. The recovered small mammal remains are from eight arvicolid species or genera, including Mimomys pliocaenicus, M. reidi/tigliensis and Clethrionomys cf. kretzoii, which became extinct c.1.8 Ma, and Pliomys episcopalis/simplicior, which first appeared c.2 Ma ago. The over 75k identified molluscs, include c.72k coming from 89 terrestrial species and over 3k from 28 aquatic taxa. The molluscan faunas from all locations where the HF has been studied share important biostratigraphic marker species, and indicate analogous climatic and environmental conditions. The marker species include several that became extinct during the Early Pleistocene, of which Clausilia stranzendorfensis and Cochlostoma salomoni, present throughout the HF, are the most important as they disappeared c.1.8 Ma. Many marker species have modern or palaeo-distributions that lie far to the west, south and east of the Swiss Plateau, showing that the climate was much warmer than today, typical for the Tiglian warm stage. The alluvial floodplain was covered by rather dense, mature woodland. Amino acid (AA) analysis shows that molluscan remains from the HF are among the oldest of the Quaternary shell material studied from across the Swiss Plateau. Palaeomagnetic data shows a change from reversed to normal polarity within the upper part of the HF. When combined, the small mammal and molluscan remains, palaeomagnetic measurements, AA geochronology and sedimentary data, suggest an age of 2.1–1.8 Ma for the HF. Recently produced cosmogenic dates bracket the age of the HDS gravels beneath the HF to depositional periods between 2.6 and 0.9 Ma, with the youngest ages being in disagreement with our findings. The abundance and diversity of the molluscs from the Irchel Plateau, with several rare extinct species, together with a notable small mammal assemblage, make this a key palaeontological site and an important reference point for European Quaternary biostratigraphy

    Appreciation and illegitimate tasks as predictors of affective well-being: Disentangling within- and between-person effects

    This study examines the effects of appreciation and illegitimate tasks on affective well-being. As empirical results often refer to inter-individual effects but are interpreted in terms of intra-individual effects, we try to disentangle the two. In longitudinal multilevel structural equation models with data of 308 participants, appreciation predicted affective well-being in the expected direction both on the within-level and the between-level, whereas illegitimate tasks had a stronger effect on the between level. On the within-level, appreciation buffered the effect of illegitimate tasks for two of the four facets of affective well-being. Demonstrating a convergent and pervasive effect of appreciation on both levels but diverging effects of illegitimate tasks implies that finding on one level may, but need not, work on the other level as well

    How does appreciation lead to higher job satisfaction?

    Purpose: Building on the “Stress-as-Offense-to-Self” theory, this study investigates appreciation as a predictor of job satisfaction over time, mediated by subjective success and feelings of resentment towards one's organization. Design/methodology/approach: Analyses are based on a three-wave study with two-month time intervals, with a sample of 193 employees from six Swiss organizations. Findings: Double mediation by subjective success and feelings of resentment was confirmed; no mediation was found in a reversed mediation model. Results highlight the importance of appreciation for employees' feelings of success and job satisfaction, but also for affect related to the organization as a whole. Practical implications: Organizations should recognize the role of appreciation in satisfaction, affective reactions toward the organization, and information about one's standing. Appreciation can be expressed in multiple ways; it not only increases job satisfaction but also helps employees to validate their judgments about their own performance. Originality/value: Appreciation is a promising resource for employee well-being. The present study is one of few focusing on appreciation as a resource in its own right, rather than as part of broader constructs, such as social support. Our results not only confirm the importance of appreciation but also shed light on mechanisms through which it may exert its influence. They complement a multilevel analysis based on the same data showing an association of appreciation with different indicators of well-being on the interpersonal as well as the intrapersonal level

    Depositional setting and early diagenesis of the dinosaur eggshell-bearing Aren Fm at Bastus, Late Campanian, south-central Pyrenees

    The Late Cretaceous Aren Fm exposed north of Bastus in the Tremp Basin (south-central Pyrenees) preserves an excellent record of dinosaur eggs laid in a marine littoral setting. Different from other cases reported in literature, at the Bastus site the preferential nesting ground was original beach sand. The coastal deposits of Aren Fm can be grouped into four facies assemblages, representing respectively shoreface, beachface, beach ridge plain and backbarrier lagoon environments. Shoreface deposits include fine- to coarsegrained hybrid arenites and subordinate quartz-dominated conglomerates with ripple structures of wave and wave-current origin. Beachface deposits are mainly storm beach conglomerates, but parallel-laminated foreshore arenites locally occur. Backbarrier lagoon deposits comprise of washover sandy conglomerates that grade laterally into sandy lime mudstones, biomicrites and marls. Beach ridge sediment, wherein the bulk of dinosaur eggs and eggshell debris occurs, predominantly is a reddish hybrid arenite that has undergone a complex early diagenetic evolution, including marine and meteoric cementation followed by soil development. The reddish arenites overlie wave-dominated shoreface deposits and in places pass laterally into lagoonal deposits. They originally formed shore ridges, that became stabilized during progradational episodes by pedogenesis (beach ridge, sensu[Otvos, E.G., 2000. Beach ridges—definitions and significance. Geomorphology 32, 83–108.]), which also affected the dinosaur eggs. The eggshell-bearing beach ridge arenites are typically preserved at the top of parasequences forming the systems tracts of a third-order sequence. Thick packages of this facies resulted from aggradation of barrier/beach ridge deposits, whose preservation below surfaces of transgressive erosion was favoured by incipient lithification
