Fragmented Condensate Ground State of Trapped Weakly Interacting Bosons in Two Dimensions
The ground state and its structure for a rotating, harmonically trapped
N-Boson system with a weak repulsive contact interaction are studied as the
angular momentum L increases up to 3N. We show that the ground state is
generally a fragmented condensate due to angular momentum conservation. In
response to an (arbitrarily weak) asymmetric perturbation of the trap, however,
the fragmented ground state can be transformed into a single condensate state.
We manifest this intrinsic instability by calculating the conditional
probability distributions, which show patterns analogous to the boson density
distributions predicted by mean-field theory.Comment: 4 pages, 4 ps figure
Extragalactic Sources for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Nuclei
In this article we examine the hypothesis that the highest energy cosmic rays
are complex nuclei from extragalactic sources. Under reasonable physical
assumptions, we show that the nearby metally rich starburst galaxies (M82 and
NGC 253) can produce all the events observed above the ankle. This requires
diffusion of particles below eV in extragalactic magnetic fields nG. Above eV, the model predicts the presence of
significant fluxes of medium mass and heavy nuclei with small rate of change of
composition. Notwithstanding, the most salient feature of the
starburst-hypothesis is a slight anisotropy induced by iron debris just before
the spectrum-cutoff.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. D, reference adde
Search for Anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays with the Telescope Array Experiment
We study the anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) events
collected by the Telescope Array (TA) detector in the first 40 months of
operation. Following earlier studies, we examine event sets with energy
thresholds of 10 EeV, 40 EeV, and 57 EeV. We find that the distributions of the
events in right ascension and declination are compatible with an isotropic
distribution in all three sets. We then compare with previously reported
clustering of the UHECR events at small angular scales. No significant
clustering is found in the TA data. We then check the events with E>57 EeV for
correlations with nearby active galactic nuclei. No significant correlation is
found. Finally, we examine all three sets for correlations with the large-scale
structure of the Universe. We find that the two higher-energy sets are
compatible with both an isotropic distribution and the hypothesis that UHECR
sources follow the matter distribution of the Universe (the LSS hypothesis),
while the event set with E>10 EeV is compatible with isotropy and is not
compatible with the LSS hypothesis at 95% CL unless large deflection angles are
also assumed. We show that accounting for UHECR deflections in a realistic
model of the Galactic magnetic field can make this set compatible with the LSS
hypothesis.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Measurement of the Cosmic Ray Energy Spectrum and Composition from 10^{17} to 10^{18.3} eV Using a Hybrid Fluorescence Technique
We study the spectrum and average mass composition of cosmic rays with
primary energies between 10^{17} eV and 10^{18} eV using a hybrid detector
consisting of the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) prototype and the MIA muon
array. Measurements have been made of the change in the depth of shower maximum
as a function of energy. A complete Monte Carlo simulation of the detector
response and comparisons with shower simulations leads to the conclusion that
the cosmic ray intensity is changing f rom a heavier to a lighter composition
in this energy range. The spectrum is consistent with earlier Fly's Eye
measurements and supports the previously found steepening near 4 \times 10^{17}
eV .Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures, in revtex4 epsf style, submited to AP
Regioselective Synthesis of Benzimidazolones via Cascade C–N Coupling of Monosubstituted Ureas
A direct method for the regioselective construction of benzimidazolones is reported wherein a single palladium catalyst is employed to couple monosubstituted urea substrates with differentially substituted 1,2-dihaloaromatic systems. In this method, the catalyst is able to promote a cascade of two discrete chemoselective C–N bond-forming processes that allows the highly selective and predictable formation of complex heterocycles from simple, readily available starting materials.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Award GM58160)National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Award GM099817)Lanxess CorporationMassachusetts Institute of Technology. A Measurement of Time-Averaged Aerosol Optical Depth using Air-Showers Observed in Stereo by HiRes
Air fluorescence measurements of cosmic ray energy must be corrected for
attenuation of the atmosphere. In this paper we show that the air-showers
themselves can yield a measurement of the aerosol attenuation in terms of
optical depth, time-averaged over extended periods. Although the technique
lacks statistical power to make the critical hourly measurements that only
specialized active instruments can achieve, we note the technique does not
depend on absolute calibration of the detector hardware, and requires no
additional equipment beyond the fluorescence detectors that observe the air
showers. This paper describes the technique, and presents results based on
analysis of 1258 air-showers observed in stereo by the High Resolution Fly's
Eye over a four year span.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by Astroparticle Physics

Search for Global Dipole Enhancements in the HiRes-I Monocular Data above 10^{18.5} eV
Several proposed source models for Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs)
consist of dipole distributions oriented towards major astrophysical landmarks
such as the galactic center, M87, or Centaurus A. We use a comparison between
real data and simulated data to show that the HiRes-I monocular data for
energies above 10^{18.5} eV is, in fact, consistent with an isotropic source
model. We then explore methods to quantify our sensitivity to dipole source
models oriented towards the Galactic Center, M87, and Centaurus A.Comment: 17 pages, 31 figure
