In vitro synthesis of full-length DNA transcripts of Rous sarcoma virus RNA by viral DNA polymerase.
Progress of the Felsenkeller shallow-underground accelerator for nuclear astrophysics
Low-background experiments with stable ion beams are an important tool for
putting the model of stellar hydrogen, helium, and carbon burning on a solid
experimental foundation. The pioneering work in this regard has been done by
the LUNA collaboration at Gran Sasso, using a 0.4 MV accelerator. In the
present contribution, the status of the project for a higher-energy underground
accelerator is reviewed. Two tunnels of the Felsenkeller underground site in
Dresden, Germany, are currently being refurbished for the installation of a 5
MV high-current Pelletron accelerator. Construction work is on schedule and
expected to complete in August 2017. The accelerator will provide intense, 50
uA, beams of 1H+, 4He+, and 12C+ ions, enabling research on astrophysically
relevant nuclear reactions with unprecedented sensitivity.Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of Nuclei in the Cosmos XIV, 19-24 June

Production of new neutron-rich isotopes of heavy elements in fragmentation reactions of U projectiles at 1 A GeV
The production of heavy neutron-rich nuclei has been investigated using cold
fragmentation reactions of U projectiles at relativistic energies. The
experiment performed at the high-resolving-power magnetic spectrometer FRS at
GSI allowed to identify 45 new heavy neutron-rich nuclei: Pt,
Au, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi,
Po, At, Rn and Fr. The production
cross sections of these nuclei were also determined and used to benchmark
reaction codes that predict the production of nuclei far from stability.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
The Composition of the São Brás Copper Hoard in Relation to the Bell Beaker Metallurgy in the South-western Iberian Peninsula
A large ceramic vessel was discovered at São Brás (southern Portugal) containing a metallic hoard from the Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age period. These weapons and tools were characterized by microanalytical techniques as being composed of copper with varying arsenic contents (2.2± 1.6 wt%) and minor amounts of lead, bismuth and iron. The collection shows a clear association between daggers and copper with a higher arsenic content, which can be explained by the high status of these silvery alloys. Finally, the compositional distribution of the hoard was compared with the metallurgy of the Bell Beaker and non–Bell Beaker communities inhabiting the south-western Iberian Peninsula.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Cross-sections of spallation residues produced in 1.A GeV 208Pb on proton reactions
Spallation residues produced in 1 GeV per nucleon Pb on proton
reactions have been studied using the FRagment Separator facility at GSI.
Isotopic produc- tion cross-sections of elements from Pm to Pb
have been measured down to 0.1 mb with a high accuracy. The recoil kinetic
energies of the produced fragments were also determined. The obtained
cross-sections agree with most of the few existing gamma-spectroscopy data.
Data are compared with different intra nuclear-cascade and evaporation-fission
models. Drastic deviations were found for a standard code used in technical
applications.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett.
