Phase-sensitive amplification of 11 WDM channels across bandwidth of 8 nm in a fibre optic parametric amplifier
We experimentally demonstrate phase-sensitive fibre optic parametric amplification with gain >10dB and optical noise figure below 3dB for 11 channels spaced of 100 GHz. We employ all-fibre dispersion management to achieve a wideband phase-matching between signals and their copies
Motivation at work of Brazilian executives
This study aimed to verify the extent to which the Brazilian executives are motivated at work. Companies seek constantly for practices that allow greater motivation of employees in day-to-day activities. Such search gets particularly important when looking at the work of executives in Brazil, in which working conditions are extremely stressful, whether by race against time, either by issues relating to the relationship among people. Traditional management theory seems to be ineffective when searching for the solution of problems related to the process of management of employees motivation
A reaction-diffusion model for the growth of avascular tumor
A nutrient-limited model for avascular cancer growth including cell
proliferation, motility and death is presented. The model qualitatively
reproduces commonly observed morphologies for primary tumors, and the simulated
patterns are characterized by its gyration radius, total number of cancer
cells, and number of cells on tumor periphery. These very distinct
morphological patterns follow Gompertz growth curves, but exhibit different
scaling laws for their surfaces. Also, the simulated tumors incorporate a
spatial structure composed of a central necrotic core, an inner rim of
quiescent cells and a narrow outer shell of proliferating cells in agreement
with biological data. Finally, our results indicate that the competition for
nutrients among normal and cancer cells may be a determinant factor in

Effect of the addition of β-mannanase on the performance, metabolizable energy, amino acid digestibility coefficients, and immune functions of broilers fed different nutritional levels
Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of β-mannanase (BM) supplementation on the performance, metabolizable energy, amino acid digestibility, and immune function of broilers. A total of 1,600 broilers were randomly distributed in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement (4 nutritional levels × 0 or 500 g/ton BM), with 10 replicates and 20 broilers per pen. The same design was used in the energy and digestibility experiments with 8 and 6 replicates, respectively, and 6 broilers per pen. The nutritional levels (NL) were formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of broilers (NL1); reductions of 100 kcal metabolizable energy (NL2); 3% of the total amino acids (NL3); and 100 kcal metabolizable energy and 3% total amino acids (NL4) from NL1. The serum immunoglobulin (Ig) concentration was determined in two broilers per pen, and these broilers were slaughtered to determine the relative weight of spleen, thymus, and bursa of Fabricius. Throughout the experiment, the lower nutritional levels reduced (P < 0.05) body weight gain (BWG) and increased (P < 0.05) feed conversion (FCR) for the NL4 treatment. The BM increased (P < 0.05) the BWG values and improved (P < 0.05) the FCR of the broilers. The apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance (AMEn) values were reduced (P < 0.05) for NL2 and NL3. The BM increased (P < 0.05) the AMEn values and reduced (P < 0.05) the excreted nitrogen. NL3 and NL4 reduced (P < 0.05) the true ileal digestibility coefficients (TIDc) of the amino acids cystine and glycine, and BM increased (P < 0.05) the TIDc for all amino acids. The addition of BM reduced (P < 0.05) the relative weights of the spleen and bursa. NL2 increased (P < 0.05) the Ig values, whereas BM reduced (P < 0.05) the serum IgA, IgG, and IgM values of the broilers. This study indicates that using suboptimal nutrient levels leads to losses in production parameters, whereas BM-supplemented diets were effective in improving performance, energy values, and TIDc levels of amino acids and immune response of broilers
Spin-orbit interaction and the 'metal-insulator' transition observed in two-dimensional hole systems
We present calculations of the spin and phase relaxation rates in GaAs/AlGaAs
-type quantum wells. These rates are used to derive the temperature
dependence of the weak-localization correction to the conductivity. In -type
quantum wells both weak localization and weak anti-localization are present due
to the strong spin-orbit interaction. When determining the total conductivity
correction one also have to include the term due to hole-hole interaction. The
magnitude of the latter depends on the ratio between the thermal energy and the
Fermi energy, and whether the system can be considered
as ballistic or diffusive (). We argue that due to the relatively low Fermi energy
and the moderate mobilities, in the -type systems in question, the
conductivity correction arising from hole-hole interactions is negligible at
the highest temperatures accessible in the experiments. Hence the
'metal-insulator' transition observed at these relatively high temperatures
could be caused by interference effects. We compare our calculations of the
weak anti-localization correction with the experimental results from different
independent groups with special emphasis on the experiments by Simmons et al.
We find good agreement between predicted and observed transistion density

Classical integrability and quantum aspects of the AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) superstring
In this paper we continue the investigation of aspects of integrability of
the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) and AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) superstrings.
By constructing a one parameter family of flat connections we prove that the
Green-Schwarz string is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in
fermions, without fixing the kappa-symmetry. We then compare the quantum
dispersion relation, fixed by integrability up to an unknown interpolating
function h(lambda), to explicit one-loop calculations on the string worldsheet.
For AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) the spectrum contains heavy, as well as light
and massless modes, and we find that the one-loop contribution differs
depending on how we treat these modes showing that similar regularization
ambiguities as appeared in AdS(4)/CFT(3) occur also here.Comment: 29 pages; v2: updated references and acknowledgmen
