The economic impacts of blackbird (Icteridae) damage to sunflower in the USA
BACKGROUND: Blackbird (Icteridae) damage to ripening sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) has been a persistent economic issue in the USA for the last five decades. To quantify losses, we surveyed blackbird damage from 2001 to 2013 (excluding 2004) to physiologically mature sunflower in eight states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, Kansas, and Vermont.
RESULTS:We pooled data gathered during the most recent 5 years (2009 to 2013) of the survey and found losses averaged US11.3 million for confectionery and oilseed hybrids, respectively. Three states, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, had sufficient acreage and bird damage to warrant economic analyses using a regional economic model. The average annual total (direct plus indirect) economic impact of bird damage to sunflower production for North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska was US7.3 million, and $US2.6million, respectively.
CONCLUSION: This study provides a better understanding of the broader economic implications of bird damage to sunflower by estimating the macroeconomic impacts of lost sunflower production in the region. Additionally, the findings of this study may be used to inform decisions regarding bird management policy by providing policymakers with information to determine the downstream value of bird management and the possible benefits of improved methods that further mitigate losses
Evidence for the Universality of Properties of Red-sequence Galaxies in X-Ray- and Red-Sequence-Selected Clusters at z ~ 1
We study the slope, intercept, and scatter of the color–magnitude and color–mass relations for a sample of 10 infrared red-sequence-selected clusters at z ~ 1. The quiescent galaxies in these clusters formed the bulk of their stars above z ≳ 3 with an age spread Δt ≳ 1 Gyr. We compare UVJ color–color and spectroscopic-based galaxy selection techniques, and find a 15% difference in the galaxy populations classified as quiescent by these methods. We compare the color–magnitude relations from our red-sequence selected sample with X-ray- and photometric-redshift-selected cluster samples of similar mass and redshift. Within uncertainties, we are unable to detect any difference in the ages and star formation histories of quiescent cluster members in clusters selected by different methods, suggesting that the dominant quenching mechanism is insensitive to cluster baryon partitioning at z ~ 1
Discovery and Annotation of Two Phages that Infect Microbacterium foliorum: Tedro and Bajuniper
We isolated and purified Tedro and BAjuniper which infect the host Microbacterium foliorium. Tedro is a lytic, cluster EF phage isolated from soil collected in Hawarden, Iowa. Its genome is 56,197 bp long, circularly permuted, and includes 83 protein-coding genes and no tRNA genes. We are examining two of Tedro’s genes, genes 56 and 57, both of which are predicted to encode a DnaE-like DNA polymerase III (alpha) in more detail. Tedro_57 is twice as large as Tedro_56 so we are using additional bioinformatic tools to understand these genes. BAjuniper was isolated from soil collected in a garden in Orange City, Iowa. Its genome is 41,985 bp long. It was assigned to cluster EB. BAjuniper’s genome includes one tRNA gene and we will finalize BAjuniper’s annotation shortly

Talking Around It: A Qualitative Study Exploring Dyadic Congruence in Managing the Uncertainty of Living With a Ventricular Assist Device.
BACKGROUND: Vital components of communicating goals of care and preferences include eliciting the patient and caregivers definition of quality of life, understanding meaningful activities and relationships, and exploring wishes for care at the end of life. Although current literature suggests framing conversations regarding end of life through the lens of meaning and quality of life, there is limited literature exploring dyadic congruence surrounding these important constructs among patients with ventricular assist devices (VADs) and their caregivers. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore congruence of VAD patient and caregiver perspectives regarding end of life, definitions of quality of life, and meaning in life while managing the uncertainty of living with a VAD. METHODS: We used thematic analysis to analyze semistructured qualitative interviews of 10 patient-caregiver dyads 3 to 12 months after VAD implantation. RESULTS: Three major themes were identified: (1) differing trajectories of uncertainty and worry, (2) a spectrum of end-of-life perspectives, and (3) enjoying everyday moments and independence. Overall, patients and caregivers had differing perspectives regarding uncertainty and end of life. Within-dyad congruence was most evident as dyads discussed definitions of meaning or quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: Dyadic perspectives on end of life, meaning in life, and quality of life can inform how palliative care and VAD teams approach conversations about planning for the end of life. Findings from this study can inform future shared decision-making interventions for patients living with VADs and their caregivers

A picture is worth a thousand words: exploring the roles of caregivers and the home environment of ventricular assist device patients
AimsCaregivers of persons living with ventricular assist devices (VADs) are integrally involved in both medical and non-medical care. We sought to understand tasks caregivers perform after surgical recovery, ways the home is adapted for those tasks, and presence of home safety hazards.Methods and resultsWe conducted semi-structured interviews with persons living with a VAD and their caregivers. Pictures were taken of areas in the home where: (i) caregiving activities occurred, (ii) VAD or medical supplies were kept, and (iii) home adaptations were made for VAD care. Pictures were described in written detail and analysed. A qualitative descriptive approach was used for analysis. The sample consisted of 10 dyads, with mostly spousal relationships (60%) between male patients (60%) and female caregivers (80%). Three themes were identified: (i) Evolution of Caregiving and Support: Patients gain independence, but caregivers are still needed, (ii) Adapting the Home Environment: Changes are focused on functional needs, and (iii) Hidden Dangers: Illumination of safety concerns by photographs. Assistance with bathing, driveline care, and medication management were common caregiving tasks. Most home adaptations occurred in the bathroom and bedroom including sleeping recliners, shower chairs, removable shower heads, and hanging hooks to hold VAD equipment. Safety hazards included minimal space for safe ambulation, infection risk, and home-made adaptations to the environment.ConclusionsThese findings describe key home caregiving tasks, home adaptations, and safety concerns that require further education and support. Utilizing pictures may be a feasible method for assessing VAD teaching, caregiving needs, and identifying potential risks

Non-Western immigrant children have lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D than children from Western families
Objective: To determine if children aged 1-6 years from non-Western immigrant families have lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels than children from Western-born families and examine which factors influence this relationship.
Design: Cross-sectional study.
Setting: Toronto, Canada.
Subjects: Healthy children (n 1540) recruited through the TARGet Kids! practice-based research network. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations of non-Western immigrants were compared with those of children from Western-born families. Children from non-Western immigrant families were defined as those born, or their parents were born, outside a Western country. Univariate and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify factors which might influence this relationship.
Results: Median age was 36 months, 51 % were male, 86 % had 'light' skin pigmentation, 55 % took vitamin D supplements, mean cow's milk intake was 1·8 cups/d and 27 % were non-Western immigrants. Median serum 25(OH)D concentration was 83 nmol/l, with 5 % having 25(OH)D
Conclusions: There is an association between non-Western immigration and lower 25(OH)D in early childhood. This difference appears related to known vitamin D determinants, primarily vitamin D supplementation, representing opportunities for intervention.</p
