Deterministic and Probability Analysis of Paper Machine Vibration Impact to the Structure Safety and Human Comfort
This paper describes the probability and
sensitivity analysis of the concrete frame and paper
machine interaction. On the base of the experimental
results, the calculation FEM model was verified. The
uncertainties of the loads level, the material properties and
other influences following the inaccuracy of the calculated
model and numerical methods were considered in the
approximation method RSM
Analysis of Soil-Structure Interaction Effects of NPP Structures on Nonhomogeneous Subsoil
This paper describes the soil-structure interaction
(SSI) effects to the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP)
structure with reactor VVER-1200. The simplified 1D and
numerical 3D FE models of the nonhomogeneous subsoil
are investigated. The methodology of the calculation of the
frequency dependent complex functions of the soil stiffness
and damping is presented
Language, Intentionality and Appropriation
In the mid 80s Daniel Dennett has published a
series of articles on the problem of the self. His suggested
solution to the problem is rather unique and seems to be at
odds with some more recent work on the subject. It is my
aim to try to square his thoughts with some other
approaches that tentatively point to quite different sources of
selves. Dennett in all of his papers relies heavily upon a
strategy that made it all the way to the title of one of them.
He speaks of selves as centers of narrative gravity (Dennett
1992). This strategy uses two crucial components –
language and fiction. Let me say few words about each of
them. First, in accordance with a general tactics of his postbehaviorism
and fully in line with his method of
heterophenomenology (see Dennett 1991), he treats mental
phenomena in linguistic terms. We only know of a presence
of the former via our confrontation with the latter.
Psychological self receives the same treatment. Claiming to
capture a fundamental building block of the self, Dennett
gives elaborate examples of linguistic practices that lead one
to become oneself. It is in the game of asking and answering
questions on their history, present conditions and future
plans or desires that organisms arrive to a coherent, stable
and lasting view of their selves. He doesn"t seem to be
troubled by questions of subjectivity, i.e. what constitutes
subjects and whether in fact some accounts of their selves is
needed. At various points where he speaks of subjects, he
dismisses philosophical explanations and wants to replace
them with biological ones (e.g. Dennett 1989)
Adjoint methods for computing sensitivities in local volatility surfaces
In this paper we present the adjoint method of computing sensitivities of option prices with respect to nodes in the local volatility surface. We first introduce the concept of algorithmic differentiation and how it relates to\ud
path-wise sensitivity computations within a Monte Carlo framework. We explain the two approaches available: forward mode and adjoint mode. We illustrate these concepts on the simple example of a model with a geometric Brownian motion driving the underlying price process, for which\ud
we compute the Delta and Vega in forward and adjoint mode. We then go on to explain in full detail how to apply these ideas to a model where the underlying has a volatility term defined by a local volatility surface. We provide source codes for both the simple and the more complex case and\ud
analyze numerical results to show the strengths of the adjoint approach
