    Non-perturbative statistical theory of intermittency in ITG drift wave turbulence with zonal flows

    The probability distribution functions (PDFs) of momentum flux and zonal flow formation in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) turbulence are investigated in two different models. The first is a general five-field model (ni, , Ti, Te, vi) where a reductive perturbation method is used to derive dynamical equations for drift waves and a zonal flow. The second is a reduced two-field model (, Ti) that has an exact non-linear solution (bipolar vortex soliton). In both models the exponential tails of the zonal flow PDFs are found with the same scaling ( ), but with different coefficients cZF. The PDFs of momentum flux is, however, found to be qualitatively different with the scaling (PDF ~ exp{−cMRs}), where s = 2 and s = 3/2 in the five and two-field models, respectively

    Land reform and conflict in South Sudan : evidence from Yei River Country

    Following South Sudanese independence in 2011, land reform became a major aspect of state building, partly to address historical injustices and partly to avoid future conflicts around land. In the process,land became a trigger for conflicts, sometimes between communities with no histories of “ethnic conflict.” Drawing on cases in two rural areas in Yei River County in South Sudan, this paper shows that contradictions in the existing legal frameworks on land are mainly to blame for those conflicts.These contradictions are influenced, in turn, by the largely top-down approach to state building, which has tended to neglect changes in society and regarding land resulting from colonialism and civil wars.Constellations of governanc

    Microscopic spectra of dirac operators and finite-volume partition functions

    Exact results from random matrix theory are used to systematically analyse the relationship between microscopic Dirac spectra and finite-volume partition functions. Results are presented for the unitary ensemble, and the chiral analogs of the three classical matrix ensembles: unitary, orthogonal and symplectic, all of which describe universality classes of SU(Nc) gauge theories with Nf fermions in different representations.     We derive the hole probability and the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue of chiral hermitian random matrices corresponding to Dirac operators coupled to massive quarks in QCD. They are expressed in terms of the QCD partition function in the mesoscopic regime.     The antifields of the Batalin-Vilkovisky Lagrangian quantization are standard antighosts of certain collective fields. These collective fields ensure that Schwinger-Dyson equations are satisfied as a consequence of the gauge symmetry algebra. The associated antibracket and its canonical structure appear naturally if one integrates out the corresponding ghost fields.     Data from a pre-publication independent replication initiative examining ten moral judgement effects

    We present the data from a crowdsourced project seeking to replicate findings in independent laboratories before (rather than after) they are published. In this Pre-Publication Independent Replication (PPIR) initiative, 25 research groups attempted to replicate 10 moral judgment effects from a single laboratory's research pipeline of unpublished findings. The 10 effects were investigated using online/lab surveys containing psychological manipulations (vignettes) followed by questionnaires. Results revealed a mix of reliable, unreliable, and culturally moderated findings. Unlike any previous replication project, this dataset includes the data from not only the replications but also from the original studies, creating a unique corpus that researchers can use to better understand reproducibility and irreproducibility in science
