    Knowledge and agent-based system for decentralised scheduling in manufacturing

    The aim of the research paper is to develop algorithms for manufacturers’ agents that would allow them to sequence their own operation plans and to develop a multi-agent infrastructure to allow operation pair agents to cooperatively adjust the timing of manufacturing operations. The scheduling problem consisted of jobs with fixed process plans and of manufacturers collectively offering the necessary operations for the jobs. Manufacturer agents sequenced and pair agents timed each operation as and when required. Timing an operation triggered a cascade of conflicts along the job process plan that other pair agents would pick up on and would take action accordingly. The conventional approach performs conflict resolution in series and manufacturer agents as well as pair agents wait until they are allowed to sequence and time the next operation. The limiting assumption behind that approach was systematically removed, and the proposed approach allowed manufacturers to perform operation scheduling in parallel, cutting down tenfold on the computation time. The multi-agent infrastructure consists of the ProtĂ©gĂ© knowledge base, the Pellet semantic reasoner and the Workflows and Agent Development Environment (WADE). The case studies used were the MT6, MT10 and LA19 job shop scheduling problems; and an industrial use case was provided to give context to the manufacturing environment investigated. Although there were benefits from the decentralised manufacturing system, we noted an optimality loss of 34% on the makespans. However, for scalability, our approach showed good promise

    Towards decentralised job shop scheduling as a web service

    This paper aims to investigate the fundamental requirements for a cloud-based scheduling service for manufacturing, notably manufacturer priority to scheduling service, resolution of schedule conflict, and error-proof data entry. A flow chart of an inference-based system for manufacturing scheduling is proposed and a prototype was designed using semantic web technologies. An adapted version of the Muth and Thompson 10 × 10 scheduling problem (MT10) was used as a case study and two manufacturing companies represented our use cases. Using Microsoft Project, levelled manufacturer operation plans were generated. Semantic rules were proposed for constraints calculation, scheduling and verification. Pellet semantic reasoner was used to apply those rules onto the case study. The results include two main findings. First, our system effectively detected conflicts when subjected to four types of disturbances. Secondly, suggestions of conflict resolutions were effective when implemented albeit they were not efficient. Consequently, our two hypotheses were accepted which gave merit for future works intended to develop scheduling as a web service. Future works will include three phases: (1) migration of our system to a graph database server, (2) a multi-agent system to automate conflict resolution and data entry, and (3) an optimisation mechanism for manufacturer prioritisation to scheduling services

    Discovery of a Hard X-Ray Source, SAX J0635+0533, in the Error Box of the Gamma-Ray Source 2EG 0635+0521

    We have discovered an x-ray source, SAX J0635+0533, with a hard spectrum within the error box of the GeV gamma-ray source in Monoceros, 2EG J0635+0521. The unabsorbed x-ray flux is 1.2*10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the 2-10 keV band. The x-ray spectrum is consistent with a simple powerlaw model with absorption. The photon index is 1.50 +/- 0.08 and we detect emission out to 40 keV. Optical observations identify a counterpart with a V-magnitude of 12.8. The counterpart has broad emission lines and the colors of an early B type star. If the identification of the x-ray/optical source with the gamma-ray source is correct, then the source would be a gamma-ray emitting x-ray binary.Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal, 8 page

    In this study, a comparative assessment of the nutritional quality and the safety of milk from cow breeds Girolando, Borgou, Borgou-Gir, and Lagunaire produced in Benin was carried out in the public breeding centers of Kpinnou, BĂ©tĂ©coucou, Okparaand in private farms in Adjohoun, respectively. Milk from the breed Borgou-Gir had the highest concentrations of macronutrients (protein and lactose) and minerals (magnesium: 197.556 ± 0.001 ppm, calcium: 2056.32 ± 0.000 ppm, and zinc: 5.522 ± 0.000 ppm). Analyzed milk samples were free of tuberculosis and brucellosis germs, and no mastitis prevalence was detected in milking cows. However, some milk samples had lead levels exceeding the maximum limit of 0.02 ppm prescribed by the Codex Alimentarius standard. In addition, milk from the breeds Borgou and Borgou-Gir contained pesticide residue levels, namely chlorpyrifos (0.12 ± 0.020 ppm) and cypermethrin (0.03 ± 0.020 ppm) higher than the Codex Alimentarius standard (0.01 ppm). Milk samples from Adjohoun and Kpinnou had an aflatoxin M1 level of 0.3 ± 0.000 ppb and 0,010 ppb ± 0.24, respectively and were not in agreement with the Codex Alimentarius standard (0, 05 ppb). Although rich in nutrients, analyzed cow’s milk may present health risks to consumers due to chemical contaminants

    The Intrinsically X-ray Weak Quasar PHL 1811. II. Optical and UV Spectra and Analysis

    This is the second of two papers reporting observations and analysis of the unusually bright (m_b=14.4), luminous (M_B=-25.5), nearby (z=0.192) narrow-line quasar PHL 1811. The first paper reported that PHL 1811 is intrinsically X-ray weak, and presented a spectral energy distribution (SED). Here we present HST STIS optical and UV spectra, and ground-based optical spectra. The optical and UV line emission is very unusual. There is no evidence for forbidden or semiforbidden lines. The near-UV spectrum is dominated by very strong FeII and FeIII, and unusual low-ionization lines such as NaID and CaII H&K are observed. High-ionization lines are very weak; CIV has an equivalent width of 6.6A, a factor of ~5 smaller than measured from quasar composite spectra. An unusual feature near 1200A can be deblended in terms of Ly\alpha, NV, SiII, and CIII* using the blueshifted CIV profile as a template. Photoionization modeling shows that the unusual line emission can be explained qualitatively by the unusually soft SED. Principally, a low gas temperature results in inefficient emission of collisionally excited lines, including the semiforbidden lines generally used as density diagnostics. The emission resembles that of high-density gas; in both cases this is a consequence of inefficient cooling. PHL 1811 is very unusual, but we note that quasar surveys are generally biased against finding similar objects.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS.     The Intrinsically X-ray Weak Quasar PHL 1811. I. X-ray Observations and Spectral Energy Distribution

