    Cooper pair pumping is a coherent process. We derive a general expression for the adiabatic pumped charge in superconducting nanocircuits in the presence of level degeneracy and relate it to non-Abelian holonomies of Wilczek and Zee.     Adiabatic evolutions with a gap condition have, under a range of circumstances, exponentially small tails that describe the leaking out of the spectral subspace. Adiabatic evolutions without a gap condition do not seem to have this feature in general. This is a known fact for eigenvalue crossing.     Chemotrophic Microbial Mats and Their Potential for Preservation in the Rock Record

    Putative microbialites are commonly regarded to have formed in association with photosynthetic microorganisms, such as cyanobacteria. However, many modern microbial mat ecosystems are dominated by chemotrophic bacteria and archaea. Like phototrophs, filamentous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria form large mats at the sediment/water interface that can act to stabilize sediments, and their metabolic activities may mediate the formation of marine phosphorites. Similarly, bacteria and archaea associated with the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) catalyze the precipitation of seafloor authigenic carbonates. When preserved, lipid biomarkers, isotopic signatures, body fossils, and lithological indicators of the local depositional environment may be used to identify chemotrophic mats in the rock record. The recognition of chemotrophic communities in the rock record has the potential to transform our understanding of ancient microbial ecologies, evolution, and geochemical conditions. Chemotrophic microbes on Earth occupy naturally occurring interfaces between oxidized and reduced chemical species and thus may provide a new set of search criteria to target life-detection efforts on other planets

    Close to Uniform Prime Number Generation With Fewer Random Bits

    In this paper, we analyze several variants of a simple method for generating prime numbers with fewer random bits. To generate a prime pp less than xx, the basic idea is to fix a constant qx1εq\propto x^{1-\varepsilon}, pick a uniformly random a<qa<q coprime to qq, and choose pp of the form a+tqa+t\cdot q, where only tt is updated if the primality test fails. We prove that variants of this approach provide prime generation algorithms requiring few random bits and whose output distribution is close to uniform, under less and less expensive assumptions: first a relatively strong conjecture by H.L. Montgomery, made precise by Friedlander and Granville; then the Extended Riemann Hypothesis; and finally fully unconditionally using the Barban-Davenport-Halberstam theorem.     PROCESS-ORIENTED STRATEGY AMONG NON-MAJOR SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER: A PHENOMENOLOGY

    The study aimed to narrate and draw out the experiences and insights of the Non-major Social Studies teacher teaching Social Studies regarding how the use of process-oriented strategies. This qualitative study engages a phenomenological approach for the better contributor of meaningful understanding and processes determining experiences and insights of the teachers. The use of in-depth interviews and focus group discussions explore the affairs of the non-major Social Studies teacher. The study revealed the teacher’s experiences and the process-oriented strategies they implement. Participants claimed that they had undergone several challenges and distractions in teaching, such as challenges in content preparation, being obligated to review key concepts, and flexibility in teaching practices. The coping mechanisms as to acceptance and adaptation, innovation and teamwork, and the use of concepts in process-oriented strategies. The different insights and flexibility are vital, training and seminars are needed, and consultation and supervisors’ help are necessary. The study’s findings stipulated that process-oriented strategies helped teachers teach outside their specialization patterns the decisions and actions over the year of their teaching career. This addresses problems and shapes the students’ academic endeavors by developing and implementing strategies that both help students’ holistic nationalism and teachers’ professional development.  Article visualizations

    Correlated Markov Quantum Walks

    We consider the discrete time unitary dynamics given by a quantum walk on Zd\Z^d performed by a particle with internal degree of freedom, called coin state, according to the following iterated rule: a unitary update of the coin state takes place, followed by a shift on the lattice, conditioned on the coin state of the particle. We study the large time behavior of the quantum mechanical probability distribution of the position observable in Zd\Z^d for random updates of the coin states of the following form. The random sequences of unitary updates are given by a site dependent function of a Markov chain in time, with the following properties: on each site, they share the same stationnary Markovian distribution and, for each fixed time, they form a deterministic periodic pattern on the lattice. We prove a Feynman-Kac formula to express the characteristic function of the averaged distribution over the randomness at time nn in terms of the nth power of an operator MM. By analyzing the spectrum of MM, we show that this distribution posesses a drift proportional to the time and its centered counterpart displays a diffusive behavior with a diffusion matrix we compute. Moderate and large deviations principles are also proven to hold for the averaged distribution and the limit of the suitably rescaled corresponding characteristic function is shown to satisfy a diffusion equation. An example of random updates for which the analysis of the distribution can be performed without averaging is worked out. The random distribution displays a deterministic drift proportional to time and its centered counterpart gives rise to a random diffusion matrix whose law we compute.     The prediction of macrophyte species occurrence in Swiss ponds

    The study attempted to model the abundance of aquatic plant species recorded in a range of ponds in Switzerland. A stratified sample of 80 ponds, distributed all over the country, provided input data for model development. Of the 154 species recorded, 45 were selected for modelling. A total of 14 environmental parameters were preselected as candidate explanatory variables. Two types of statistical tools were used to explore the data and to develop the predictive models: linear regression (LR) and generalized additive models (GAMs). Six LR species models had a reasonable predictive ability (30-50% of variance explained by the selected predictors). There was a gradient in the quality of the 45 GAM models. Ten species models exhibited both a good fit and statistical robustness: Lemnaminor, Phragmitesaustralis, Lysimachiavulgaris, Galiumpalustre, Lysimachianummularia, Irispseudacorus, Lythrumsalicaria, Lycopuseuropaeus, Phalarisarundinacea, Alismaplantago-aquatica, Schoenoplectuslacustris, Carexnigra. Altitude appeared to be a key explanatory variable in most of the species models. In some cases, the degree to which the shore was shaded, connectivity between water bodies, pond area, mineral nitrogen levels, pond age, pond depth, and the extent of agriculture or pasture in the catchment were selected as additional explanatory variables.
