The Scientific Integrity of Applied Research

This paper reviews some of the threats to scientific independence in the Netherlands that have recently alerted the scientific community. The problems are not only apparent in research requested by the government or local authorities; they are also found in a variety of research fields. They are essentially related to the increasing dearth of research funding in the universities. In Europe in general, and the Netherlands in particular, there are no large, independent research foundations which exist elsewhere, so research funding generally depends on funding by government, local authorities or industry. The problem has long been underappreciated and no effective action has been taken. However, more recently and as a consequence of media reports, a number of drastic measures are being taken. Delinquent behavior among young people in the Western world. First results of the international self-report delinquency study

This volume presents the first results of the self-report in 13 individual countries. A second volume will follow in 1995, which will present the results of in-depth comparative analysis. The outcomes of these studies are presented in individual chapters. Some conclusions on the basis of this material are presented in the last chapter. These preliminary conclusions are based on similarities in the instruments used and a number of similar samples. In the chapters demographic and socio-economic features of the country under discussion are presented as well as cultural factors, alcohol- and drug consumption, study design, and conclusions about delinquency and problem behavior

Adolescent suicidal ideation: a comparison of incarcerated and school-based samples

and risk-taking behavior. RESULTS: Suicidal ideations during the past year were reported by 21.5% of detained males, compared to 6.7% in the general population. In females, 58.1% of detained individuals reported suicidal thoughts during the past year, compared to 14.4% of the general population. In girls and boys from the general population, both internalizing and externalizing problems were higher in suicidal ideators than in non-suicidal youth, while in the detention group mainly internalizing problems were higher in suicidal ideators. When comparing detention suicidal ideators with those from the general population, male suicidal ideators scored higher on delinquency, while detained female suicidal ideators also scored higher on posttraumatic stress, but lower on prosocial beliefs. LIMITATIONS: Information used in this study was solely based on self-report measures only and limited to Flemish adolescents. CONCLUSION: Since suicidal ideation is a frequent problem in detained youth, adequate recognition and treatment seems clinically relevant. While both internalizing and externalizing psychopathology may be an indicator of suicidal ideation in the general population, internalizing problems may be the main clinical predictor in detained yout

En premier lieu nous avons comparé, par interview, un groupe de jeunes délinquants, àgés de 16 à 18 ans , ayant comparu devant le juge de la jeunesse pour des delits contre les biens, avec un groupe contróle de gargons du même àge, habitant la même commune et appartenant à la même catêgorie socio-économique.
