Counseling Sexology in Marriage, Couple, & Family Counseling: A Special Commentary
Healthy couple and family sexuality adds satisfaction and intimacy to the most important human relationships. Systemic work around sexual issues can be complex yet very satisfying. This commentary includes basic information on clinical priorities in working with couples and families including how a counselor’s comfort level might determine outcomes in sexuality counseling. Research and training priorities and their impact are also discussed
Mothers of Sons with Substance Use Disorders: A Grounded Theory Approach Revealing Maternal Expectations and Three Stages of Change
Addiction problems in a family present challenges in coping with the addicted family member\u27s behaviors are often described in terms of the psychopathology of the interactions of the family members. The present article describes a qualitative study of the lived experiences of mothers whose male children have struggled or currently are struggling with chemical dependence. Our overall aim in the study was to explore critical stages or events in the experiences of these mothers relevant to their chemically dependent sons. As such, our research question was: What are the lived experiences of mothers of substance abusing sons who are either in recovery or are still using substances? Results of the interviews of nine mothers indicated that regardless of age, ethnicity, social status, education, or career, they experienced a process highlighted by maternal expectations and consisting of three stages: (a) the pre-addiction stage in which mother and son did not experience abnormal relational stress or conflict, (b) the addiction stage in which mother and son experienced extreme relational stress and conflict, and (c) the mother\u27s recovery stage in which the mother experienced a confusion in her relationship with her son and his addiction leading to her own recovery and wellness
The Therapeutic Interview Process in Qualitative Research Studies
The purpose of this paper is to describe the systemic strategies used in marriage and family therapy relevant to interviews, via what we call the therapeutic interview process, that expand the meaning of a research study for both the counselor researcher and the participant(s). We outline the therapeutic interview process for conducting transformative - based interviews via similar strategies from a family systems perspective conceptualized by Charlés (2007). The central core of the interview process is the therapeutic conversation itself that involves the systemic whole. This therapeutic conversation is facilitated by debriefing interviews, whereby the counselor researcher is interviewed to promote reflexivit
IMPROVED REHABILITATION AND EXERCISE MACHINE / MACHINE DE REEDUCATION ET D\u27EXERCICE AMELIOREE
An improved rehabilitation and exercise machine is provided which allows a person with physical limitations, disabilities or chronic conditions to use the machine in order to rehabilitate their muscles, improve joint flexibility, and enhance cardiovascular fitness. An embodiment of the device includes a framework, a first and second crank arm, a first and second handle bar, a first and second foot pedal, a motor and pulley assembly, a first and second coupler link, and a motor controller with speed knob
Efectividad de hongos micorrizo-arbusculares nativos en suelos con diferentes usos agropecuarios
Objective. To determine the effectiveness of mycorrhizal-arbuscular fungi (AMF) of soils with different agricultural uses , in the middle valley of the Sinú river,Colombia. Materials and methods. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions, where Leucaena leucocephala was used as the indicator plant, which was planted in masons with an Andisol soil (horizon B) used as a substrate. This substrate was inoculated separately with samples from seven soils (Ap horizon), as a source of AMF, from the Turipaná Research Center in Agrosavia. As controls we included inoculation with HMA Glomus fasciculatum and one non-inoculated one. The effect of mycorrhizal inoculation was evaluated by monitoring the foliar P content in L. leucocephala plants, as a function of time to 64 days, when the dry mass of its aerial part and mycorrhizal colonization was determined. Results. The growth of L. leucocephala and the foliar P content was significantly higher when the soil was inoculated with G. fasciculatum, in comparison to that observed with the other treatments. Likewise, mycorrhizal colonization was very high in the roots of L. leucocephala that grew in the soil inoculated with G. fasciculatum and lower in the other treatments. Conclusions. The results indicate that the native AMF of soils with different uses, from Turipaná, exhibited low potential to develop mycorrhizal symbiosis, which limited the growth and concentration of leaf P in the host plant.
Effect of Palliative Care–Led Meetings for Families of Patients With Chronic Critical Illness: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Family caregivers of patients with chronic critical illness experience significant psychological distress
Consideration of Shared Decision Making in Nursing: A Review of Clinicians’ Perceptions and Interventions
As the number of individuals with chronic illness increases so has the need for strategies to enable nurses to engage them effectively in daily management of their conditions. Shared decision making between patients and nurses is one approach frequently discussed in the literature. This paper reviews recent studies of shared decision making and the meaning of findings for the nurse-patient relationship. Patients likely to prefer to engage in shared decision making are younger and have higher levels of education. However, there is a lack of evidence for the effect of shared decision making on patient outcomes. Further, studies are needed to examine shared decision making when the patient is a child. Nurses are professionally suited to engage their patients fully in treatment plans. More evidence for how shared decision making affects outcomes and how nurses can successfully achieve such engagement is needed
