    Report on argumentation and teacher education in Europe

    This document will ultimately form part of a comprehensive package of materials for teacher education and professional development in argumentation. The initial deliverable from Kaunas University of Technology described the rhetorical basis of argumentation theory for pre‐ and in‐service teachers, whilst this state of the art report sets out the current and rather unsatisfactory status of argumentation in curricula, initial teacher training/education and teacher professional development, across the fifteen S‐TEAM partner countries. We believe that this is a representative sample and that the report can be taken as a reliable snapshot of the situation in Europe generally

    Test bench to test protocols and algorithms for multimedia delivery

    Nowadays, the study of Quality of Service (QoS) in multimedia streaming is generally carried out by simulators. However, the results of these tests are not quite real. This forces researchers to work with approximations. In this paper, we implement a test bench to test the performance and assess the protocols and algorithms for multimedia delivery. This test bench let us evaluate the network parameters performance, by manipulating the devices under controlled conditions, and allow us to identify different application cases.     MHCP: Multimedia Hybrid Cloud Computing Protocol and Architecture for Mobile Devices

    [EN] Multimedia cloud computing has appeared as a very attractive environment for the business world in terms of providing cost-effective services with a minimum of entry costs and infrastructure requirements. There are some architecture proposals in the related literature, but there is no multimedia cloud computing architecture with hybrid features specifically designed for mobile devices. In this article, we propose a new multimedia hybrid cloud computing architecture and protocol. It merges existing private and public clouds and combines IaaS, SaaS and SECaaS cloud computing models in order to find a common platform to deliver real time traffic from heterogeneous multimedia and social networks for mobile users.     Energy Savings Consumption on Public Wireless Networks by SDN Management

    [EN] In order to use the energy more efficiently, network algorithms and protocols must incorporate in their decision mechanisms some functions focused on saving energy. In this paper we have studied different features and parameters of wireless networks to establish their relationship with the power consumption. First, we have analyzed the variation of power consumption of access points (APs) in function of the antenna transmission power. Second, we have collected user information from real public wireless network to determine the real requirements of network resources in real time basis. Based on this information, a new extension for Openflow protocol over Software-Defined Networking (SDN) networks will be proposed to manage the wireless network, with the aim to keep the optimal network performance with minimal power consumption. This extension introduces new Openflow messages and a new function to be incorporated in SDN controllers and Openflow enabled devices. The proposal will be validated by appropriated simulations based on real scenarios: a shopping center and a municipal wireless network.This work has been supported by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad , through the Convocatoria 2014.     MWAHCA: A Multimedia Wireless Ad Hoc Cluster Architecture

    Wireless Ad hoc networks provide a flexible and adaptable infrastructure to transport data over a great variety of environments. Recently, real-time audio and video data transmission has been increased due to the appearance of many multimedia applications. One of the major challenges is to ensure the quality of multimedia streams when they have passed through a wireless ad hoc network. It requires adapting the network architecture to the multimedia QoS requirements. In this paper we propose a new architecture to organize and manage cluster-based ad hoc networks in order to provide multimedia streams. Proposed architecture adapts the network wireless topology in order to improve the quality of audio and video transmissions. In order to achieve this goal, the architecture uses some information such as each node's capacity and the QoS parameters (bandwidth, delay, jitter, and packet loss). The architecture splits the network into clusters which are specialized in specific multimedia traffic.     Validation of a methodology for grouping intakes of pressurized irrigation networks into sectors to minimize energy consumption

