    Landscape structure affects the prevalence and distribution of a tick-borne zoonotic pathogen

    Background Landscape structure can affect pathogen prevalence and persistence with consequences for human and animal health. Few studies have examined how reservoir host species traits may interact with landscape structure to alter pathogen communities and dynamics. Using a landscape of islands and mainland sites we investigated how natural landscape fragmentation affects the prevalence and persistence of the zoonotic tick-borne pathogen complex Borrelia burgdorferi(sensu lato), which causes Lyme borreliosis. We hypothesized that the prevalence of B. burgdorferi (s.l.) would be lower on islands compared to the mainland and B. afzelii, a small mammal specialist genospecies, would be more affected by isolation than bird-associated B. garinii and B. valaisiana and the generalist B. burgdorferi (sensu stricto). Methods Questing (host-seeking) nymphal I. Ricinus ticks (n = 6567) were collected from 12 island and 6 mainland sites in 2011, 2013 and 2015 and tested for B. burgdorferi(s.l.). Deer abundance was estimated using dung transects. Results The prevalence of B. burgdorferi (s.l.) was significantly higher on the mainland (2.5%, 47/1891) compared to island sites (0.9%, 44/4673) (P < 0.01). While all four genospecies of B. burgdorferi (s.l.) were detected on the mainland, bird-associated species B. garinii and B. valaisiana and the generalist genospecies B. burgdorferi(s.s.) predominated on islands. Conclusion We found that landscape structure influenced the prevalence of a zoonotic pathogen, with a lower prevalence detected among island sites compared to the mainland. This was mainly due to the significantly lower prevalence of small mammal-associated B. afzelii. Deer abundance was not related to pathogen prevalence, suggesting that the structure and dynamics of the reservoir host community underpins the observed prevalence patterns, with the higher mobility of bird hosts compared to small mammal hosts leading to a relative predominance of the bird-associated genospecies B. garinii and generalist genospecies B. burgdorferi (s.s.) on islands. In contrast, the lower prevalence of B. afzelii on islands may be due to small mammal populations there exhibiting lower densities, less immigration and stronger population fluctuations.     Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors

    Dotychczasowe polskie doświadczenie z wykorzystaniem biomasy w energetyce systemowej w celu zwiększenia udziału odnawialnych źródeł energii w ogólnym miksie energetycznym przy współspalaniu biomasy łącznie z węglem nie jest optymalnym rozwiązaniem. Właściwe jest tworzenie lokalnych rynków biomasy dla celów energetycznych jako fundamentu przyszłej energetyki rozproszonej opartej na biomasie. Takie rozwiązanie ułatwia wykorzystanie popiołów ze spalania biomasy do nawożenia roślin. Temat niniejszego opracowania stanowi ocena przydatności do nawożenia gleb popiołu z pelletów spalanych w innowacyjnym, zgazowującym palniku pelletowym LESTER. W pracy przeprowadzono analizę zawartości w popiele makro- i mikroskładników oraz porównanie ze składem chemicznym spalanych pelletów oraz ilości dopuszczalnych w nawozach. Zawartość fosforu, potasu, wapnia i magnezu w popiołach dennych i lotnych otrzymywanych przy spalaniu pelletów z drewna, z wykorzystaniem zgazowującego palnika pelletowego LESTER oraz słomy żytniej, uzasadnia wykorzystywanie tego materiału do nawożenia gleb. Natomiast ze względu na niską, porównywalną z zasobnością gleby, zawartością azotu materiału tego nie należy traktować jako nawozu, dostarczającego ten makroskładnik do gleby. Popioły denne analizowane w opracowaniu stosowane do celów nawozowych spełniają warunki określone w rozporządzeniu Ministra Środowiska z dnia 9 września 2002 r. Popioły lotne ze względu na wyższą zawartość żelaza, cynku i niklu należy stosować z dużą ostrożnością. W związku z tym, że popiołów dennych otrzymujemy wielokrotnie więcej niż lotnych, należy zastanowić się nad możliwością stosowania ich w postaci mieszanin o odpowiednich proporcjach.The use of biomass in system energetics for the purpose of increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy mix by biomass and coal co-combustion is not an optimal solution in the light of previous experience in Poland. It is appropriate to develop local biomass market for energy purposes as a basis for future distributed energy generation based on biomass. This solution facilitates the use of ash from biomass combustion for plant fertilisation. The present paper concerns the assessment of the use of ash from combustion of pellets in an innovative gasifying pellet burner – LESTER type, for soil fertilisation. The paper presents the analysis of the content of macro- and microelements in ash against the chemical composition of pellets in relation to permissible contents in fertilisers. The content of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in bottom and fly ash from combustion of wood pellet and rye straw in LESTER gasifying burner validates the use of this material for soil fertilisation purposes. However, due to low nitrogen content – comparable to that found in soil, the material is not to be considered as fertiliser supplying this macroelement to soil. The analysed bottom ash used for fertilisation meets the conditions set out in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 9 September 2002. However, fly ash should be used with considerable caution due to high content of iron, zinc and nickel. The yield of bottom ash is several times higher than that of fly ash, therefore, the possibility of its use in a form of mixtures in adequate proportions should be considered
