Investigating brand equity of third-party service providers

    Get PDF
Purpose: This research applies theory and techniques from the services and marketing literature to a supply chain context consisting of a shipper or seller, a customer or buyer, and a third-party logistics service provider (3PL) to investigate corporate brand equity resulting from service quality, customer satisfaction and customer loyalty towards the 3PL. Design/methodology/approach: A conceptual model was developed from the literature and tested with Finnish industrial firms using an online survey. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling to examine relationships among the four constructs. Findings: Hypothesised relationships among the four constructs in the conceptual model were supported however the relationship between loyalty and corporate brand equity was weak. Research limitations/implications: This investigatory research is based on a one country sample making transferability and generalisability to other countries difficult. Practical implications: The findings of this research should enable 3PL managers to determine service offerings that are most important to either shippers or customers, develop a service package using such offerings to satisfy needs, and thus build loyalty and corporate brand equity among both parties. Originality/value: This paper adds to our knowledge of these constructs in a supply chain context, particularly for 3PLs, and provides an interdisciplinary approach to research in the supply chain domain

This study is based on the “Accessibility of local and organic food in Northern Ostrobothnia (RuokaGIS)” project, which aim was to analyse local and organic food in geographic context and to develop their availability and access to markets at Northern Ostrobothnia. The project was funded by European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Northern Ostrobothnia. The project covered the period from 1. Oct. 2012 to 30. Sept. 2014. The project combines quantitative and qualitative approaches by applying geographic information system (GIS) based accessibility analyses and structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The aim of the project was to 1) explore areal patterns of local on organic food accessibility, 2) visualise supply surplus and unsaturated demand and 3) recognise factors to develop local and organic food production in geographic context. Due to a long logistic chain of food markets, the emphasis of the project designed on the basis of survey results. Primary aspects were to analyse areal balance of statistical production and consumption at accurate scale and to develop logistics and networking of small and medium size companies in food sector by analysis of potential hub node locations. GIS based accessibility analyses and qualitative surveys were conducted interactively during the project with aim to generate novel approaches for analysing accessibility in the context of local and organic food markets and logistics. Key GIS data of the study covered farms with production attributes supplied by Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Statistics Finland’s grid cell data of population and Finnish Transport Agency’s digital model of road network. Questionnaires and supporting interviews covered agricultural producers, companies in processing and refining, institutional kitchens, public procurements and food circles. Main findings of the project consider local and organic food concept, competitiveness, markets, logistics and their development aspects. Accessibility analyses indicated that regions in the southern parts of Northern Ostrobothnia have a strong role in saturating areal demand, which emphasises to towns and city regions. Analysis of suitable hub locations for collecting local production refers that most suitable locations are in southern parts of Northern Ostrobothnia and also near Oulu. On the basis of results, cooperation and networking between actors, particularly in logistics, may benefit competitiveness of local food and increase its access to markets

Impact of weather on bicycle use: Evidence from Helsinki in 2017-2021

    No full text
This study describes the seasonal variations of cycling in Helsinki and analyzes their association with the weather conditions. The empirical data was obtained from the open data of cyclist counting stations at three locations in Helsinki (Baana, Merikannontie, Huopalahti). Weather data (including average daily temperature, sum of precipitation and average snow depth at the Kaisaniemi weather station) was obtained from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Results show that there is a very strong seasonal variation of cycling in Helsinki. When analyzed individually, all three weather variables showed a statistically significant relationship with the daily number of cyclists. However, when all three variables were entered into the model together, temperature was by far the most influential variable while precipitation was also statistically significant. Snow depth was not significant in the model, and it is obvious that its role is dependent on various other factors, for instance snow clearing, that was not considered in the analyses of the study
