Theory of excitation transfer between two-dimensional semiconductor and molecular layers
The geometry-dependent energy transfer rate from an electrically pumped
inorganic semiconductor quantum well into an organic molecular layer is studied
theoretically. We focus on F\"orster-type nonradiative excitation transfer
between the organic and inorganic layer and include quasi-momentum conservation
and intermolecular coupling between the molecules in the organic film.
(Transition) partial charges calculated from density-functional theory are used
to calculate the coupling elements. The partial charges describe the spatial
charge distribution and go beyond the common dipole-dipole interaction. We find
that the transfer rates are highly sensitive to variations in the geometry of
the hybrid inorganic/organic system. For instance, the transfer efficiency is
improved by orders of magnitude by tuning the relative orientation and
positioning of the molecules. Also, the operating regime is identified where
in-scattering dominates over unwanted back-scattering from the molecular layer
into the substrate
Release of glutamate and CGRP from trigeminal ganglion neurons: Role of calcium channels and 5-HT1 receptor signaling
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aberrant release of the neurotransmitters, glutamate and calcitonin-gene related peptide (CGRP), from trigeminal neurons has been implicated in migraine. The voltage-gated P/Q-type calcium channel has a critical role in controlling neurotransmitter release and has been linked to Familial Hemiplegic Migraine. Therefore, we examined the importance of voltage-dependent calcium channels in controlling release of glutamate and CGRP from trigeminal ganglion neurons isolated from male and female rats and grown in culture. Serotonergic pathways are likely involved in migraine, as triptans, a class of 5-HT1 receptor agonists, are effective in the treatment of migraine and their effectiveness may be due to inhibiting neurotransmitter release from trigeminal neurons. We also studied the effect of serotonin receptor activation on release of glutamate and CGRP from trigeminal neurons grown in culture.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>P/Q-, N- and L-type channels each mediate a significant fraction of potassium-stimulated release of glutamate and CGRP. We determined that 5-HT significantly inhibits potassium-stimulated release of both glutamate and CGRP. Serotonergic inhibition of both CGRP and glutamate release can be blocked by pertussis toxin and NAS-181, a 5-HT1B/1D antagonist. Stimulated release of CGRP is unaffected by Y-25130, a 5-HT3 antagonist and SB 200646, a 5-HT2B/2C antagonist.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These data suggest that release of both glutamate and CGRP from trigeminal neurons is controlled by calcium channels and modulated by 5-HT signaling in a pertussis-toxin dependent manner and probably via 5-HT1 receptor signaling. This is the first characterization of glutamate release from trigeminal neurons grown in culture.</p
Who\u27s accessing emergency food services?
Introduction:
Last year, Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf provided 1,260,517 pounds of food to over 11,000 people each month via groceries, hot meals and home delivery, supplying an average of almost 40% of food for families.
CEFS seeks to improve their services and offerings by better understanding the demographics, food preference, and needs of the clients they serve.
Our goal was to collect demographic and utilization data to identify areas where CEFS could enhance services and improve client access to healthful food.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1208/thumbnail.jp
Neutral and Charged Inter-Valley Biexcitons in Monolayer MoSe
In atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), reduced
dielectric screening of the Coulomb interaction leads to strongly correlated
many-body states, including excitons and trions, that dominate the optical
properties. Higher-order states, such as bound biexcitons, are possible but are
difficult to identify unambiguously using linear optical spectroscopy methods
alone. Here, we implement polarization-resolved two-dimensional coherent
spectroscopy to unravel the complex optical response of monolayer MoSe and
identify multiple higher-order correlated states. Decisive signatures of
neutral and charged inter-valley biexcitons appear in cross-polarized
two-dimensional spectra as distinct resonances with respective ~20 meV and ~5
meV binding energies--similar to recent calculations using variational and
Monte Carlo methods. A theoretical model taking into account the
valley-dependent optical selection rules reveals the specific quantum pathways
that give rise to these states. Inter-valley biexcitons identified here,
comprised of neutral and charged excitons from different valleys, offer new
opportunities for creating exotic exciton-polariton condensates and for
developing ultrathin biexciton lasers and polarization-entangled photon