    This is the first of two papers reporting observations and analysis of the unusually bright (m_b=14.4), luminous (M_B=-25.5), nearby (z=0.192) narrow-line quasar PHL 1811, focusing on the X-ray properties and the spectral energy distribution. Two Chandra observations reveal a weak X-ray source with a steep spectrum. Variability by a factor of 4 between the two observations separated by 12 days suggest that the X-rays are not scattered emission. The XMM-Newton spectra are modelled in the 0.3--5 keV band by a steep power law with \Gamma = 2.3\pm 0.1, and the upper limit on intrinsic absorption is 8.7 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}. The spectral slopes are consistent with power law indices commonly observed in NLS1s, and it appears that we observe the central engine X-rays directly. Including two recent Swift ToO snapshots, a factor of ~5 variability was observed among the five X-ray observations reported here. In contrast, the UV photometry obtained by the XMM-Newton OM and Swift UVOT, and the HST spectrum reveal no significant UV variability. The \alpha_{ox} inferred from the Chandra and contemporaneous HST spectrum is -2.3 \pm 0.1, significantly steeper than observed from other quasars of the same optical luminosity. The steep, canonical X-ray spectra, lack of absorption, and significant X-ray variability lead us to conclude that PHL 1811 is intrinsically X-ray weak.     A cross-cultural study of the representation of shape: Sensitivity to generalized cone dimensions

    Many of the phenomena underlying shape recognition can be derived from an assumption that the representation of simple parts can be understood in terms of independent dimensions of generalized cones, e.g., whether the axis of a cylinder is straight or curved or whether the sides are parallel or nonparallel. What enables this sensitivity? One explanation is that the representations derive from our immersion in a manufactured world of simple objects, e.g., a cylinder and a funnel, where these dimensions can be readily discerned independent of other stimulus variations. An alternative explanation is that genetic coding and/or early experience with extended contours - a characteristic of all naturally varying visual worlds - would be sufficient to develop the appropriate representations. The Himba, a seminomadic people in a remote region of Northwestern Namibia with little exposure to regular, simple artifacts, were virtually identical to western observers in representing generalized-cone dimensions of simple shapes independently. Thus immersion in a world of simple, manufactured shapes is not required for the development of a representation that specifies these dimensions independently

    Bosons in high temperature superconductors: an experimental survey

    We review a number of experimental techniques that are beginning to reveal fine details of the bosonic spectrum \alpha^2F(\Omega) that dominates the interaction between the quasiparticles in high temperature superconductors. Angle-resolved photo emission (ARPES) shows kinks in electronic dispersion curves at characteristic energies that agree with similar structures in the optical conductivity and tunnelling spectra. Each technique has its advantages. ARPES is momentum resolved and offers independent measurements of the real and imaginary part of the contribution of the bosons to the self energy of the quasiparticles. The optical conductivity can be used on a larger variety of materials and with the use of maximum entropy techniques reveals rich details of the spectra including their evolution with temperature and doping. Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy offers spacial resolution on the unit cell level. We find that together the various spectroscopies, including recent Raman results, are pointing to a unified picture of a broad spectrum of bosonic excitations at high temperature which evolves, as the temperature is lowered into a peak in the 30 to 60 meV region and a featureless high frequency background in most of the materials studied. This behaviour is consistent with the spectrum of spin fluctuations as measured by magnetic neutron scattering. However, there is evidence for a phonon contribution to the bosonic spectrum as well.Comment: 71 pages, 52 figure

    Lifelong learning and schools as community learning centres : key aspects of a national curriculum draft policy framework for Malta

    The island of Malta has been engaged in policy document formulations for curriculum renewal in the country’s educational system (4-16 years of age) since 1988 when the first National Minimum Curriculum (henceforth NMC) was launched (Wain, 1991; Borg et al, 1995). In 1999 a revamped NMC (Ministry of Education, 1999) was developed following a long process of consultation involving various stages and stakeholders. It was a compromise document (Borg & Mayo, 2006) which emerged as a result of reactions to a more radical and coherent draft document produced in 1988. Both curricular documents were subject to debates and critiques (Wain, 1991; Darmanin, 1993; Borg et al, 1995; Giordmaina, 2000; Borg and Mayo, 2006). More recently a series of volumes providing guidelines, key principles and aims for a national curriculum framework (henceforth NCF) have been produced (MEEF, 2011a,b,c,d) and are currently the target of debate and the focus of reactions by various stakeholders in education including teachers who were asked to read the volumes and provide reactions in the form of answers to a set questionnaire. In this paper, I will focus on one aspect of the documents, the first of its three aims: ‘Learners who are capable of successfully developing their full potential as lifelong learners.’ It is that aspect of the framework documents that falls within the purview of the title for this special issue. The use of this notion attests to the influence of the EU’s policy communications on member states, Malta having joined the Union in 2004 (Mayo, 2007).peer-reviewe