    A methodology to optimise the amount of energy consumed in pressurized irrigation systems was presented by Jimenez-Bello et al. (2010a). These authors proposed grouping pressurized irrigation network intakes, each of the water turnouts resulting from a shared hydrant, into sectors via a genetic algorithm. In the present research, the methodology was applied and validated in a water users association. Several energy efficiency indicators were calculated and compared during five consecutive seasons (2006-2010). The first two seasons, when the methodology was not employed, were used as reference for the results obtained from 2008 onwards, when the methodology was applied to the management of irrigation network. Results obtained in seasons 2008-2010 showed that the average energy savings were 16% in comparisons to the 2006 season. However, it should be noted that the potential, theoretical savings, could have been as high as 22.3% if the modelled grouping networks would have been accurately followed. There was in fact some discrepancy between the theoretical model outputs and the final groupings due to some intake restrictions. In addition, during the irrigation campaigns, the number of irrigation intakes that operated within each sector was not always equal to the modelled sectoring, a fact that reduced the overall water users association energy efficiency. This occurred particularly during rainy periods, when some users deliberately decided to close their manual irrigation intakes valves. Overall, results showed the potential of the validated methodology for optimising energy use.     Fault tolerant mechanism for multimedia flows in wireless ad hoc networks based on fast switching paths

    Multimedia traffic can be forwarded through a wireless ad hoc network using the available resources of the nodes. Several models and protocols have been designed in order to organize and arrange the nodes to improve transmissions along the network. We use a cluster-based framework, called MWAHCA architecture, which optimizes multimedia transmissions over a wireless ad hoc network. It was proposed by us in a previous research work. This architecture is focused on decreasing quality of service (QoS) parameters like latency, jitter, and packet loss, but other network features were not developed, like load balance or fault tolerance. In this paper, we propose a new fault tolerance mechanism, using as a base the MWAHCA architecture, in order to recover any multimedia flow crossing the wireless ad hoc network when there is a node failure. The algorithm can run independently for each multimedia flow. The main objective is to keep the QoS parameters as low as possible. To achieve this goal, the convergence time must be controlled and reduced.     Utilizando una base de datos espectral simulada, con el modelo de transferencia radiativa HydroLi- ght, se realizó un ajuste para Landsat-8 de los al- goritmos OC2 y OC3, comúnmente utilizados por MODIS. La validación de los coeficientes propues- tos se hizo mediante una serie temporal del 2013 de imágenes Landsat-8 y el producto de [Chl-a] de MODIS del lago Titicaca, el cual, por sus carac- terísticas limnológicas y de tamaño, es adecuado para la validación de los algoritmos OC2 y OC3 propuestos. También se hizo una comparación con los coeficientes determinados con la base de datos del NOMAD, obteniendo un ajuste bastante pobre. Por último, se hizo una comparación del algoritmo OC2, utilizando la banda a 483 nm, aplicándolo a las diferentes imágenes de Landsat (5, 7 y 8), don- de se destaca la mejora que proporciona la mayor resolución radiométrica (12 bits) de Landsat-8 a los mapas de [Chl-a] obtenidos.

    Silver Nanoparticle Arrays onto Glass Substrates Obtained by Solid-State Thermal Dewetting: A Morphological, Structural and Surface Chemical Study

    Silver nanoparticles (NPs) on glass substrates were obtained by a solid-state thermal dewetting (SSD) process using vacuum-evaporated-silver precursor layers. An exhaustive investigation of the morphological, structural, and surface chemistry properties by systematically controlling the precursor film thickness, annealing temperature, and time was conducted. Thin silver films with thicknesses of 40 and 80 nm were deposited and annealed in air by applying a combined heat-up+constant temperature–time program. Temperatures from 300 to 500 °C and times from 0 to 50 min were assayed. SSD promoted the morphological modification of the films, leading to the Ag NPs having a discrete structure. The size, shape, surface density, and inter-nanoparticle distance of the nanoparticles depended on the initial film thickness, annealing temperature, and time, exhibiting a cubic silver structure with a (111) preferred crystallographic orientation. The prepared NPs were found to be highly enriched in the Ag{111}/Ag{110}/Ag{100} equilibrium facets. SSD not only promotes NP formation but also promotes the partial oxidation from Ag to AgO at the surface level. AgO was detected on the surface around the nanoparticles synthesized at 500 °C. Overall, a broad framework has been established that connects process factors to distinguish resultant Ag NP features in order to develop unique silver nanoparticles for specific applications.Partial funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga.
